X-34 landspeeder

The X-34 landspeeder, a civilian landspeeder model, was produced by the SoroSuub Corporation. It was available during the period of conflict known as the Galactic Civil War, which saw the Galactic Empire pitted against the Alliance to Restore the Republic.

Characteristics

An X-34 landspeeder equipped with a Mark II medium blaster

Designed as a common civilian vehicle, the X-34 landspeeder was manufactured by SoroSuub Corporation. Its design incorporated a robust repulsorlift engine, enhanced by a trio of air-cooled thrust turbines, allowing the X-34 to float approximately one meter above the surface. These vehicles were adept at navigating challenging landscapes and proved particularly effective in arid desert environments. Owners had the option of selecting either an open or enclosed [cockpit](/article/cockpit]; however, these speeders lacked any integrated offensive capabilities, such as weapon emplacements, or defensive features like armor. The X-34, while not particularly striking in appearance, offered considerable speed and had a length of 3.4 meters. X-34 landspeeders that were used by the Alliance to Restore the Republic were modified by adding blaster cannons, for example the Mark II Medium Blaster.

History

Luke Skywalker pilots his X-34 landspeeder through the Jundland Wastes

X-34 landspeeders served as civilian transports, ideally suited for traversing even the most uneven terrain with ease. Consequently, they were frequently employed in severe [desert](/article/desert] climates, and were in use on the planet Tatooine during the Imperial Era. Luke Skywalker, a farmboy, possessed an old and worn X-34, which he used extensively for transportation across the planet's deserts, resulting in a vehicle marked by sand erosion, faded paint from sun exposure, and a missing turbine cowling on the port side. Skywalker maintained the landspeeder in operational condition through diligent repairs and upkeep, which was crucial for survival in the desert conditions. Following the deaths of his aunt and uncle, Beru and Owen Lars, he sold the landspeeder in Mos Eisley for two thousand credits, using the money to contribute to the cost of transportation to the planet Alderaan. Around this time, the introduction of the XP-38 led to a decrease in the demand for X-34s, as the newer model became more popular. During the Galactic Civil War, the Alliance to Restore the Republic made use of X-34 landspeeders that had been upgraded with blaster cannons.

Behind the scenes

The X-34 landspeeder made its debut appearance in the movie Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. A full-scale physical model of the vehicle was constructed and utilized in Tunisia for the 1977 movie.
