Wullf Yularen

Wullf Yularen was a male human military officer and Anaxes bureaucrat. His service extended from the Galactic Republic's final years to the Galactic Empire's era, the successor state. When the Clone Wars began—a conflict between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, its breakaway faction—Yularen joined the Galactic Republic Navy and attained the rank of fleet admiral. A stickler for the rules, Yularen was tasked with partnering with Jedi General Anakin Skywalker. Despite the contrast between Skywalker's impetuousness and Yularen's precision, they overcame initial difficulties and successfully fought the Confederacy in multiple engagements, such as Christophsis, the Kaliida Nebula, and Geonosis.

Although Yularen grew used to serving with Skywalker, he then had to collaborate with his Padawan learner, Ahsoka Tano. During the Battle of Ryloth, Tano's disobedience resulted in Wullf being wounded when his flagship, the Resolute, was attacked by droid fighters. Despite his injuries, Yularen offered the Padawan a crucial vote of confidence, which enabled them to break the Confederate blockade. Wullf narrowly escaped the destruction of the Resolute and was regarded as one of the foremost naval officers of the time, continuing to serve alongside Skywalker for the remainder of the conflict.

After the Galactic Empire's rise at the war's end, Yularen relinquished his position as an Admiral to become a colonel in the Imperial Security Bureau. In this capacity, Wullf's duty was to uncover sedition within the Imperial Senate and act as a liaison to the Naval Intelligence Agency. Following the Berch Teller campaign, Yularen was promoted to lead the reorganized NIA as deputy director. However, he maintained a significant role in the ISB and became an early supporter of the Chiss Thrawn as he advanced through the ranks of the Imperial Navy, aiding him in his operations against the rebel operative Nevil Cygni.

As various rebel networks expanded and joined forces, Yularen oversaw the consequences of the successful heist on the Aldhani Garrison. During this period, ISB Agent Alexsandr Kallus, Wullf's "star pupil," was in the process of pursuing a rebel group known as the Spectres. Some years later, Yularen assisted Thrawn, who had since become a grand admiral, in the search for the rebel informant "Fulcrum," who was leaking Imperial intelligence to the rebels. Working alongside the Chiss, they discovered that the rebel mole was actually Kallus, who subsequently defected to the Alliance to Restore the Republic. After the Battle of Scarif, which resulted in the theft of the Death Star plans, Yularen was among the officers assigned to the battle station, where he was killed during the Battle of Yavin.

Biography

Early career

Wullf Yularen was a human male born on the planet of Coruscant, and he spent his formative years on Anaxes. Before the start of the Clone Wars, Yularen held a position as an officer within the Republic Navy when it was a branch of the Judicial Department. He took part in the Battle of Malastare Narrows, a conflict where a fleet organized by the Corporate Alliance blockaded the planet Malastare, acting as one of the Republic officers commanding the Republic forces. Despite his dedicated efforts, the enemy fleet, under the command of the brilliant Harch tactician Admiral Trench, proved impenetrable, and Yularen suffered significant losses among his subordinates. Eventually, a Jedi task force turned the tide, defeating the Corporate fleet, vaporizing Trench's flagship, and seemingly killing him in the process. Despite the victory, Yularen departed the battle with a persistent fear of the Admiral's tactical skills, with Trench haunting his nightmares. Consequently, Yularen left the Republic Navy and served in the Senate Bureau of Intelligence for a period, before retiring. During his tenure in the Bureau of Intelligence, Yularen encountered Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine and collaborated with him in the Galactic Senate.

The Clone Wars

Assignment to Anakin Skywalker

Yularen served under General Anakin Skywalker

Following the outbreak of the Clone Wars in 22 BBY and the establishment of the Grand Army of the Republic, Chancellor Palpatine encouraged Yularen to enlist in the newly formed Republic Navy, persuading Yularen to accept a commission as an admiral, making him the youngest member of the naval corps to achieve this rank. Yularen held the rank of fleet admiral throughout the war. As a result of a war agreement between the Jedi Order and the Chancellor, which stipulated that the new Jedi Generals would be paired with experienced naval officers, Admiral Yularen was assigned to Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker. The Resolute, a Venator-class Star Destroyer, served as the flagship for Skywalker and Yularen. Yularen functioned as both the ship's captain and the commander of any fleet group that the Resolute was a part of.

Conflict on Kudo

Wullf Yularen speaks with Anakin Skywalker during the early days of the Clone Wars

In the wake of an unexpected conflict in the Corvair sector, Skywalker consulted with Yularen aboard the Resolute. The admiral conveyed intelligence from Republic sources, which had identified a droid factory belonging to the Confederacy of Independent Systems on the third moon of the planet Kudo. Given the limited time available due to approaching Separatist reinforcements, Skywalker proposed an immediate attack until he reviewed Yularen's projections, which anticipated a high number of casualties. Yularen attributed these numbers to the local Kudon operating the factory and countered Skywalker's argument that the planet's population was neutral.

The admiral suggested targeting the foundry's generator, prompting Skywalker to again consider the potential casualties. The general proposed an alternative attack plan that would allow time for the Kudon to evacuate—time, Yularen argued, for the Separatists to strengthen their defenses, posing a risk to the Republic's clone troopers. Admiral Yularen concluded the briefing by reminding Skywalker that their own soldiers were the priority.

Yularen later spoke with Skywalker's Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, to determine if he shared Skywalker's concerns. When Skywalker decided to investigate the Kudon crisis independently, the admiral once again criticized his general for prioritizing his emotions over sound tactical advice. Skywalker ultimately discovered the Kudon's innocence and reported this finding to Kenobi and Yularen on the Resolute's bridge. Kenobi speculated that the Separatists might have framed the Republic for any Kudon deaths resulting from an indiscriminate attack, a strategy Yularen deemed an effective recruitment tactic. Both Kenobi and Yularen commended Skywalker for his heroic actions.

Christophsis and Teth

Yularen facing the blockade over Christophsis

During the Battle of Christophsis, Yularen initially failed to penetrate the Separatist blockade of the planet to deliver supplies to Senator Bail Organa's forces trapped on the planet. Upon recognizing his insignia on the Separatist flagship, the dreadnought Invincible, Yularen concluded that Trench had survived the battle at Malastare and was once again his opponent. Fearing his capabilities, Yularen regrouped on the far side of Leesis, Christophsis' moon. Reinforced by Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi's Negotiator, Yularen personally participated in a mercy mission aboard a new model of stealth ship to provide relief to the planet below.

The ship, equipped with an experimental cloaking device, easily bypassed the blockade. However, Trench, emboldened by the lull in combat, ordered a flight of Hyena bombers to attack Organa's position on the planet's surface in an attempt to draw out and destroy the Republic forces. Despite Kenobi's preparations, Yularen recognized that any counterattack would result in heavy casualties for their fleet. The Jedi, Skywalker, managed to outmaneuver Trench's attacks and destroy the Invincible. Despite his initial skepticism and friction with the Jedi, the Admiral was impressed with Skywalker's unconventionality, who commented that they made a good team. Yularen was later forced to withdraw due to a renewed Separatist blockade in orbit, but the destruction of the Separatist shield generator and the subsequent surrender of General Whorm Loathsom allowed him to return with Master Yoda's reinforcements and secure a Republic victory.

Yularen then assisted General Kenobi in rescuing the remaining Clone Captain Rex's troops holed up at Teth's B'omarr Monastery. He attempted to allow Skywalker, his Padawan Ahsoka Tano and Jabba the Hutt's son, Rotta to land on his ship but were unable to due to Vulture droids attacking the ship's hangar. Following Rotta's return to his father and the establishment of the Republic's treaty with the Hutt Clan, Yularen would assign various missions to Skywalker and Kenobi throughout the war. After the Republic's defeat at Hypori, Yularen sent Kenobi, Commander CC-2224 "Cody" and the 212th Attack Battalion to aid Commander Mekedrix and his forces from Roon at a battle on Abrion Major.

Hunt for Grievous

Yularen during the search for the Malevolence

Yularen was instrumental in the search for and eventual destruction of General Grievous's secret weapon, the warship Malevolence. After it was discovered that Grievous was planning to attack the undefended Kaliida Shoals Medical Center, Yularen briefed the pilots of Shadow Squadron, who flew BTL-B Y-wing starfighter/bombers, for their strike on the ship. Following the destruction of the Malevolence's massive ion cannons and the disabling of its hyperdrive, Yularen pursued the ship with three Venator destroyers, including the Resolute, in an attempt to prevent it from escaping to Separatist space, until the ship was ultimately destroyed upon impact with a nearby moon.

Admiral Yularen continued to support Kenobi and Skywalker in their search for Grievous. Yularen then informed them that the Rishi Station had ceased transmitting and alerted the fleet to this issue, which turned out to be an attack orchestrated by Grievous. After learning that Grievous was planning to attack Kamino, the homeworld and production center for the Republic's clone army, Yularen was placed in command of the planet's blockade fleet. The robust orbital defense successfully damaged much of Grievous' fleet, only to discover that the space battle was a Separatist deception intended to facilitate a ground assault. Despite this, the planet was successfully defended from the attack.

Role at Quell

Yularen also participated in numerous other engagements throughout the war. He was involved in the Battle of Quell, arriving to reinforce the struggling fleet of General Aayla Secura, but to no avail. After the Jedi's cruiser inadvertently jumped into hyperspace, with Secura, Skywalker, Tano, and several clones onboard, Yularen was left to continue the fight until the battle was lost.

Battle of Ryloth

As the Republic moved to liberate Ryloth from the Confederacy, Yularen led the Republic fleet in engaging the blockade, commanded by Neimoidian Captain Mar Tuuk onboard a modified Droid Control Ship. The initial engagement resulted in the losses of Blue Squadron and the Redeemer, while the Resolute and the Defender sustained severe damage. Yularen was also injured during the fighting and went to rest in his quarters. Tano entered his quarters and, believing him to be unconscious, verbalized her insecurities about continuing with the battle. In turn, Yularen vouched for Tano when she proposed a new strategy; turning the Resolute on its belly while the clones flew in from the sides. He also authorized Skywalker's plan to ram the crippled Defender into Tuuk's flagship while the Jedi pretended to surrender aboard an escape pod. Skywalker and Tano's strategies succeeded in crippling Tuuk's fleet and allowed Kenobi's troops to land on the planet.

Later battles

The Admiral also coordinated the aerial support for the three-pronged ground assault in the Second Battle of Geonosis, and was given command of a task force of Star Destroyers, Republic frigates and Arquitens-class cruisers during the Battle of Saleucami, while the Jedi attempted to rescue General Eeth Koth, as well as capture Grievous. He commanded the Republic fleet during the Battle of Sullust, where the Resolute was lost to heavy enemy fire. Yularen, however, was able to evacuate before its destruction. Following the Devaron massacre, Yularen informed Skywalker and Kenobi that Mekedrix had gone rogue and possibly joined a group of assassins known as the Death Wind, striking at multiple Republic, Separatist and civilian targets. Yularen tasked the Jedi with locating the Death Wind on Ando and killing Mekedrix if he had indeed joined them, which they begrudgingly did.

Carida and the Jedi Temple bombing

Yularen had visibly aged by the later half of the Clone Wars

In 19 BBY, Yularen, being one of the higher-ranking Republic naval officers, attended the Republic strategy conference at the starbase Valor over Carida, where he nearly died due to a Separatist plot to ram the station with a captured Star Destroyer loaded with explosives. He returned to Coruscant to attend the memorial service for the victims of the Jedi Temple hangar bombing.

Outer Rim Sieges

Yularen participated in the Battle of Ringo Vinda, where he once again fought against his nemesis, Admiral Trench. Republic units forced Trench back to the Ringo Vinda space station surrounding the planet, and later directed Skywalker and his team towards the wreckage of the destroyed Nu-class transport that had been transporting CT-5385 "Tup" to Coruscant following an accidental activation of Order 66. When Admiral Trench was killed by Skywalker during the Battle of Anaxes, it provided only limited satisfaction to Yularen.

Sometime later, while on a Venator-class Star Destroyer, Yularen noticed an unidentified ship, the Silver Angel, in restricted military airspace. Yularen spoke to the passengers onboard via comlink and inquired of Trace Martez as to her presence in military airspace. He threatened to revoke her starpilot license, but Ahsoka Tano deactivated the comlink and the ship flew away. Yularen then informed General Skywalker that it was a rookie pilot on their first maneuvers. He mentioned that he was about to dispatch a detachment to apprehend them until Skywalker sensed Ahsoka's presence and decided to let them go.

Ahsoka Tano and Bo-Katan Kryze contact the Republic Military for assistance.

Towards the end of the Clone Wars, Yularen developed an interest in Count Dooku and his new second-in-command, "Admiral Enigma," who was actually the former Jedi Master Quinlan Vos. After receiving intelligence that Dooku and Admiral Enigma had been sighted on a Providence-class dreadnought that was planning to attack Taris, Yularen informed the Jedi High Council, which was engaged in a meeting to discuss rescuing Vos. Using Admiral Yularen's information, the Council decided to rescue Vos and agreed to pardon the former Sith apprentice Asajj Ventress if she agreed to take part in the rescue mission. While the rescue mission was successful, Vos had secretly turned to the dark side and become Dooku's newest Sith apprentice.

Under the Galactic Empire

Admiral of the Empire

Following the conclusion of the war, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine transitioned the Republic into the Galactic Empire, declaring himself Galactic Emperor. Yularen briefly continued his service as an Admiral within the Imperial Military. Although the Corporate Sector had largely supported the Confederacy during the Clone Wars, the Corporate Sector Authority was permitted by the Emperor to expand to tens of thousands of star systems, rather than being brought under Imperial control. Consequently, the Empire maintained a cooperative relationship with the CSA, and soon after the Clone Wars ended, Admiral Yularen led a campaign in the Corporate Sector against pirates who were launching raids.

Imperial Security Bureau

Yularen became a Colonel in the Imperial Security Bureau following the Proclamation of the New Order.

Following the rise of the New Order, Yularen chose to retire from his position as admiral. Instead, he opted for a career change, joining the Imperial Security Bureau of the Commission for the Preservation of the New Order with the rank of colonel. His initial task involved leading a division focused on uncovering instances of sedition within the Imperial Senate. By 14 BBY, which marked the fifth year of the Empire's reign, Yularen's responsibilities expanded. He was appointed as the primary liaison between the ISB and its rival agency, the Naval Intelligence Agency, tasked with fostering cooperation between the Empire's various intelligence services.

During this period, he personally assessed reports from Commander Gallius Rax, a Naval Intelligence operative, bypassing the typical chain of command involving NIA Vice Admirals Dodd Rancit and Terrinald Screed. Alongside his immediate supervisor, Harus Ison, Yularen represented the ISB on Coruscant when Moff Wilhuff Tarkin arrived to deliver his report concerning the attack on Sentinel Base. As the Berch Teller campaign unfolded, he remained actively involved in the Imperial response from Coruscant, engaging in discussions with both Tarkin and the Joint Chiefs of the Imperial Military. After Vice Admiral Rancit's death on Carida, the Emperor elevated Yularen to the position of Deputy Director, replacing his former rival as the head of the NIA when it was integrated into Imperial Intelligence. In this capacity, he continued to receive Gallius Rax's highly classified intelligence reports, designated for his "eyes only."

The rising Rebellion

Response to Aldhani

By 5 BBY, Yularen had ascended to the role of ISB Director, while maintaining his rank of colonel. It was during this time that the Galactic Empire began to observe increasing signs of resistance against its rule. One notable instance occurred that year when a rebel infiltration team stole the quarterly payroll for an Imperial sector from the Imperial headquarters located on the planet Aldhani. As the repercussions of the heist reverberated throughout Coruscant, Yularen engaged in a conversation with Emperor Palpatine. The Emperor granted the ISB direct operational control moving forward and informed Yularen of an upcoming emergency session of the Senate. The following day, Yularen addressed the ISB board, operating under the Investigations department, to convey that, while the perpetrators of the Aldhani heist might believe they had caught the Empire off guard, the Empire would respond with a forcefulness that would prove to be the real surprise. He announced that the Empire would impose a tribute tax on any sector harboring partisan activity, amounting to five times the amount stolen from Aldhani. Furthermore, any local custom, festival, or tradition used as a cover for rebel activity would result in the permanent loss of Imperial tolerance.

Yularen informs the ISB about Emperor's Palpatine proactive measures following the heist on Aldhani.

After sharing the details of his meeting with Emperor Palpatine, Yularen assured the board that they would no longer encounter any difficulties in accessing resources from the Army or Navy. He further revealed that the Emperor intended to propose a legislative package of bills and amendments during the forthcoming emergency session, which would grant the ISB unrestricted powers of surveillance, search, and seizure. Additionally, the Senate would invoke the Public Order Resentencing Directive, stipulating that any criminal act indirectly affecting the Empire would be classified as a Class One offense. Yularen continued, stating that all prison sentences were to be re-evaluated and all outstanding fines were to be paid in full. Meanwhile, Supervisor Dedra Meero listened with concern. Following the conclusion of the meeting, Meero privately spoke with her attendant, Heert, in her office, expressing her apprehension that the Empire's new policies were inadvertently aiding the rebels: the Empire was mistakenly treating the Aldhani heist as a mere robbery when it was, in reality, a declaration of rebellion.

During a meeting with Colonel Yularen, Dedra Meero began her hunt for fugitive Cassian Andor.

In the days following the Aldhani heist, Major Lio Partagaz reassigned the Morlani system to Meero, taking it from its previous Supervisor, Blevin. Partagaz justified his decision by citing an incident on Ferrix, where the Security Inspection team from Preox-Morlana failed to apprehend Cassian Andor after he killed two Corpos. This event had captured Dedra's attention, while Blevin saw it as a distraction. On the day she was scheduled to present a report to the ISB board with Yularen in attendance, Meero interviewed Syril Karn, a former Deputy Inspector from Pre-Mor, regarding his involvement in the Ferrix incident. Subsequently, Meero presented to Yularen and the rest of the ISB board a N-S9 Starpath Unit that had been stolen from the Imperial Naval Yard on Steergard the year prior. She reported that Steergard, along with other worlds, had concealed the theft of stolen Imperial equipment. Intrigued, Yularen signaled Dedra to continue.

Dedra elaborated that the Starpath Unit had been discovered on Ferrix following the incident, that Andor was the likely thief, and that he was in the process of transferring the unit to someone she identified as "Axis," whom she believed to be a key figure in an organized rebel effort focused on stealing Imperial equipment. As Yularen read aloud the list of supplies Meero requested, he remarked that it was "quite a wishlist," but Meero assured him that they were all prepared and that, if any Ferrixian possessed information about "Axis," they needed to be heard. Yularen pointed out that it represented a significant investment. However, Meero countered that such an investment was a mere fraction of the cost of lost technology. Surprised, Yularen inquired about her plan, to which she responded that the ISB needed to identify "Axis" and that Ferrix was their most promising lead. Partagaz added that Meero had convinced him that, despite lacking knowledge of his identity or area of influence, "Axis" had already caused considerable disruption. Dedra declared that Ferrix was "Axis"' initial mistake and that her objective was to delve deep, locate Andor, and initiate a hunt. The hunt for Andor went wrong: a riot erupted on Ferrix, and Andor managed to evade Imperial capture, resulting in substantial casualties on both sides.

The Spectres

Alexander Kallus was a star pupil of the Colonel, and would pursue a key group of insurgents during the early Rebellion era

During that same year, another rebel faction that presented a substantial challenge to the Empire was known as the Spectres. During an operation on Kessel, Alexsandr Kallus, an Imperial Security Bureau Agent and Yularen's "star pupil" from the Imperial Academy, found himself in conflict with this group. Kallus would engage in combat with these rebels for an extended period, and Yularen would regularly inquire about Kallus' progress and career.

Nightswan's campaign

Yularen attending the Ascension Week ball at the Alisandre Hotel

Following the Dromedar hijacking, Colonel Yularen, along with the Lothal Senator Domus Renking, Thrawn a Chiss Senior Lieutenant, and Ensign Eli Vanto, attended an Ascension Week ball at the Alisandre Hotel on Coruscant. Renking introduced Yularen and his colleagues to Arihnda Pryce, one of his aides who worked at a citizen assistance office under Renking's leadership. Yularen shared the story of how Thrawn and Vanto single-handedly captured a pirate vessel and most of its crew, thereby rescuing a valuable shipment of tibanna gas. While Thrawn remained modest about his accomplishments, Yularen emphasized that Thrawn and his crew were significantly outnumbered by the pirates. When Yularen asked Vanto if he was accurately portraying the situation, Vanto confirmed but expressed disappointment at his lack of advancement.

While conversing with Renking and Pryce, Yularen announced his departure to attend to matters with "friends in high places." Before leaving, Yularen made a point of introducing Thrawn to other Imperial officials and senators. Another underlying purpose of Yularen's social visit was to assist Thrawn in establishing connections with sympathetic civilian officials, thereby counterbalancing the influence of the High Command should they decide to court martial Thrawn for his innovative yet unconventional tactics aboard the Dromedar. Thrawn and Yularen then discussed the fact that twelve of the tibanna cylinders recovered on the Dromear had been emptied. Yularen deduced that Nevil Cygni, the insurgent leader known as Nightswan, had somehow managed to extract the gas from the cylinders. Although Thrawn was upset, Yularen reassured the Chiss that he would be welcomed into the Imperial Security Bureau should the Navy reject him. Fortunately for Thrawn, he was exonerated by the court martial panel and subsequently promoted to Captain.

Colonel Yularen with Captain Thrawn and Ensign Vanto investigated the Yinchom Dojo.

Continuing their investigation into Nightswan's campaign, Captain Thrawn and Ensign Vanto visited Colonel Yularen's office to seek his assistance in investigating the elusive Nightswan. Yularen shared Thrawn's frustration that Commander Alfren Cheno had taken responsibility to protect Thrawn following the Battle over Umbara. Yularen informed Thrawn that he had discovered multiple references to Nightswan in various activities, including metal smuggling, antique purchases, and the incitement of protests and unrest. However, he had been unable to uncover the insurgent leader's identity. Unable to determine Nightswan's motives, Yularen dismissed him as a mere troublemaker.

Thrawn speculated that Nightswan was driven by the seizure of some personal or mining interests. Following the Circle Bay mayor's office protest, Yularen persuaded Thrawn and Vanto to accompany him and the ISB Officers Roenton and Brook on a visit to the dojos that trained bodyguards for Imperial Senators. One of these dojos visited by Colonel Yularen and his companions was the Yinchom Dojo, owned by the Togorian H'sishi. Over the previous five years, thirty senators had sent their bodyguards to Yinchom Dojo for training. At the dojo, they encountered Pryce again, whom they had previously met at the Alisandre Hotel. After losing her position with Senator Renking, Pryce had found employment at the Higher Skies Advocacy Group. One of the martial art instructors Juahir Madras at the dojo was a friend of Driller MarDapp, the leader of Higher Skies. Madras was also a member of Driller's spy ring, which operated for Nightswan.

Upon H'sishi's arrival, Yularen introduced himself and his companions. He also inquired whether she maintained records of government contracts and bodyguard training. Before H'sishi went to retrieve the documents, Thrawn persuaded H'sishi to engage in a sparring session with sticks. Following the visit, Thrawn shared his observations of the dojo with Yularen. He noted that Instructor Madras had ignored them until H'sishi had instructed her to stop. Thrawn also explained that Pryce had alerted him to the advocacy group Higher Skies and that he had sparred with H'sishi to determine if she harbored any hostile intentions. While Thrawn cleared H'sishi of any malicious intent, he convinced Yularen to investigate Higher Skies.

Colonel Yularen investigated Higher Skies at Thrawn's urging.

After the Yinchom visit, Thrawn secretly met with Pryce, who offered to provide the Imperials with information about Higher Skies' espionage activities in exchange for immunity. Thrawn agreed to petition Yularen to protect Pryce in exchange for her spying on her colleagues. Acting under Thrawn and Yularen's instructions, Pryce baited Moff Ghadi by offering to provide him with information that Higher Skies had illegally obtained about Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin. Pryce then double-crossed Ghadi by exposing Higher Skies' activities and Ghadi's attempted profiteering to Tarkin himself. In addition to granting Pryce immunity, Tarkin agreed to promote her to Governor of Lothal and to promote Thrawn's friend Vanto to Lieutenant Commander.

Following Pryce's deal with Tarkin, Colonel Yularen and several ISB agents arrested members of Higher Skies and Yinchom Dojo, including Juahir and the group's leader Driller MarDapp. Yularen personally arrested Juahir after Kaniki, one of the martial arts instructor's students and a bodyguard, attempted to assassinate Senator Evidorn after being indoctrinated about the Empire's "evils" by Madras. When Juahir pleaded for Pryce's assistance, Pryce instructed her former friend to fully cooperate with Yularen in exchange for being spared the death penalty. However, Pryce convinced Yularen to spare H'sishi, as there was no evidence of any wrongdoing on her part.

Colonel Yularen attending the meeting called by Fleet Admiral Donassius

In 2 BBY, Colonel Yularen, along with Admiral Thrawn and Commander Vanto, attended a high-level meeting of Imperial Admirals and Governors, presided over by Fleet Admiral Jok Donassius, to discuss the Batonn insurgency. Nightswan's insurgents had taken the Imperial garrison on Scrim Island hostage. Thrawn was assigned to handle the insurgents but requested more time to study the battle. Yularen sided with Thrawn, noting that the insurgents had disabled the base's cathtron tubes. An impatient Fleet Admiral Donassius then reassigned Scrim Island to Admiral Durril.

Following Admiral Durril's failure, Thrawn's 96th Task Force successfully defeated the Scrim Island insurgents and forced their surrender. However, several of the insurgents managed to escape to the Creekpath Mining and Refining complex, where they barricaded themselves. The siege of Creekpath was complicated by the presence of Governor Pryce's parents, Talmoor and Elainye Pryce, who were employed at the mine. Pryce managed to convince Colonel Yularen to allow her to accompany Agent Gudry on an undercover mission to disable the insurgents' deflector shield generator. Colonel Yularen briefed Thrawn on the plan, and the Admiral provided the undercover agents with comms and data collectors.

To ensure coordination between the Navy and the ISB, Yularen agreed to correspond with Commander Vanto using specific frequencies and passcodes. After briefing Vanto, Yularen inquired about the unusual positioning of Thrawn's Imperial Star Destroyer Chimaera and the rest of the task force, including the disabled light cruisers. Despite the ships' vulnerable position, Vanto urged Yularen to trust Thrawn's tactics. Not fully trusting Thrawn's plan, Yularen asked Vanto to monitor his commanding officer and expressed concern that Thrawn had become fixated on stopping Nightswan.

In secret, Thrawn communicated with Nightswan, and the two met in an empty field to discuss a peaceful resolution to the siege. Despite their philosophical differences, Thrawn offered Nightswan a means to join the Chiss Ascendancy to protect the galaxy from threats from the Unknown Regions. Unwilling to abandon his men to the mercy of Governor Restos, Nightswan declined Thrawn's offer but convinced the Admiral to minimize civilian casualties at Creekpath. Following the meeting, Yularen picked up Thrawn in his airspeeder and questioned why he shouldn't shoot him as a traitor.

In private, Thrawn reassured Yularen that he was only seeking a peaceful outcome to the Creekpath siege. After being assured of Thrawn's loyalty, Yularen questioned him about the placement of the four light cruisers. Thrawn explained that he had positioned them at a distance to prevent any surface attack. When Yularen expressed concern that the light cruisers' positions left them vulnerable to attack, Thrawn responded that this was to prevent theft. Not understanding Thrawn's tactics, Yularen chided Thrawn for his lack of political acumen. Yularen also expressed concern about the lack of contact from Pryce and Gudry.

Unbeknownst to Yularen, Pryce and Gudry had fallen out. With Gundry reneging on his promise to evacuate Pryce's parents, Pryce had killed him following a struggle. Meanwhile, Colonel Yularen dispatched a special squad to retrieve the two, believing they were in danger. Pryce and her family reached the Imperial lines safely, where they sought refuge at Major Talmege's headquarters. Despite the presence of Yularen's special squad and numerous civilians, Pryce used Gudry's stolen remote to detonate Nightswan's cache of explosives. While this ended the threat of Nightswan's insurgents, many civilians were killed. In space, Thrawn successfully used the four light cruisers as bait to lure the insurgent fleet into a trap.

Yularen reports on the devastation of the Creekpath facility

Following the end of the Creekpath siege, Yularen expressed outrage at the high civilian death toll and compared the incident to the Clone Wars. While official reports suggested that Gudry had detonated the explosives to prevent his capture, Yularen indirectly blamed Pryce for the bombing, unaware that she was directly responsible for the incident. Yularen's forces also located and identified Nightswan's corpse. Yularen and Vanto then departed, allowing Pryce to speak with Thrawn in private. Pryce convinced Thrawn to take responsibility for the suppression of the Batonn insurgency in exchange for securing command of the Seventh Fleet. Thrawn reluctantly agreed and was promoted to the rank of Grand Admiral by the Emperor.

Hunt for Fulcrum

Much later, Thrawn invited Yularen to assist in identifying a rebel spy operating under the codename Fulcrum. As part of the screening process, Yularen questioned several Imperial officers on the Sector Command staff in the Lothal sector aboard Thrawn's flagship Chimaera, including Captain Brunson, Commander Brom Titus, Lieutenant Yogar Lyste, and his former student Agent Kallus. Lyste and Kallus boarded Thrawn's Imperial Star Destroyer with a captured bounty hunter, who turned out to be the rebel Ezra Bridger.

During a meeting with Kallus and Lyste, Yularen urged his comrades to remain vigilant for any signs of rebel activity. Thrawn also informed the attendees that he was close to locating the Phoenix Cell's Chopper Base on the planet Atollon. After exiting the meeting, Yularen chatted with Kallus about Fulcrum's identity. Kallus asserted that the rebel spy was definitely an officer due to the high-level intelligence leak and suggested someone in the Communications Division. However, Yularen believed that was too obvious and suspected that Fulcrum had their own communication system. Kallus also pledged to assist his former mentor. During a private meeting with Thrawn and Pryce, Thrawn voiced his suspicion that the spy had attended their interviews. When Colonel Yularen reported that a coded message had been transmitted from the Chimaera following the arrival of Lyste and Kallus' prisoner, Yularen then accompanied Thrawn and Pryce to interrogate the prisoner.

Yularen with Thrawn aboard the ISD Chimaera

Upon arriving in the Chimaera's detention block, Yularen and his comrades discovered that the prisoner had been freed. After Yularen found that the records indicated that someone using Yogar Lyste's code cylinder was the last person to enter the brig, Yularen began to suspect that Lyste was Fulcrum. After Thrawn narrowly survived an assassination attempt in his office, Yularen was contacted by the Grand Admiral, who instructed him to proceed to the hangar with stormtrooper reinforcements. Yularen arrived too late to apprehend the rebels but accepted Kallus' account that Lyste was the rebel spy Fulcrum. Despite Lyste's protests, Yularen ordered his stormtroopers to escort the Lieutenant away.

Publicly, Yularen cited Lyste's code cylinder as proof of the officer's guilt. After Kallus and Pryce had left Thrawn's office, Yularen privately confided his doubts about Lyste's guilt to the Grand Admiral. Thrawn agreed and then presented Yularen with Ezra's helmet, which was inscribed with an image of a loth-cat. When Yularen asked Thrawn why Kallus had withheld Ezra's identity, Thrawn concluded that Kallus was indeed Fulcrum and had framed Lyste to conceal his actions. Yularen expressed shock that one of his former pupils was a traitor, prompting Thrawn to remark that Yularen had allowed his affection for his former pupil to deceive him. With Fulcrum "officially" captured, Thrawn decided to allow Kallus to continue operating in order to lure the rebels out of hiding.

The formal announcement of the Alliance to Restore the Republic took place in 2 BBY, when Senator Mon Mothma, having publicly denounced Emperor Palpatine after the Ghorman Massacre, brought together disparate rebel factions throughout the galaxy. Approximately two years after this, during the Liberation of Lothal, Ryder Azadi, the one-time Governor of Lothal, successfully impersonated Yularen. This was done to deceive a dubious Imperial officer into adhering to a fabricated Protocol 13 directive. Yularen's esteemed reputation within the Empire ensured the success of this ruse, thus trapping the entire Imperial garrison stationed on Lothal aboard the Dome, a mobile Imperial Planetary Occupation Facility. The rebels triumphed in the subsequent battle, leading to the garrison's annihilation and the disappearance of both Thrawn and his Seventh Fleet, effectively ending Imperial control over Lothal. The Empire suffered another setback later that year when agents of the Rebellion executed theft of the Death Star's technical readouts from Scarif. Cassian Andor, the same individual Yularen and the ISB had been trying to apprehend five years prior, was a crucial figure in this operation.

Final days aboard the Death Star

Following the Battle of Scarif, Colonel Yularen joined other key members of the Death Star's command structure, including Tarkin, Motti, and General Tagge, in a conference room. Their purpose was to deliberate on the Empire's current standing and the security measures in place for the battle station. Throughout the majority of the meeting, the colonel maintained his silence, observing the exchange between Motti and Tagge as they argued about the threat the Rebel Alliance posed to the Empire's armed forces. Even when Tarkin announced the Emperor's decision to dissolve the Imperial Senate, Yularen remained composed and impassive. He continued to attentively watch the progression of the meeting, listening as the others discussed the whereabouts of the missing Death Star plans and maintaining his composure as Darth Vader—formerly Anakin Skywalker, and Yularen's past Jedi commander—used the Force choke technique to subdue Motti for his lack of faith in the Force's powers.

Yularen and another intelligence officer aboard the Death Star

Sometime after this assembly, a makeshift group of soon-to-be Rebels, including smuggler pilot Han Solo, his Wookiee partner Chewbacca, and Vader's secret offspring, the future Jedi Luke Skywalker, managed to infiltrate the Death Star. Their mission was to rescue Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan, who had been taken prisoner after attempting to deliver the stolen Death Star schematics to the Rebel Alliance. As part of their infiltration strategy, Solo and Skywalker donned stormtrooper disguises and pretended to be escorting Chewbacca to the detention block where the Princess was being held. While the trio waited for a turbolift to transport them to the prison level, Yularen and another ISB officer walked past them, completely unaware of their true identities.

Skywalker's operation was a success; the Princess was freed and successfully transported to the Rebel base located on Yavin 4. However, the Death Star was able to track them to the Yavin system due to a tracking device that had been placed aboard Solo's freighter. Determined to destroy the battle station, the Alliance launched an attack. Skywalker, flying a T-65 X-wing starfighter, successfully completed the mission. His proton torpedoes struck the Death Star's reactor core, causing a massive explosion that destroyed the station. Colonel Wullf Yularen perished in this devastating blast.

Legacy

Shortly after the Battle of Yavin, Senior Lieutenant Iden Versio and Lieutenant Junior Grade Gideon Hask discussed the destruction of the Death Star. Versio commented that Yularen was among the most valuable Imperial personnel lost in the station's destruction, expressing the opinion that his survival would have been more beneficial than that of a TIE fighter pilot. In 5 ABY, while searching the Hall of Imperial Register on Coruscant after learning of the disappearance of the Emperor's personal Super Star Destroyer, the Eclipse, Grand Admiral Rae Sloane discovered an image crystal that displayed a still image of Palpatine alongside several Imperial officers, including Yularen.

Personality and traits

Wullf Yularen, a human male, was approximately 1.81 meters (5 feet, 11 inches) tall, possessing [blue](/article/color] eyes and a fair complexion. In the early stages of the Clone War, his hair was a dark brown hue, but it gradually turned gray throughout the conflict, eventually becoming completely white.

Colonel Yularen was straight-forward, by-the-book officer but able to adapt when necessary.

Even as the Clone Wars began, Yularen was already known among his colleagues as a sharp and competent veteran naval officer. Despite his disagreements with the impulsive and often reckless General Skywalker, Yularen maintained a deep respect for the chain of command, a quality that drove him to assist his Jedi General in any way possible. Indeed, he generally adhered strictly to regulations, but he was not incapable of expressing respect, albeit grudgingly, for Skywalker. He demonstrated this respect when Skywalker employed unconventional tactics to outmaneuver Admiral Trench, whose defeat Yularen had previously doubted. Yularen was also impressed by Skywalker's use of Force abilities during combat. However, he grew frustrated with the general's recklessness and frequent disregard for orders. Yularen valued efficiency and believed that a warship's crew should emulate the example set by its leaders, wishing Skywalker would provide a better one. He also made sure to maintain the strict demeanor expected of an officer.

Colonel Yularen held the Chiss Imperial Navy officer Thrawn in high regard, admiring his creativity and brilliant strategies to the point of deeming him worthy of joining the Imperial Security Bureau. Recognizing that Thrawn was an outsider in a xenophobic Imperial Military, Yularen made a conscious effort to cultivate civilian allies for the alien officer. Nevertheless, Yularen was troubled by Thrawn's unconventional methods and willingness to negotiate with the enemy. While Yularen acknowledged that Thrawn prioritized minimizing civilian casualties, he cautioned Thrawn that his attempt to negotiate with Nightswan could be interpreted as treason. As a member of the ISB, Yularen was actively involved in leading Imperial counterinsurgency operations against undercover insurgents. As a veteran of the Clone Wars, Yularen was deeply disturbed by the high number of civilian deaths during the siege of Creekpath mine, which evoked painful memories of that conflict.

Yularen's role as the ISB director and colonel corresponded to his previous rank of fleet admiral. Yularen took pride in the accomplishments of Agent Kallus, one of his former protégés and a promising Imperial Security Bureau Agent. Yularen's strong investigative abilities led Thrawn to seek his assistance in uncovering the rebel spy Fulcrum. Yularen's trust and respect for Kallus caused him to overlook the ISB agent as a potential suspect. Kallus exploited Yularen's trust by fabricating evidence that implicated another officer, Lieutenant Yogar Lyste. While Yularen harbored private doubts about Lyste being Fulcrum, he was initially swayed by the presence of Lyste's cylinder code. Yularen was shocked to discover that Kallus had become a traitor to the Empire.

Skills and abilities

Colonel Yularen was a highly skilled and level-headed investigator.

Wullf Yularen was a seasoned officer celebrated for his leadership skills and military strategies. He was also proficient in blaster combat and renowned as an intelligence expert. Following the Battle of Malastare Narrows, Yularen spent some time working in the Senate Bureau of Intelligence before retiring. When the Clone War broke out, he rejoined the Republic Navy, serving as an admiral and commanding Anakin Skywalker's fleet. After the Clone War concluded, Yularen returned to intelligence work, resigning his admiral's commission to pursue a career with the Imperial Security Bureau, where he attained the rank of colonel. Yularen was appointed as the primary liaison between the ISB and its main rival, the Naval Intelligence Agency, and was responsible for ensuring cooperation between the Empire's various intelligence agencies. After the NIA was integrated into Imperial Intelligence, Yularen also became its Deputy Director.

Equipment

During the Clone War, Wullf Yularen wore the uniform of a Republic admiral, later switching to the white tunic upon joining the Imperial Security Bureau. He diligently maintained the polish of his black boots, adhering to regulations.

Behind the scenes

Wullf Yularen made his initial appearance as an unnamed background character in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. Fan communities have attempted to identify the actor who portrayed him. The fan website Aveleyman once claimed that he was played by "Robert Clarke." Ann Skinner's continuity notes mentioned "Robin Clarke" as an actor portraying an Imperial officer, but the secondary source Star Wars Aficionado did not confirm whether that name was associated with Yularen's role. Yularen was later incorporated into the 2008 Star Wars: The Clone Wars film as a recurring character. In that film, the subsequent television series, and the Star Wars Rebels television series, he was voiced by Tom Kane. The character returned to live-action for the first time in 45 years in the television series Andor, portrayed by Malcolm Sinclair.

The creators of The Clone Wars film explained in their commentary that they had assumed Yularen was a Grand Admiral during the events of Episode IV, based on his white uniform. As a result, they chose to depict Yularen as an Admiral, showcasing his progression through the ranks.

The 2015 reference book Ultimate Star Wars stated that Yularen was born on Anaxes, while the 2021 reference book Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Character Encyclopedia - Join the Battle! clarified that he was raised there. Given that Join the Battle! is the more recent source, this article assumes that Yularen was born on Coruscant but may have been raised on Anaxes.

Within Star Wars Legends, Wullf Yularen was first identified by name in the card game Star Wars Customizable Card Game. In the StarWars.com Encyclopedia and the Databank, Yularen's first name was originally spelled "Wulff," differing from the "Wullf" spelling used in the Star Wars Customizable Card Game, thus making the new spelling part of the Star Wars canon. However, Tarkin and Ultimate Star Wars (2015), a sourcebook published by Dorling Kindersley, used the original Star Wars Legends spelling of his name. This inconsistency was later corrected, with Yularen's Databank page being updated to reflect the "Wullf" spelling. In the end credits of some early The Clone Wars episodes, his last name was incorrectly spelled as "Yularan."

Timothy Zahn, the author of the Thrawn trilogy in Star Wars Legends, expressed his desire to write a novel centered around Yularen, as he considered him his favorite background Star Wars character. This aspiration was later fulfilled with the release of the novel Thrawn on April 11, 2017, which featured Yularen working alongside the titular character during his ascent.
