Clone Lieutenant was a rank that several clone trooper officers possessed within the Republic Military throughout the duration of the Clone Wars. This rank maintained its usage into the initial stages of the Imperial Era, as clones populated the ranks of the nascent Stormtrooper Corps.
A Clone Lieutenant designated a clone trooper holding the lieutenant rank in the Grand Army of the Republic or the Galactic Republic Navy; both were components of the overarching Republic Military. Within the Grand Army, a Clone Lieutenant commanded a platoon consisting of thirty-six troopers while serving in the position of platoon leader. In turn, the four lieutenants within a company were under the command of their respective Clone Captain. Nevertheless, Clone Lieutenants were also capable of commanding smaller army units, such as a squad, and were integrated into the command structure of larger formations like a division. In fact, a Clone Lieutenant could take over command of an entire force if their superiors were incapacitated. Clone trooper pilots serving in the Republic Navy could also hold the rank of lieutenant. Furthermore, elite Advanced Recon Commandos and clone commandos were also eligible to hold this rank.

At the beginning of the Clone Wars, lieutenants wearing Phase I armored clone trooper armor displayed four blue circles on the left side of their breastplate, along with a blue stripe running down each arm, vertically along the center of the helmet, and laterally around the visor. Encouraged by the Jedi to add personal touches to their armor and cultivate their individual personalities, clone troopers, including the lieutenants, soon began customizing their equipment with unit-specific markings and unique designs. This practice persisted into the era of Phase II clone trooper armor. The Clone Lieutenant rank continued to exist into the Stormtrooper Corps during the early years of the Imperial Era.
Hawk, a lieutenant, functioned as a pilot within the 501st Legion. In this role, Hawk piloted a gunship during the Battle of Teth. Clone Lieutenant Thire served in the Coruscant Guard as a shock trooper. He accompanied Jedi Master Yoda to Rugosa with the goal of persuading King Katuunko to form an alliance with the Galactic Republic. Another clone lieutenant was named Trap. Trap was in command of the Tango Company on a mission to escort the Republic Pelta-class medical frigate TB-73 back to the Ord Cestus medical station. While en route to the station, fellow clone trooper Scythe became infected with a Geonosian brain worm, which led to the infection of all other clones present on board, including Trap.
Lieutenant Galle served under Jedi General Aayla Secura as part of the 327th Star Corps. When Order 66 was issued by Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, Galle, along with the other clones present, opened fire on Secura, ultimately killing her. The Clone Lieutenant rank remained in use during the early Imperial Era, a period in which clones were still extensively utilized within the Imperial Military. The commando known as Hilo held the rank of lieutenant.
