The New Republic Army represented a component of the New Republic Defense Force, functioning as the ground-based military arm of the New Republic. Its origins lie in the ground forces of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, from which it was created following the establishment of the New Republic.
The Alliance Army served as the foundation for the formation of the New Republic Army. The Rebel SpecForces were repurposed as commandos with the objective of securing initial footholds during planetary assaults. The main body of the Army was intended for occupation duties and maintaining peace.
In 5 ABY, the Army achieved victory in an extended three-month battle on Milagro against the Imperial Army. In 6 ABY, under the leadership of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, General Rand Talor, and General Brenn Tantor, the army liberated Coruscant.
During Operation Shadow Hand, the New Republic Army endured substantial casualties in its engagements against the Dark Empire. Following the restructuring of the New Republic Defense Force after 12 ABY, the Army was disbanded. Its defensive responsibilities were reassigned to the Planetary Security Forces, while the New Republic Marines assumed the role of planetary assault specialists under the command of the naval battle groups as part of a fully-integrated Defense Force.
In 28 ABY, subsequent to the establishment of the Galactic Alliance, the Army was re-established as the Galactic Alliance Army.
The vehicle pool included combat speeders, attack tanks, T1-B hovertanks, T3-B heavy attack tanks, Hover Transport TC9s, Mobile Proton Torpedo Launchers, Tracked Mobile Bases, Scanner Jammers, and T-47 airspeeders.
