Xa Fel was an astronomical object in the Core Worlds and the Interior that housed major Galactic Empire shipyards during the Galactic Civil War. Rebel Alliance General Crix Madine marked the shipyards as a possible future target after observing the early success of the campaign Operation Ringbreaker by the Alliance's 61st Mobile Infantry in 3 ABY. In 5 ABY, the Xa Fel shipyards were contested by the Alliance's successor, the New Republic.

During the Galactic Civil War between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance, Xa Fel was the site of one of the Empire's major shipyards. In 3 ABY, the Alliance's 61st Mobile Infantry led the campaign Operation Ringbreaker, attacking a number of minor Imperial resource hubs to weaken the defenses of the major shipbuilding hub Kuat Drive Yards for a final attack. Alliance Intelligence examined the campaign from afar, and General Crix Madine, observing Operation Ringbreaker's early success, began drawing up a galactic map of other major Imperial shipyards, drydocks, and mining centers that could be targeted by the Alliance. Xa Fel's shipyards were noted on the map under the label "Xa fel" and were marked as a low-security, medium-priority option.
The map of the Imperial industrial hubs was included in an official document sent to Alliance Commander-in-Chief Mon Mothma and was later added to a compilation of non-electronic documents called the The Rebel Files by archivist Hendri Underholt. Operation Ringbreaker, however, did not ultimately make it to the Kuat Drive Yards. In 4 ABY, the Alliance transitioned into the New Republic, which continued its war against a weakening Empire. The New Republic fought to gain control of the Xa Fel shipyards by 5 ABY. During a meeting with his new Imperial Shadow Council, Fleet Admiral Gallius Rax spoke on the status of a number of Imperial shipyards including Xa Fel's, reporting that they were either contested or lost, and affirmed that the Imperial assets in the Outer Rim Territories would be a vital alternative. In 34 ABY, some screens aboard Chandrila Star Line's Star Cruiser Halcyon showed a partial map of the galaxy that noted Xa Fel's position.
Xa Fel was introduced into the current Star Wars canon by a mention in the 2016 novel Aftermath: Life Debt, the second installment of Chuck Wendig's Star Wars: The Aftermath Trilogy. Its first appearance came in the form of being depicted on a map viewable in Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, an immersive roleplaying experience at Florida's Walt Disney World Resort that was first opened to the public on March 1, 2022. Xa Fel originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it first appeared in the 1993 novel The Last Command, the third in Timothy Zahn's Star Wars: The Thrawn Trilogy. It was first pictured in the 1998 LucasArts video game Star Wars: Rebellion, where the images used to depict it were also reused for other locations.
