Ion cannon

V-150 ion cannon SWB Here is a v-150 planetary ion cannon located at Outpost Beta on the planet Hoth. Ion cannons represented a class of weaponry that discharged ionized particles, which had the capability to disrupt electronic systems. Larger versions were capable of even disabling a large capital ship, for example, the Mega-ion cannons mounted on the Subjugator-class heavy cruiser Malevolence, the v-150 planetary ion cannon employed by the Alliance to Restore the Republic, or the broadside ion cannons found on the MC80 Liberty Type Heavy Star Cruiser. During the Battle of Scrim Island, persistent fire from several planetary ion cannons inflicted a significant degree of hull damage to at least one Arquitens-class light cruiser.

The Eta-2 Actis-class light interceptor was armed with ion cannons that fired bursts of plasma, causing temporary electrical malfunctions to a target upon impact.

Y-wing starfighters also carried ion cannons, most prominently those utilized by the Alliance's Gold Squadron. Despite a somewhat restricted firing arc, the ion cannons possessed considerable power; three blasts could disable an Arquitens-class command cruiser, and only one blast was needed to completely disable a TIE/d "Defender" Multi-Role Starfighter starfighter. This was shown during a skirmish within the Archeon Nebula.

History

Clone Wars

A capital ship ion cannon battery firing

In the early stages of the Clone Wars, the Confederacy of Independent Systems outfitted the massive Subjugator-class heavy cruiser, the Malevolence, with enormous ion cannons. Under the command of General Grievous, the Malevolence engaged numerous Republic warships and kept the ion cannons' existence a secret from the Republic. Following the Battle of Abregado, the Republic became aware of the ion cannons.

Subsequently, the Malevolence's ion cannons were disabled by the Republic's Shadow Squadron during the battle close to the Kaliida Nebula. The Malevolence was later destroyed when Jedi General Anakin Skywalker sabotaged the vessel, causing it to collide with the Dead Moon of Antar.

Galactic Civil War

An Imperial-class Star Destroyer could be disabled by multiple ion blasts.

During the Galactic Civil War against the Galactic Empire, the Y-wing bombers of the Rebellion's Gold Squadron were equipped with ion cannons. MC75 Star Cruisers that were operated by the Rebel Alliance were armed with heavy ion emplacements.

In 3 ABY, during the evacuation of their Echo Base on Hoth, the Rebel Alliance utilized a stationary ion cannon to disable Star Destroyers belonging to the blockading Death Squadron, thus enabling rebel ships to escape the star system. By the later years of the Galactic Civil War, a number of MC80 Liberty Type Heavy Star Cruisers had been fitted with three ion cannons on their port side.

First Order-Resistance War

During an attack launched by the Resistance on the Sith Eternal stronghold of Exegol to prevent the launch of the Final Order fleet, Allegiant General Enric Pryde gave the order for the fleet's densely packed Xyston-class Star Destroyers to initiate firing solely with their ion cannons, in order to reduce the potential damage caused by friendly fire.
