Walter Emanus was a professor at the Corellia University, where he was friends with Cornelius Wagglehorn.
In 1 ABY he led an archaeological expedition, including the physician Tyla Grant, to Yavin 4 that excavated the Temple of Exar Kun. However, when the team uncovered the catacombs beneath the temple, they awakened the spirit of Exar Kun and became enslaved to it, becoming the Cult of Exar Kun. He left a diary of his experiences, that was later found by a group of spacers.

Professor Walter Emanus was mentioned in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts, prior to its closure on December 15, 2011. Walter Emanus was mentioned throughout the quests related to the "Exar Kun" Heroic Encounter, introduced with the release of the "Chapter 9" update, on April 3, 2008.
An unused model of Walter Emanus indicated that the Exar Kun cultist known as the Exar Kun Wordbearer was intended to be Professor Walter Emanus.
