Roon, a celestial object situated in the Outer Rim Territories, acted as a nexus connecting several hyperlanes: the Cloak of the Sith, the Death Wind Corridor, Mumble's Turnaround, and the Triellus Trade Route. This astronomical body was one of the three points that defined the Spice Triangle trading circuit. During the Clone Wars, the Roonians inhabiting Roon, which included many humans, offered their support to the Galactic Republic's war efforts through Roon's military defense forces. Around 22 BBY, Mekedrix and Oron, two Roonians, spearheaded a company in a conflict against Separatist Alliance forces on Abrion Major, an agriworld.
In the time of the Galactic Empire, Roon fell under the governance of an Imperial governor, while the Pyke Syndicate exerted its influence over the black market trade within Roon and the broader Spice Triangle. Around 10 BBY, Tryphon Leo, a smuggler, hatched a scheme to monopolize the Spice Triangle by attempting to bribe the Pykes and the Roon governor to facilitate their plans, but death intervened before their scheme could be put into action. Following the theft of the Death Star plans in 1 BBY, the Rebel Alliance corvette, Tantive IV, charted a course that took it through Roon en route to the planet Tatooine.
Roon, an astronomical entity within the Roon system, was located in the Outer Rim Territories and the Slice, specifically in grid square S-15 of the Standard Galactic Grid. It was situated along the Triellus Trade Route hyperlane, positioned between Molavar and a gas giant above which the Cosmatanic Steppes mantle layer was suspended. This astronomical body marked the terminus of Mumble's Turnaround, a hyperspace route favored by smugglers that linked it to Seylott. Furthermore, Roon was connected to Ryloth via the Cloak of the Sith hyperlane. The Death Wind Corridor, a route for spice trade, also traversed this celestial body.
Roon, along with Tatooine and Ryloth, comprised the Spice Triangle, a trade network interconnected by the Triellus Trade Route, the Corellian Run, and the Cloak of the Sith. Roon orbited a sun and exhibited blue and green hues when observed from space. The astronomical body was the location of the Iquoonian Peaks, which displayed bands of gemstones exposed to the sun during the morning. It also lent its name to the Roon Tours travel agency, the sport known as Roon Drainsweeper, and the Roon way hyperlane within the Abrion sector.
During the time of the Galactic Republic, Roon maintained its own military defense forces. Following the onset of the Clone Wars between the Republic and the Separatist Alliance in 22 BBY, Roon's forces allied with the Republic, participating in a skirmish at a space station near Molavar. In that year, the military defense forces dispatched a company, led by Commander Mekedrix and Lieutenant Oron, both Roonians, to support the Republic's 212th Attack Battalion, commanded by Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, on Abrion Major. Oron died in the ensuing battle.
Mekedrix remained in service to the Republic until shortly after the Devaron massacre in 20 BBY, when he defected and began leading the Death Wind, a death-worshipping terrorist group. Admiral Wullf Yularen grew suspicious of Mekedrix's newfound allegiance, partly because Roon, his homeworld, was located along the Death Wind Corridor. Yularen dispatched Kenobi and Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker to confront the traitor.
Kenobi and Skywalker located Mekedrix on Ando, where Kenobi attempted to dissuade him from his death-revering beliefs by arguing that life gave "meaning" to a sunrise, referencing the morning sunrise on the Iquoonian Peaks and its gemstones. Mekedrix retorted that the Jedi Master knew nothing about his homeworld, but Kenobi persisted, questioning what "use" death had for Roon. Mekedrix then attacked the two Jedi, only to be killed by Skywalker. In his final moments, Mekedrix claimed that his failed assault was merely the "quickest way back to the sunrise."
With the fall of the Separatist Alliance in 19 BBY, the Clone Wars concluded, and Roon transitioned under the rule of the Galactic Empire, the Republic's successor, governed by an Imperial governor. By 10 BBY, the Pyke Syndicate dominated the black market trade within the Spice Triangle, including Roon, which Maz Kanata, the former pirate queen, marked as a point of interest on a map of treasure caches, shadowportss, outlaw garages, and other points of interest in the Smuggler's Guide.
After stealing the Smuggler's Guide and discovering the locations of Kanata's treasure caches in its map, Tryphon Leo, a smuggler, planned to use the wealth from the caches to fund an operation to control trade in the Spice Triangle and collect tolls. Leo believed that bribing the Pykes, the Hutt Clan, and Roon's governor would facilitate their plans and documented their intentions in the Smuggler's Guide. However, the smuggler's plans were thwarted when they died while attempting to reach one of Kanata's caches.
In 1 BBY, the Rebel Alliance stole the plans for the Empire's superweapon battle station, the Death Star. The plans were carried aboard the Alliance corvette Tantive IV, commanded by Captain Raymus Antilles and the Alderaanian Princess Leia Organa, and the vessel fled through several Outer Rim locations, including Roon, to reach Tatooine. Roon was mentioned in "Index of Organizations," a survival compendium circulated by Carson Teva during the New Republic Era, as part of the Spice Triangle where the Pyke Syndicate operated. In 34 ABY, Chandrila Star Line's Star Cruiser Halcyon displayed a partial map of the galaxy on its screens that indicated Roon's location.
The inhabitants of Roon included humans, known as Roonians. The Roonians maintained their own military defense forces, which were affiliated with the Galactic Republic.
Roon was first introduced into current Star Wars canon through a galactic map in Fantasy Flight Games' 2016 roleplaying boxed set, Star Wars: The Force Awakens Beginner Game. It was later visually depicted in the 2018 reference book Star Wars: Smuggler's Guide, authored by Daniel Wallace. Roon's initial in-universe appearance occurred when it was depicted on a map within Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, an immersive roleplaying experience at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, which opened on March 1, 2022. The planet Roon originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, debuting in "Tail of the Roon Comets," the tenth episode of Star Wars: Droids: The Adventures of R2-D2 and C-3PO, which aired on November 9, 1985.
