The Death Wind was a murderous squad that indiscriminately targeted both the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars. Their designation was derived from the Death Wind spice trading route. The group was established by Mekedrix, a Roonian soldier who defected from the Grand Army of the Republic due to the psychological damage inflicted by the conflict.
Following his involvement in the catastrophic Battle of Abrion Bridge, Commander Mekedrix later distinguished himself in the Battle of Ryloth and the Battle of Saleucami. Nevertheless, the horrors of war left him deeply scarred. After the fall of the Temple of Eedit on Devaron, he abandoned his post within the Galactic Republic. Convinced that war was a facade and that the true purpose of existence was the act of killing and dying, he founded the Death Wind, a death-worshipping cult, naming it after a trade route near Roon.
The Death Wind established their base of operations within the ruins of an ancient Sith Temple dating back to the Jedi-Sith War, located in the swamps of Ando. They launched attacks without discrimination, ambushing units of clone troopers, assassinating leading figures from various Separatist councils, and massacring civilians at a Commerce Guild center on Minntooine, even though it wasn't a military objective.
Three months subsequent to the Minntooine attack, the Republic uncovered the Death Wind's hideout and secretly dispatched Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker with orders to eliminate Mekedrix. In close proximity to the Sith Temple ruins, they were ambushed by hidden Death Wind members, who relieved them of their lightsabers. Inside the Temple, the two Jedi confronted Mekedrix, who was now armed with a sword crafted from the bones of a clone trooper.
Obi-Wan requested Mekedrix to yield and accompany them, but Mekedrix insisted he had committed no wrongdoing. He justified his actions by claiming he had revealed "the truth" to those he murdered, asserting that death was life's ultimate objective and that the clones, the Confederacy, and the Jedi were all, in the end, servants of death. Obi-Wan, however, countered by stating that life is what gives the universe meaning and reminded Mekedrix of his friends and the beauty of sunrise on his homeplanet. Seemingly enraged, Mekedrix attacked Obi-Wan, who closed his eyes in acceptance of his fate. However, Anakin used the Force to retrieve his lightsaber and ran Mekedrix through. With his dying breath, Mekedrix expressed his regret, stating that it appeared to be the quickest path back to the sunrise.
