Fleet Admiral was a high-ranked position in several navies in the galaxy, including the Republic Navy, Imperial Navy and New Republic Defense Fleet. In the Imperial Navy, a fleet admiral was superior to an admiral and inferior to a Grand Admiral. However, in the New Republic, the rank was the highest naval position which was in command of the entire starfleet.
The military rank of Fleet Admiral was a naval military rank conferred on officers within multiple factions throughout different times. The rank existed in the Galactic Republic Navy. The Imperial Navy of the Galactic Empire also utilized the rank, with holders serving above standard admirals but below grand admirals within the hierarchy. In the Imperial Navy, fleet admirals had the capacity to serve as the commanding officers of multiple task forces, a squadron, or a mobile numbered fleet. The New Republic Defense Fleet used the rank of fleet admiral for the leader of the navy. The Chiss Ascendancy was another government that used the fleet admiral rank within its armed forces, falling above a Chiss admiral, but below the Supreme Admiral.
During the Clone Wars, Wullf Yularen served as Fleet Admiral in the Galactic Republic's Navy. Prior to 2 BBY, commander of the 7th Fleet, Sartan, held the rank, as did Jok Donassius. During the Galactic Civil War Kendal Ozzel of Death Squadron used the rank. Firmus Piett served as a fleet admiral prior to the Battle of Endor. At some point after, the rank of fleet admiral was given to Gallius Rax, a friend of and close advisor to Emperor Sheev Palpatine. After the death of Palpatine during the Battle of Endor, Rax promoted Admiral Rae Sloane to the position for her actions during the Rebellion on Akiva, but later promoted her again to the superior rank of Grand Admiral. Following the Battle of Endor, Admiral Gial Ackbar of the New Republic Defense Fleet was promoted to the rank of Fleet Admiral.
