The Whetstone was a Kilji war cruiser and battlecruiser that served in the government ruled by its commander, the Kilji Illumine of Generalirius Nakirre. The sister ship to the war cruiser Anvil and the smaller Kilji picket cruiser Hammer, Nakirre's warship served as his flagship used around 18 BBY while traveling with the Grysk operative "Jixtus."
Nakirre's Whetstone traveled across a region of the Unknown Regions which contained the planet Zyzek, the Chiss Ascendancy government, of which, the battle cruiser visited seven planets: Avidich, Rhigar, Ornfra and three others. On Rhigar, the Clarr family Captain Roscu boarded the Whetstone, and met the generalirius and Jixtus aboard one of the Whetstones meeting rooms, which Roscu thought was decorated as a child's playhouse.
Offering proof of treachery among the Chiss ruling families, Nakirre and Jixtus quickly incited a civil war while their relationships became more tense. Nakirre mocked his companion, and the Grysk did likewise, resulting in Nakirre becoming a mere tool of the Grysk that only accepted orders from Jixtus. After the Whetstone picked up Jixtus's agent, the navigator Qilori, at the planet Schesa, the navigator brought it to the Sunrise system. There, Jixtus killed Nakirre on the war cruiser's bridge, and Jixtus's fleet of Grysk warships fought a fleet of Chiss warships led by Senior Captain Thrawn.
As Jixtus's forced exploded, his flagship of the FateSpinner attempted its escape, however, Qilori brought the Kilji vassals aboard the Whetstone back from their mourning of Nakirre and ordered them to fire all of the Kilji's spectrum lasers, missiles, and weapons at the giant Grysk flagship. The disintegration of one of the Grysk starship's flank led Jixtus to use a self-destruct mechanism to destroy his forces, which allowed Thrawn to disarm the Whetstone before it departed toward the Kilji home.
The Kilji war cruiser flagship Whetstone was a large battlecruiser size warship commanded by the Kilji Illumine government's leader, Generalirius Nakirre. Crewed by Nakirre's Kilji vassals, the Whetstones bridge was filled by several stations, comm stations, weapon stations, Nakirre's command chair and board from which he could give orders to all those on the bridge, the navigator's station, and the Grysk operative "Jixtus"'s chair and table near Nakirre. Cabins for the crew were available, one of them owned by Jixtus's agent Qilori of Uandualon, in which he rested before the Kiljis piloted the Whetstone until they reached the Unknown Regions Ornfra system near the Sunrise system with their hyperdrive.
A meeting room with walls patterned with the pinprick of colored chase-pattern lights, illuminated by hovering light globe located in each of the compartment's upper corners. A thick and brush-topped carpet was on the floor, below a wooden round table and six chairs of contrast-carved wood. In the center of the table sat a multiscreen that could display recordings. Cold metal and ceramic formed the Whetstones corridors, which linked the ship's various compartments. The exterior of the ship was covered by nyix-alloy hull plating and electrostatic barrier nodes provided electrostatic barriers which protected the Whetstone from attacks. Light globes, whose light could be seen from meters away, illuminated the Whetstones corridors.
Around 18 BBY, Nakirre received the Kilji Overlords' approval on traveling with Jixtus, which allowed him to travel wherever he wanted with the alien. The pair traveled aboard the generalirius's war cruiser to the Unknown Regions planet Zyzek, where they planned to meet representatives of four nations the Grysk felt were the most promising for conquest, and sample their goods which they had brought to Zyzek wishing to sell. Before the Grysk could continue, a message played through the Whetstones bridge speakers: the Chiss Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo "Thrawn" had Watith prisoners and he was looking to return them to their home. As he believed obtaining information on how Thrawn had obtained those prisoners—which Jixtus denied the Chiss—Nakirre moved the Whetstone to face the Chiss ship, a maneuver specifically designed to show defiance and confidence to the Chiss heavy cruiser Springhawk.
Engaging in a conversation through comm, Nakirre decided the Chiss was not necessary for his plans, and decided to kill Thrawn as he mocked the Kilji way of order and enlightenment, the Illumine's beliefs. Using his board to order the war cruiser's ramp-up to combat status, Nakirre prepared to destroy the Springhawk in a few minutes. However, the organization that protected the Zyzek system, Zyzek System Defense, ordered both warships to stand down, allowing Nakirre to shut down his confrontation with the Springhawk. Before the heavy cruiser left, Nakirre promised Thrawn to deliver Kilji enlightenment to the Chiss soon.
After the Zyzek confrontation, Nakirre and Jixtus traveled to the Chiss Ascendancy government's planet Avidich, where they met Mitth family Patriel Thistrian. The Grysk coordinator offered his warships to defend the Mitth from the Xodlak, Erighal and Dasklo families, however, after the Mitth patriel spoke with his Patriarch Thurfian, he was forced to reject the offer and order the Whetstone away before his frigate and several missile boats destroyed it.
As Jixtus had followed the Chiss directive, Nakirre and Jixtus argued about the Grysk not enlightening the Chiss leaders and commanders before the Kilji war cruiser Whetstone traveled to a star system Jixtus specified. After ten minutes, they were there, and the Shatter-class WarMaster FateSpinner appeared, allowing Jixtus to make Nakirre fear him and the Grysks—in some capacity, as the enlightened generalirius was not allowed to fear, and only allowed to be calm and show wisdom—and order him to follow every single directive the Grysks gave, who would still assist him in enlightening the Chiss and other species.
