Kaliida Shoals Medical Center, situated in the Outer Rim Territories, functioned as a clandestine Haven-class medical station of the Galactic Republic throughout the duration of the Clone Wars. A significant quantity of bacta tanks were present at the station, intended for the recuperation of injured Republic soldiers.
The location of the medical station was initially confidential; however, Darth Sidious, the Sith Lord who was also Palpatine, the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic, utilized his connections to provide the coordinates of the facility to Count Dooku, his Sith apprentice. This information was to be used to benefit the Separatist Alliance.

Dooku then passed along the station's specifics to General Grievous, the cyborg Separatist commander. He instructed Grievous to launch an assault on the medical center utilizing the Malevolence, their esteemed heavy cruiser. Dooku's intention was for Grievous to obliterate the station along with the sixty thousand recovering clone troopers on board, thus inflicting a major setback to the Republic's medical capabilities during the conflict.
After the Republic became aware of the impending Separatist offensive, Admiral Wullf Yularen cautioned Nala Se, the Kaminoan chief in charge of the station, to proceed with the evacuation of all patients. Simultaneously, Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Jedi General, reached out to Naboo, located in the nearby Naboo star system, requesting assistance with the evacuation process. Naboo dispatched medical transports to aid in the operation.
Grievous shortly thereafter arrived, having come from the adjacent Ryndellia system, and initiated the attack on the medical facility. He used the Malevolence's ion cannon to disable the medical transports, before opening fire on them. However, Anakin Skywalker, the Jedi General, and his Shadow Squadron had taken a shortcut through the nearby Kaliida Nebula, and they managed to intercept Grievous before he could destroy the medical station. During the ensuing engagement, Skywalker saw the loss of several of the BTL-B Y-wing starfighter/bombers under his command, but Shadow Squadron was still able to damage the Malevolence's hyperdrive, forcing Grievous to retreat and ensuring the medical station's security.
