Alliance Army

The Alliance Army, also referred to as the rebel army, functioned as the military arm encompassing the ground forces of the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Individuals holding command positions within the Rebel army were identifiable by pips displaying green symbols. This organization was eventually superseded by the New Republic army.

History

In action

Serving as the ground-based military component of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, the Alliance Army was established by Mon Mothma in 2 BBY with the purpose of unifying diverse rebel factions and cells dispersed across the galaxy. In 0 BBY, General Davits Draven gave orders to multiple rebel ground units, which included a Special Forces marine platoon under the command of Lieutenant Taidu Sefla and the Pathfinders, to provide support for Operation Fracture depending on the situation on Jedha. Later, members of the Special Forces' Extraction Team Bravo carried out a rescue mission to free Jyn Erso from an Imperial prison located on Wobani. Soon after, rebel ground troops, under Erso's command as the "Rogue One" unit, rushed to the planet Scarif with the goal of stealing the Death Star plans. During the subsequent Battle of Scarif, the Alliance brought together the remainder of its forces to reinforce Rogue One both on the ground and with aerial support, marking its first significant triumph over the Empire. Shortly thereafter, rebel pilot Luke Skywalker successfully destroyed the Death Star during the Battle of Yavin.

Alliance Army personnel gathered on the planet Vrogas Vas in an attempt to capture or kill the Imperial enforcer and Sith Lord Darth Vader, who had crash-landed on the planet's surface after colliding with Skywalker. Vader engaged with members of the Vrogas Vas company. The rebel forces stationed on Vrogas Vas were reinforced by another battalion throughout the battle. The second platoon and Delta Squad also fought Vader. The battle concluded with an Imperial victory, as rebel forces were ultimately forced to retreat. At some point, the uprising on Molos was initiated by the newly created Molos army, who fought as rebel combatants in the following Battle of Molopolis.

During the Battle of Hoth in 3 ABY, rebel ground units, including the 61st Mobile Infantry also known as "Twilight Company," engaged with General Maximilian Veers' elite Blizzard Force. Rebel infantry, artillery, and snowspeeders fought in an attempt to defend Echo Base, but they were overwhelmed by Blizzard Force's AT-AT walkers. Twilight Company also participated in various campaigns of the Galactic Civil War, including the Mid Rim Retreat, Operation Ringbreaker, and the Siege of Inyusu Tor. During the Mid Rim Retreat, the Bitter Pill Company, Twenty-First company, and the aquatic Sixty-Eighth Infantry were sent on various diversionary missions against the Imperial Army.

Battle of Endor

During the Battle of Endor, General Han Solo commanded a strike team sent to Endor with the mission of deactivating the second Death Star's shield generator. Solo's team collaborated with local Ewok tribes, successfully storming the Imperial base and destroying the shield generator. This action shifted the battle's momentum against the Empire, ultimately leading to the deaths of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. On the morning following the Battle of Endor, General Solo led the Pathfinders in an attack on an Imperial outpost located on the far side of Endor. Despite the Pathfinders and their Ewok allies successfully eliminating the Imperial presence, Solo cautioned that the war was far from its end.

Wretch of Tayron

Solo later commanded the Pathfinders in a raid targeting an Imperial Security Bureau black site situated at the Wretch of Tayron. The raid resulted in the Alliance gaining access to intelligence regarding the Emperor's posthumous Operation: Cinder.

Legacy

In the months that followed the Battle of Endor, the Rebel army underwent a transformation into the New Republic's army as the Alliance implemented measures to reinstate the Republic.

Training

In theory, all Rebel soldiers received standardized training through the use of a field manual known as the White Book. According to the White Book, training should be divided into three or four phases. The initial two phases were identical for all soldiers, while the third phase offered two distinct paths: one for ground forces and another for space forces. The fourth phase was dedicated to training special forces.

However, in practice, only basic troops underwent the formal training outlined in the White Book. For example, in Twilight Company, training primarily consisted of demonstrating how to operate a blaster.

Alliance Special Forces training included a range of skills, such as using antique slugthrowers, disarming proximity mines, and rappelling from ray shields. According to Kryndal, approximately one-third of the personnel stationed at Echo Base had undergone Special Forces training.

For heavy weapons, the Alliance's army used the Heavy Soldier, the Cold-weather Heavy Soldier, the Heavy Desert Soldier, the Rebel Vanguard, the Quarren Heavy Gunner, the Sullustan Demolition, and the Special-weapons flamethrower. Vehicles and machinery

The rebel army's vehicles came from various sources. In addition to their own vehicles, the rebel army acquired vehicles that dated back to the Clone Wars from both the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The army also used stolen Imperial vehicles such as the All Terrain Anti Aircraft, All Terrain Armored Transport, the All Terrain Scout Transport, the All Terrain Defense Turret, and the TX-225 GAVw "Occupier" combat assault tank. Clone Wars-era vehicles included the Republic's All Terrain Tactical Enforcer, the All Terrain Reconnaissance Transport, the All Terrain Attack Pod, TX-130 Saber-class fighter tank, and the Confederacy's Armored Assault Tank, IG-227 Hailfire-class droid tank, the Multi-Troop Transport and the Umbaran mobile heavy cannon. In addition, the Clone Wars-era and Imperial vehicles were supplemented by the army's Arrow-23, Heavy Tracker, Freerunner, Ultra-Light Assault Vehicle, Juggernaut, Keelkana-class attack submersible, A-A5 Speeder Truck, T2-B Repulsor Tank, Enhanced T2-B Repulsor Tank, MLC-3 light tank, the Endor Forest Ranger, the 74-Z speeder bike, X-34 landspeeder, T-47 airspeeder, and the V-4X-D ski speeder.

Furthermore, the rebel army often modified vehicles to better suit their needs. Some of these modified vehicles included the Elite AT-TE, the Anti-Vehicle Skiff, the Cold-weather Hailfire Droid, and the Enhanced AT-AP Walker. The army also used stationary artillery weapons, such as the 1.4 FD P-Tower, the DF.9 turret placement, the V-232 artillery emplacement, the V-120 artillery emplacement, and the v-150 Planet Defender.

Weapons and equipment

The rebel army was well-supplied with a variety of infantry weapons such as blaster rifles, including the A280 blaster rifle, the A280C blaster rifle, the A-300 blaster rifle, the A280-CFE blaster, the A310 rifle, the DH-17 blaster rifle the E-5C, and sometimes the stolen E-11 medium blaster rifle. Members of the rebel army also used the DH-17 blaster pistol, the A180 pistol, the DLT-20A blaster rifle, the "Roba" M-45 repeating ion blaster, the Vulk TAU-6-23 "Blastmill" rotary blaster cannon, the Z-6 rotary blaster cannon, and the Mark II EWHB-10.

For heavy weapons, the rebel army used the PLX-1, the RPS-6 rocket launcher, the HH-12 rocket launcher, and the Smart Rocket.

The Alliance utilized rank insignia, but these were rarely seen in smaller cells or units, such as mobile infantry companies.
