212th Attack Battalion

The 212th Attack Battalion, also known as the 212th Republic Battalion or simply the 212th, was a battalion of clone troopers that fought for the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. This conflict pitted the Galactic Republic against the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Functioning as part of the 7th Sky Corps, the unit was under the command of Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi and Clone Marshal Commander Cody. A specialized contingent within the battalion was the 212th Recon Division, and it also included units like Foxtrot Group and Ghost Company. To bolster its ranks during the early days of the Clone Wars, the 212th received a full company of Roon's military defense forces, adding Roonian soldiers to its roster for the Battle of Abrion Bridge.

The 212th, serving under the leadership of General Kenobi and Clone Commander Cody, earned a reputation for its effective strategies and participation in key battles, including the Battle of Christophsis, the Battle of Teth, and the Battle of Ryloth. Furthermore, the 212th played a significant role in the Second Battle of Geonosis, where they were instrumental in destroying a newly built droid factory on Geonosis and capturing Archduke Poggle the Lesser. During the Battle of Umbara, the 212th, alongside the 501st Legion, placed the fallen Jedi General Pong Krell under arrest for treason. In an attempt to bring the conflict to a close, the battalion was sent to Utapau to fight the Separatist Droid Army, where Kenobi ultimately killed General Grievous.

However, during the Battle of Utapau, Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine issued Order 66 to the 212th and the rest of the clone army, commanding them to purge the Jedi Order for alleged treason against the Republic. Programmed for unwavering obedience, Commander Cody and his troopers followed the chancellor's directive, although they were unsuccessful in their attempt to eliminate Kenobi. Following the end of the Clone Wars, the 212th was integrated into the Imperial Military under the newly-established Galactic Empire. As a stormtrooper battalion within the Empire's forces, the 212th participated in the subjugation of the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk under the command of General Kahdah.

Description

Command

The 212th Attack Battalion served under Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi and Clone Commander Cody.

Throughout the three-year duration of the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, High Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi and Clone Marshal Commander Cody held the position of commanding officers for the 212th Attack Battalion. Furthermore, Clone Captain Gregor and Clone Lieutenant Waxer were also part of the battalion, holding the military rank of an officer.

In addition to General Kenobi, Commander Mekedrix and Lieutenant Oron were non-clone officers within the 212th, both previously serving in Roon's military defense forces before joining the battalion. During the early years of the Imperial Era, General Kahdah took command of the 212th.

Organization

During the Clone Wars, the 212th Attack Battalion was integrated into the 7th Sky Corps of the Grand Army of the Republic. The 212th consisted of airborne and stealth infantry companies, with its clone paratroopers organized within the 2nd Airborne Company. Moreover, the well-known Ghost Company was part of the 212th, along with Lieutenant Waxer's platoon and Captain Gregor's commando Foxtrot Group. The battalion also deployed the 212th Recon Division, a specialized detachment. Mekedrix's company was temporarily assigned to the 212th to provide additional military support during the Battle of Abrion Bridge. A red unit was also among their ranks.

Culture and training

Under the guidance of General Kenobi and Clone Commander Cody, the 212th established a notable record within the Republic Military, securing victories on various planets throughout the galaxy, from Ryloth to Umbara and Utapau. The battalion was particularly recognized for its utilization of direct assaults and siege-breaking strategies, often fighting alongside the elite 501st Legion. The 212th Recon Division received specialized training for conducting covert operations behind enemy lines.

Equipment and vehicles

Members of the 212th Attack Battalion wore clone trooper armor with orange markings.

The members of the 212th utilized both the Phase I and Phase II iterations of clone trooper armor. Initially, Cody wore armor with yellow markings, similar to other commanders during the war's early stages. However, the 212th, like other battalions and units, eventually customized their standard white armor with unique markings, employing orange patterns to identify themselves as part of the 212th Battalion. While some clones within the unit still had white armor, Cody and many others adopted the orange markings to distinguish 212th members among the otherwise identical clone ranks. As the war progressed, more clones adopted this color. The use of special unit markings began with the Phase I armor and continued with Phase II. The 212th Recon Division used a camouflaged version of the Phase I armor to perform their reconnaissance duties.

Regarding weaponry, the 212th had access to a range of blasters, including the standard-issue DC-15A blaster carbine and the DC-15A blaster rifle. The battalion's specialized units were equipped with weapons suitable for their roles, such as the DC-15LE blaster rifle or the Valken-38x sniper rifle. In addition to missile launchers, thermal detonators, and other forms of destructive firepower, the troops also carried Electro Magnetic Pulse grenades to minimize property damage and casualties.

All Terrain Reconnaissance Transports were used by the 212th Battalion's splinter group, the 212th Recon Division, which was trained to operate fast and agile walkers behind enemy lines. The 212th also utilized various other vehicles, including All Terrain Tactical Enforcers and Low Altitude Assault Transports.

Troopers

The 212th, under General Kenobi, regularly worked with the 501st Legion under General Skywalker.

As a battalion within the Grand Army, the 212th's ranks consisted of clone troopers who were bred from the template of Jango Fett and considered the "latest evolution in galactic warfare." Besides standard [troopers](/article/trooper], the 212th also included clone flametroopers, clone trooper officers, clone paratroopers, clone sharpshooters, and heavy weapons clone troopers. Advanced Recon Force Scout Troopers were part of the 212th Recon Division. The 212th Battalion's Foxtrot Group was a squad of elite clone commandos, including Captain Gregor.

The 212th expanded its ranks to include Roonian soldiers, who served alongside the battalion's clones as supplementary units during the attack on Abrion Bridge. Following the Republic's reorganization into the Galactic Empire, the 212th became an Imperial stormtrooper battalion within the larger Stormtrooper Corps.

History

Clone Wars

Service on Christophsis and Teth

The 212th Battalion successfully defended Christophsis against the Separatist Droid Army.

In 22 BBY, the 212th Attack Battalion was dispatched to Christophsis, where they fought alongside the 501st Legion's Torrent Company, led by Jedi General Anakin Skywalker and Clone Captain Rex. During the initial stages of the Battle of Christophsis, the 212th and the 501st attempted to ambush the Separatist Droid Army. However, their ambush was thwarted by Clone Sergeant "Slick," who had secretly betrayed the Republic by becoming a Separatist spy for Asajj Ventress. Slick's actions allowed the Separatists to turn the tables and ambush the Jedi and clones, forcing them to retreat to their base. Although Commander Cody and Captain Rex later arrested Slick, the rogue clone managed to sabotage the base's gunships and AT-TEs. However, the AV-7 Anti-vehicle Artillery Cannons were spared. Utilizing the cannons, the 212th and the 501st managed to hold their ground until Jedi General Yoda arrived with reinforcements.

Following General Kenobi's negotiations with Jabba Desilijic Tiure, the 212th traveled to Teth to assist General Skywalker, Jedi Commander Ahsoka Tano, and Torrent Company in rescuing Jabba's son, Rotta. The 212th successfully rescued the survivors on Teth and picked up General Skywalker and Commander Tano on Tatooine.

Battle of Abrion Bridge

Led by Commander Mekedrix, a company of Roonian soldiers was transferred to the 212th Attack Battalion.

The Battle of Abrion Bridge stemmed from information obtained by General Kenobi and Cody prior to the destruction of Rishi Station. After discovering that the Confederacy's War Faction had created a mega-ion cannon capable of disabling an entire fleet with a single blast, the Republic ordered the 212th and 442nd Siege Battalion to secure the Separatist weapon's schematics on Abrion Major. The Separatist weapons factory was situated on the central island of an archipelago in the western sea, with a single supply bridge serving as its only access point. Consequently, the battalion was divided into two groups to seize both ends of the bridge before converging on the Separatist complex. Due to the operation's scale, the Republic augmented the 212th Battalion with a full company of Roonian soldiers, along with their commanding officers, Commander Mekedrix and Lieutenant Oron.

Though reinforced by Roonian soldiers, the 212th suffered high casualties during the Battle of Abrion Bridge.

Despite Mekedrix's optimistic outlook, Kenobi—still adapting to his new roles as a Jedi Master and a Jedi General—considered Abrion Bridge a "death trap." The 212th was split into Attack-1 and Attack-2, with the former led by Kenobi and Cody, and the latter under Mekedrix and Oron. Kenobi instructed Attack-2 to secure the north side of the bridge while Attack-1 focused on the south. Both groups suffered significant losses while attempting to control the bridge. Although Kenobi and Attack-1 succeeded in acquiring the plans for the ion cannon, Attack-2 failed to capture the north end of Abrion Bridge. As a result, hundreds of Separatist forces, including IG-227 Hailfire-class droid tanks, IG-series droids, and Rogue-class Porax-38 starfighters, approached Kenobi's group from the north.

Kenobi, Mekedrix, and Cody ultimately survived, but Mekedrix described the 212th's losses as "countless." By the battle's end, their casualties included Lieutenant Oron and the clone trooper Airo.

The liberation of Ryloth

The 212th Battalion's Ghost Company served on Ryloth during the Separatist occupation of the Twi'lek homeworld.

During the Battle of Ryloth, the 212th's Ghost Company was deployed to Nabat to secure the landing zone. Upon landing, Ghost Company advanced into Nabat to eliminate a battery of five J-1 proton cannons. Despite an attack from a pack of starving gutkurrs, Ghost Company managed to divert the battle droids while General Kenobi destroyed the proton cannons. After General Mace Windu and the rest of the Republic's forces landed, Kenobi and the 212th were able to seize the Jixuan desert and secure Ryloth's southern hemisphere.

Losses on Felucia and Sarrish

The 212th and the 501st were routed by Separatist forces in the First Battle of Felucia.

During the First Battle of Felucia in 21 BBY, the 212th and the 501st found themselves surrounded by battle droids. They managed to hold their position until General Plo Koon and the 104th Battalion evacuated them from Felucia.

In the war's second year, the 212th and its Foxtrot Group also served on Sarrish. The Battle of Sarrish became one of the Republic's most devastating defeats, during which the 212th suffered heavy casualties. The battalion also lost the members of Foxtrot Group, who were reported as missing in action. Captain Gregor survived the battle but suffered from amnesia while stranded on Abafar.

The second invasion of Geonosis

The 212th, along with other units, participated in the effort to retake Geonosis for the Galactic Republic.

The 212th, along with the 501st, Jet's battalion, the 41st Elite Corps, and General Ki-Adi-Mundi, were dispatched to retake Geonosis from the Separatists. Kenobi and Cody's 212th force were the first to land on Geonosis, while Skywalker and Mundi's troops were forced to crash-land before reaching their designated landing zone. The 212th utilized their gunships and AT-TEs to form a protective perimeter against the Geonosian forces until Skywalker and Mundi's forces arrived.

The 212th fought a swarm of Geonosian zombie drones in the catacombs of the Prograte Temple.

Following the destruction of the primary droid foundry, a platoon from the 212th accompanied Cody, Skywalker, and Kenobi in their search for General Luminara Unduli and Archduke Poggle the Lesser within the catacombs beneath the Progate Temple. They were attacked by Geonosian zombies under the control of Queen Karina the Great. Together, they managed to rescue Unduli, capture Poggle, and bury the queen alive during their escape.

The hunt for General Grievous

The 212th assisted in the rescue of Jedi General Eeth Koth.

The 212th later assisted Kenobi aboard the Arquitens-class light cruiser Surrogator in the rescue of General Eeth Koth, who had been captured by the Separatists before the Battle of Saleucami. Kenobi devised a plan to lure the general onto his starship while Skywalker and General Adi Gallia rescued Koth. Upon arriving near Grievous' fleet, all remaining ships opened fire, except for the Surrogator, using it as bait to draw Grievous into a trap. Cody and his troopers successfully engaged Grievous' commando droids, albeit with some losses, while Kenobi confronted the general. However, Grievous managed to escape the fight and ordered the destruction of the Surrogator. Cody and a few troopers engaged Grievous, attempting to contain him, but the ship's destruction forced them to allow him to escape to the surface of Saleucami.

The 212th pursued General Grievous to Saleucami, intent on capturing the Separatist general.

Kenobi, now in charge of both the 212th Attack Battalion and the 501st Legion, touched down on the planet. He then gave his soldiers orders to proceed toward the remains of the Separatist vessel that Grievous utilized for his escape. Upon examining the crash site, the 212th realized that the event had occurred recently. While the 212th stayed behind to continue their investigation of the area, a small group of 501st troopers, including Rex, moved out to patrol a nearby swampland, with the intention of alerting the rest of the forces if Grievous was spotted. The 212th located a suitable droid for analysis within one of the ship's escape pods. They were then able to determine the locations of the remaining pods, one of which was discovered by nightfall, though it was empty. The 501st troopers, with the exception of Rex who had sustained an injury, were called in to assist in engaging the droids at the final escape pod. They succeeded in finding Grievous and engaging his forces in combat. As a shuttle arrived to extract the general, Kenobi commanded his AT-TEs to target it, however, they were unable to prevent Grievous from escaping.

The mission on Lola Sayu

Members of the 212th infiltrated the Citadel in order to rescue Jedi General Even Piell and Captain Wilhuff Tarkin.

A number of 212th members accompanied Cody, Kenobi, Skywalker, and Rex to Lola Sayu. Their mission was centered around the extraction of General Even Piell and Captain Wilhuff Tarkin from the Citadel. To gain entry to the planet, the entire rescue team underwent carbon freezing in order to circumvent the facility's life-form detection systems. Once they were inside, the 501st trooper known as "Charger" inadvertently revealed the Republic presence to the enemy forces through his death. During their search for Piell, the 212th trooper named "Longshot" was killed by an electric field. After locating the prisoners, Piell joined Kenobi's group, while Tarkin remained with Skywalker's group.

Despite the loss of General Piell, they successfully escaped the Citadel and the planet.

Action on Umbara and Kiros

During the Battle of Umbara, the 212th Battalion and the 501st Legion were tricked into fighting each other by the fallen Jedi General Pong Krell.

Alongside the 501st, the 212th participated in the Battle of Umbara. The 501st was temporarily under the command of General Pong Krell due to Skywalker's recall to Coruscant. Their objective was to secure the Umbaran capital city, while the 501st engaged with the Umbaran Militia. During the conflict, General Krell falsely informed Waxer's platoon that the Umbarans were disguised as clones, which led to an unintended clash between the 212th and the 501st. Rex intervened to halt the fighting. Following Waxer's death, the remaining members of his platoon assisted the 501st in apprehending Dogma and capturing Krell. Despite Krell's act of betrayal, the 212th managed to seize the capital. Subsequently, the 212th went to Kiros, where they surrounded the governor's tower and received a communication from the Separatist commander, Darts D'Nar.

The final days

The 212th continued to engage the Separatist Droid Army in the final days of the Clone Wars.

As the war neared its conclusion, during the Outer Rim Sieges, the 212th and the 501st joined forces to attack a Separatist stronghold situated on Yerbana. Each battalion launched an assault on opposing sides of a bridge. The tactical droid remained elusive, and the 212th suffered substantial losses. General Kenobi rescued Cody from an explosive, and together with the surviving troops, they sought cover. At that moment, the 501st arrived, having completed their portion of the battle. Through a successful diversion, Anakin prompted the tactical droid to reveal itself and subsequently destroyed it, enabling both the 501st and 212th to advance against the enemy forces, securing victory in the battle.

The 212th fought in the Battle of Utapau, where General Kenobi sought to end the war by destroying General Grievous.

Later on, the 212th participated in the Battle of Utapau, with the goal of definitively defeating General Grievous. General Kenobi traveled to Utapau ahead of the main force to confront Grievous, allowing his battalion to launch a surprise attack on the enemy. The plan was effective, and Kenobi succeeded in eliminating Grievous. However, the onset of the Great Jedi Purge was imminent, and Commander Cody received Order 66 from Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, who declared all Jedi guilty of treason. Cody followed the chancellor's orders by directing an AT-TE to fire upon their Jedi General, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Despite falling a great distance, Kenobi survived and evaded the probes dispatched by the clones to confirm his death.

Imperial Era

The occupation of Utapau

The 212th seized control of Utapau, subjugating its population while the Republic was reformed into the Galactic Empire.

The inhabitants of Utapau experienced a stark reversal during the Clone Wars with High-Altitude Entry Transport-221s and gunships supporting Cody's clone troopers as they arrested the Pau'ans they suddenly deemed enemies. Their liberation from Separatist control was replaced by another military occupation that began during the transition from the Galactic Republic to the Galactic Empire. After securing control of the planet, the 212th moved to arrest members of the Utapaun resistance along with Port Administrator Tion Medon.

The subjugation of Kashyyyk

The 212th was involved in the Empire's efforts to pacify and enslave the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk.

The 212th continued its service after the Clone Wars, functioning as an Imperial battalion within the Stormtrooper Corps under the command of General Kahdah. Around 19 BBY, Commander Cody and the 212th oversaw the pacification of Kashyyyk and the subsequent enslavement of the planet's Wookiee population. Shortly after the occupation, Cody deserted the Empire, questioning whether the Empire truly represented peace.

The battalion saw further action on Kashyyyk when the Wookiees attempted to overthrow the Imperial Military's occupation of their homeworld. Following the suppression of the Wookiee revolt, the actions of the 212th were reported in the HoloNet News by the journalist Alton Kastle, who claimed that Kahdah bravely led his battalion to victory over the Wookiees of Kashyyyk.

Legacy

Kenobi became a hunted fugitive after surviving the 212th Attack Battalion's unsuccessful execution of Order 66.

Despite Commander Cody's attempts to locate Kenobi after his failed assassination attempt, the clone troopers presumed the Jedi General dead after failing to find him on Utapau. The fall of the Jedi Order and the Empire's ascent to power forced the remaining Jedi into exile, including Kenobi, who was hunted by his former apprentice, the Sith Lord Darth Vader, and a group of Jedi hunters known as the Inquisitorius.

Behind the scenes

The "212th Legion" was the designation for the 212th Attack Battalion on the Databank entry for Commander Cody.
