All Terrain Tactical Enforcer

The All Terrain Tactical Enforcer (AT-TE), which the Separatist Droid Army playfully called "six legs", functioned as a versatile military ground walker and tank. The Galactic Republic utilized it extensively during the Clone Wars. Sporting six legs, six laser cannon turrets distributed along its chassis, and a powerful projectile mass-driver cannon mounted on top, this walker served as a primary ground vehicle for the Grand Army of the Republic throughout the Clone Wars.

The Galactic Empire, which succeeded the Republic, continued to employ the AT-TE in large numbers during the initial stages of its reign. However, it was eventually superseded by newer walker designs by the time the Galactic Civil War erupted. Some AT-TEs even found their way into the hands of the Alliance to Restore the Republic.

The All Terrain Tactical Enforcer was designed as a vehicle with a low profile, using six articulated legs as its means of movement. The main structure was composed of two armored sections joined by a flexible, accordion-like segment (which also contained the walker's power generators). This design choice enhanced the walker's maneuverability on the battlefield. In essence, it was a mechanized counterpart to the arctic horny whelmer, a resilient species indigenous to Rothana. The walker's relatively short legs resulted in a slower maximum speed, but they also provided increased stability. As the name implies, the AT-TE was capable of navigating a wide array of planetary terrains, thanks to terrain sensors and tractor-field generators integrated into its footpads. It could not only ascend steep inclines, but it could also adhere to certain metallic surfaces by magnetizing its feet. Furthermore, the pressurized cabin allowed the walker to operate in the vacuum of realspace.

The AT-TE's most formidable armament was a single mass-driver cannon positioned on the dorsal surface. This weapon allowed the walker to function as both a mobile artillery platform and a tank. Besides shelling stationary targets, the mass driver could also be used to engage slow-flying aircraft and intercept incoming rocket projectiles. Although the mass-driver cannon had a limited rate of fire, it was supplemented by four smaller ball-turret laser cannons at the front and two at the rear, providing defense against infantry. The AT-TE excelled in combined arms operations with infantry, offering elevated covering fire while the forward ball-turret cannons effectively engaged battle droids. The hexapod's armor was capable of deflecting small arms fire, and its conductive properties dissipated heat from weapon impacts to minimize penetration. Additionally, the AT-TE possessed strong protection against electromagnetic pulse and ion weaponry. However, tanksmasher rockets could breach the armor, potentially crippling the vehicle's complex propulsion systems.

The crew consisted of a pilot and a spotter, located in the forward compartment; four gunners/support personnel, with two situated in both the forward and rear hull sections; and a turret gunner who operated the mass-driver cannon from an exposed position on top of the walker. The spotter utilized a rangefinder periscope to identify targets and direct the fire of the gunners, who controlled their weapons through targeting systems. The standard AT-TE variant could accommodate two squads, or 20 clone troopers, divided between the forward and rear sections. Acceleration compensators beneath the seats, along with seat restraints as a backup, helped keep the troopers secured during movement. Some versions also carried smaller All Terrain Reconnaissance Transports in the rear cargo area. Other variants featured a command center in the rear, typically used as a mobile command post. An onboard IM-6 medic droid provided medical assistance to the crew and passengers, attending to any injuries.

History

Clone Wars

AT-TEs made their debut at the First Battle of Geonosis.

The All Terrain Tactical Enforcer, manufactured by Rothana Heavy Engineering, became the primary battle tank for the Grand Army of the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars. The B1-series battle droids of the Separatist Droid Army began referring to the AT-TEs as "six legs." It saw action in numerous large-scale open battles, as well as smaller-scale operations. During the Battle of Teth, AT-TEs ascended a mountainside under enemy fire to rescue Rotta the Huttlet from Separatist forces.

During the Battle of Devaron, Jedi General [Anakin Skywalker](/article/anakin_skywalker], knowing that the walkers were pressurized and had magnetized feet, deployed two AT-TEs, ATAT300 and 773, onto bounty hunter Cad Bane's Munificent-class star frigate while it was in the vacuum of space. Admiral Wullf Yularen criticized Skywalker's plan when it was proposed, but Jedi Commander Ahsoka Tano and Clone Captain Rex understood his reasoning and praised his ingenuity. The operation was ultimately successful, although Skywalker and his team failed to recover the Jedi holocron they were tasked with retrieving.

AT-TEs remained in service throughout the Clone Wars. The success of the AT-TE also spurred the development of the All Terrain Heavy Enforcer. During the Conquest of Kaller, at least one AT-TE belonging to General Depa Billaba's clone force engaged a battalion of battle droids, but the walker was destroyed by fire from Armored Assault Tank Mk Is. Clone Commander Cody chose to use a blast from an AT-TE to execute Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi upon receiving Order 66, as it allowed him to attack Kenobi by surprise, before Kenobi realized the clones had turned against him. However, the blast only knocked Kenobi into water, allowing him to later escape to safety.

Age of the Empire

Imperial service

With the establishment of the Galactic Empire, and in accordance with the Imperial doctrine of uniformity, the Republic's AT-TEs had their burgundy-colored accents removed and were integrated into Imperial service. Several walkers were deployed on the Separatist capital of Raxus Secundus, where they assisted in enforcing the occupation effort led by Captain Bragg. During the occupation, AT-TEs were dispatched to quell protestors after Avi Singh, the remaining senator of the Separatist Senate, publicly opposed the Imperial occupation. Later, Clone Force 99 hijacked an AT-TE to rescue Singh and his droid GS-8. The squad destroyed several more AT-TEs as they made their escape from the city.

Around 18 BBY, numerous AT-TEs were stationed outside the Imperial Inspectorate HQ on Coruscant as three clone troopers were forcibly retired and escorted from the facility by Captain Bragg. Clone commando [Crosshair](/article/crosshair] observed the scene before departing for an off-world mission on Barton IV.

Following the liberation of Chorin City, which occurred several years before c. 13 BBY, an AT-TE participated in an Imperial parade through the streets of the city. The AT-TE carried Captain Tarl Sokoli, who had played a key role in the liberation of Chorin, and stopped at Sokoli's command to greet a young observer named Beilert Valance. Five years after the end of the Clone Wars, AT-TEs could be found on the junkyard planet Bracca, alongside other ships and Republic war machines from the conflict, where they were dismantled and their components were salvaged.

Days of Rebellion

An All Terrain Tactical Enforcer used by the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War.

Fifteen years after the conclusion of the Clone Wars, Captain Rex, along with Commanders Wolffe and Gregor, resided in a modified AT-TE on Seelos. They, together with the Lothal Rebels, later employed the tank to evade Imperial forces, which included three All Terrain Armored Transport walkers. The tank's mass driver cannon managed to destroy one AT-AT in the sandstorm before Rex ordered a direct assault on the remaining two while the Rebels escaped. The mass-driver cannon lacked the power to penetrate the AT-AT armor, except for the walkers' necks.

The AT-TE withstood multiple shots from both AT-ATs before Wolffe deliberately crashed it into one of the walkers. The cannon was temporarily disabled, but Gregor restored power when the rebels returned and hijacked one of the AT-ATs, allowing Rex to destroy the last walker by targeting its neck. The AT-TE was destroyed when the AT-AT collapsed on top of it. Subsequently, several AT-TEs were modified by Rebel Alliance mechanics for use as attack vehicles during the Galactic Civil War. Some were upgraded with thicker armor and more powerful weapons, becoming known as Elite AT-TEs. At least one AT-TE saw action in the Imperial defense of the Kuat Drive Yards.
