Juahir Madras

Juahir Madras was a human woman residing on Coruscant during the Galactic Empire's rule. During her time spent in the galaxy's capital, Madras became friends with Driller MarDapp, who spearheaded the Higher Skies Advocacy Group, as well as Arihnda Pryce from Lothal. Initially, she worked as a waitress, but later transitioned into a martial arts teacher at the Yinchom Dojo. This dojo was a training facility for aspiring bodyguards assigned to members of the Imperial Senate. H'sishi owned the dojo, which was situated in the Federal District of Galactic City.

Secretly, Madras and MarDapp were involved in an espionage ring, gathering intelligence for the rebel leader Nightswan by spying on the Empire. Madras leveraged her position at the Yimchom Dojo to persuade bodyguards to spy on their government clients. However, Pryce exposed the ring, informing Colonel Wullf Yularen of the Imperial Security Bureau. In exchange for confessing, Madras avoided the death penalty and was instead incarcerated at the Oovo Four detention center.

Biography

Early life

During the Imperial Era, Juahir made her home on the world of Coruscant. As a student, Juahir practiced various forms of hand-to-hand combat. Later in life, she set aside those skills to work as a waiter.

Meeting Arihnda Pryce

In the years leading up to the Battle of Yavin, Juahir, along with her friend Driller MarDapp, developed a friendship with Arihnda Pryce, a Lothalite who served as an assistant to Domus Renking, the corrupt Senator representing Lothal. Arihnda was able to help Juahir secure an apartment in her own building. In return, Juahir treated her friend to dinner at a high-end restaurant on Coruscant. During the Ascension Week festivities on Coruscant, Arihnda assisted Juahir and Driller in gaining entry to the exclusive Core Square located within Coruscant's Federal District. As a gesture of gratitude, Juahir's friend MarDrapp allowed the women to stay at his luxurious apartment in Sestra Towers.

While attending a gathering at the Alisandre Hotel's ballroom, Madras and her companions mingled with several Imperial governors, moffs, and senators. During the event, Juahir and Driller took notice of Thrawn, a blue-skinned Chiss Senior Lieutenant who was quickly rising in the ranks of the Imperial Navy. When Driller inquired whether Thrawn was a Pantoran suffering from an "eye condition," Juahir scolded him for his lack of tact. Although Madras initially considered approaching Thrawn, she ultimately decided against it.

After Pryce spoke with the Imperials, she left to deliver a datacard to Moff Ghadi, which resulted in Ghadi blackmailing Pryce into returning the datacard to Senator Renking. This caused Renking to lose funding for his citizen assistance offices, leading to Pryce's dismissal. Pryce concealed this incident from Juahir, claiming to feel unwell. After losing her job and being evicted from her apartment, Juahir offered to let her friend stay with her. Pryce declined the offer and instead stayed with Driller for the remainder of Ascension Week until she found a new job at the Proam Avenue Citizen Assistance.

Becoming a rebel

Witnessing the mistreatment of her friend Pryce by Senator Renking led Juahir to perceive the Galactic Empire as corrupt. Consequently, she accepted Driller's offer to join his espionage ring, which gathered intelligence on Imperial mining operations for the elusive rebel leader known as Nightswan. Juahir resumed her martial arts training and began working at the Yinchom Dojo in Bartanish Four Sector, owned by the Togorian H'sishi. The dojo trained and supplied bodyguards to Imperial officials and senators. Juahir utilized her position as a martial arts instructor to recruit and blackmail bodyguards into spying for Driller's Higher Skies Advocacy Group.

Working together, Juahir and Driller invited Pryce to the opulent Pinnacle restaurant on Coruscant. There, Driller successfully recruited Pryce into Higher Skies, believing that her expertise in mines, mining, and refining would benefit their undercover operations. They also hoped to eventually enlist her in their rebel cause. Seeking to escape her dead-end job, Pryce accepted the offer and agreed to move into Juahir's apartment near the Senate Building. Due to her physically demanding work as a martial arts instructor, Juahir was looking for someone to cook for her. Pryce, who was a skilled cook, accepted Juahir's offer. The three friends then shared dessert.

After Pryce settled into her new job, Juahir came to Pryce's rescue when the turbolift she was traveling in malfunctioned and plunged into Coruscant's dangerous Level 4120. Pryce was confronted by a gang of six youths, but Juahir arrived in time with one of her students, Ottlis Dos. Juahir defeated two of the thugs in unarmed combat, causing the rest of the gang to flee. As a result of the incident, Juahir gained Arihnda's trust and allowed Ottlis to give Pryce martial arts lessons. In return, Pryce treated Juahir and Ottlis to dinner that night.

Imperial entanglements

Later, Colonel Yularen, accompanied by Captain Thrawn and Ensign Vanto, visited the Yinchom Dojo to investigate Yularen's theory that Nightswan was recruiting bodyguards as spies. On that day, Juahir was overseeing a sparring session while Pryce was working out. Despite the presence of the Imperial visitors, Juahir did not order the students to stop sparring until H'sishi arrived and instructed her to do so.

Due to her involvement in rebel activities, Juahir was visibly uncomfortable in Thrawn's presence. After Yularen explained the reason for their visit, Thrawn requested permission to spar with H'sishi using sticks, claiming that the Empire was interested in trainers for a potential new urban combat unit. Juahir reacted with discomfort when Pryce told Thrawn that she worked for the Higher Skies Advocacy Group.

Following the visit, Thrawn and Yularen discussed their visit to the Yinchom Dojo, including Juahir's suspicious behavior. Thrawn realized that Juahir had stalled their meeting to prepare herself. As an ISB agent, Yularen suspected that Madras had something to hide, which Thrawn deduced was connected to Higher Skies.

Unbeknownst to Juahir, her student Ottlis Dos was working as a double agent for his employer, Moff Ghadi. Due to Higher Skies' activities, smugglers had uncovered some of Ghadi's confidential information, and raiders had attacked one of Ghadi's mines. After learning of Higher Skies' involvement, Ghadi demanded that Pryce spy on Higher Skies. Desperate, Pryce sought out Thrawn, who convinced her to spy on both Higher Skies and Ghadi to gain Colonel Yularen's favor and protection.

Downfall and arrest

ISB officers arrested Juahir

After Pryce managed to bait Ghadi by offering to provide her with Higher Skies' files on his rival Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin, Driller secured Pryce an audience with the Grand Moff himself. During the meeting, Pryce betrayed Juahir and Driller by exposing their espionage activities, as well as Ghadi's opportunism. Pryce had copied Higher Skies' files using a double-thief program. In exchange for this information, Pryce convinced Tarkin to appoint her as Governor of Lothal and to give Thrawn's friend Vanto a long overdue promotion.

The morning after the meeting, one of Juahir's students, Kaniki, attempted to assassinate Senator Evidorn, having been convinced by Juahir of the "evils" of the Empire. In response, Colonel Yularen decided to arrest her personally. Accompanied by Juahir's friend Pryce, Yularen and his ISB agents apprehended the unsuspecting martial arts instructor after she had finished training two of Senator Xurfel's newest bodyguards. Simultaneously, other ISB agents arrested Driller and other Higher Skies employees.

When Pryce and Yularen confronted her about Kaniki's assassination attempt, Juahir protested that she had instructed the bodyguards to gather information, not to kill their targets. Pryce then revealed that she had exposed Driller and Higher Skies' espionage work to the Imperial authorities. Before the ISB took Juahir into custody, Pryce demanded to know if Juahir had been her friend or if she was a tool.

A broken Juahir told Pryce that she was her friend and reiterated that the incident with Senator Renking had showed her how corrupt the system was. Pryce refused to believe Juahir's explanation and accused Juahir of manipulating her. As the ISB agents led her through the door, Juahir begged Pryce to help her. Pryce told Juahir to cooperate fully with Colonel Yularen to avoid execution and assured her that once she became governor, she would try to get her out of prison in a few years, but in case she wasn't able to do so, Juahir should have thought about choosing her friends better.

Imprisonment

Following Pryce's advice, Juahir cooperated with Colonel Yularen and revealed everything she knew about Higher Skies' espionage, including their dealings with Nightswan. Honoring Pryce's promise, the Empire spared Juahir execution and imprisoned her at the detention center on Oovo 4. For over a year, Juahir wrote about twenty letters pleading with the now Governor Pryce to help her. Unable to forgive Juahir for her "betrayal," Pryce ignored the letters.

Personality and traits

Juahir (right) and her friends Driller and Pryce

Juahir Madras was a human woman characterized by fair skin, brown hair, and dark eyes. She maintained friendships with Driller and the Lothalian expatriate Arihnda Pryce. Known for her friendly and kind nature, Juahir readily extended assistance to friends like Pryce during times of need.

After witnessing Pryce's unjust dismissal at the hands of the corrupt Senator Renking, she came to view the Galactic Empire as corrupt. This led her to join Driller's spy network, which was centered around his advocacy group Higher Skies. Nevertheless, Juahir and Driller shared a vision of making the Empire a better place for everyone.

Juahir hoped to sway Pryce to her cause. However, Pryce was primarily focused on advancing her own political career and seeking retribution against Senator Renking and Governor Ryder Azadi. Pryce viewed the Empire as a means to achieve these goals. When Juahir and Driller stood in her way, Pryce was willing to discard them.

While Juahir believed that Pryce was a genuine friend, Pryce suspected that Juahir and Driller had been exploiting her to undermine the Empire. Juahir's concealment of her rebel sympathies led Pryce to believe that Juahir had betrayed her. This prompted her to abandon Juahir despite her numerous appeals.

Skills and abilities

Juahir possessed exceptional martial arts skills, which she initially developed during her school years. After becoming involved in Driller's spy network, Juahir became a professional martial arts instructor at the Yinchom Dojo. She leveraged her position to "educate" and coerce bodyguards into spying on their Imperial employers, including senators and government officials. Juahir also demonstrated her combat prowess by taking on several thugs in unarmed combat, defeating two and dispersing the others.

Behind the scenes

Juahir Madras made her debut in Timothy Zahn's 2017 novel Thrawn, a rebooted canonical origins story of the eponymous character. Most of her lines are told from the point of view of Thrawn and Arihnda Pryce, a character from Star Wars Rebels.

She was first illustrated in the Marvel Comics Thrawn 3, a comic adaptation of the novel which debuted on April 11, 2018. She was drawn by Luke Ross and colored by Nolan Woodard.
