Wobani, a planet with a temperate climate, existed within the Mid Rim region of the galaxy. This world, situated in the Bryx sector inside the Wobani system, was characterized by a dense, swirling cloud of dust that partially obscured its surface. During the Imperial Era, the Galactic Empire utilized this planet as a location for both penal and forced labor facilities.
A significant cloud of space dust enshrouded Wobani, seldom allowing views of the planet's surface. Imperial Detention Center & Labor Camp LEG-817 was situated within the canyons of Wobani.
At the age of sixteen, Princess Leia Organa undertook a humanitarian mission to Wobani as part of her Challenge of the Heart, intending to deliver essential supplies to the inhabitants. Upon her arrival, she witnessed the appalling treatment of the local population and resolved to transport as many refugees as possible back to Alderaan. She successfully deceived Major Tedam, the Imperial officer in command of Wobani, by employing several Wobani citizens as crew members on her ship, thereby rescuing 100 refugees. These refugees were then transported to Alderaan, where they were given the option to reside there or on other planets, all at the expense of the royal family. However, unbeknownst to the princess at the time, her actions disrupted ongoing negotiations between her father, Bail Organa, Senator Mon Mothma, and other allies in the Imperial Senate aimed at resettling the Wobani population for months. As a result of the princess's intervention, the agreement fell apart because everyone with authority over Wobani felt humiliated, infuriated, and unwilling to negotiate further.
Wobani's conditions continued to worsen under Imperial control until the Empire chose to exclusively use the planet as a site for forced labor and prisoner confinement. Shortly before the stealing of the plans for the Death Star, Jyn Erso was incarcerated in an Imperial labor camp on Wobani for a period of six months. She was eventually broken out by Extraction Team Bravo from the Rebel Alliance.
The name "Wobani" is an anagram derived from Obi-Wan (Kenobi). Wobani made its initial appearance in the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which was released on December 16 of 2016.
