Juggernaut (Rebel Alliance)

Juggernauts were a type of ten-wheeled tank employed by the Alliance to Restore the Republic throughout the duration of the Galactic Civil War. These vehicles possessed a powerful laser cannon mounted on top, making them extremely resilient and capable of breaking through even the strongest defenses, such as shield generators. However, the Juggernaut's main weaknesses were its slow speed and vulnerability to attacks from rocket turrets and large groups of heavily armed infantry.

Characteristics

These tanks were large, and their color scheme consisted of gray, white, and orange. They utilized a suspension system to move on ten grooved wheels that were attached to the bottom of the vehicle.

Role

The primary function of Juggernauts was to breach heavily fortified positions. They could destroy shield generators, but their slow speed and vulnerability to rocket turrets and concentrated infantry fire made them susceptible to counter-attacks.

History

The Alliance to Restore the Republic made use of Juggernauts during the Galactic Civil War, a galaxy-wide conflict waged against the Galactic Empire. The Tatooine rebel cell utilized them extensively during the Battle for Tatooine.

Behind the scenes

The initial appearance of Juggernauts was in the Star Wars Legends game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, a real time strategy game from 2001 developed by Ensemble Studios and published by LucasArts. In that game, they were known as Rebel attack tanks. These vehicles were later established as canon with their inclusion in Star Wars: Commander, a mobile game released on August 21, 2014 by Disney Interactive.

Chris Menezes, who worked as a developer on Star Wars: Commander, said that the design of the Juggernaut in the mobile game was inspired by the HAVw A5 Juggernaut, in addition to working with the Lucasfilm Story Group. The vehicle's development explored how the Juggernaut would transition from the Clone Wars era to the Imperial Era and the Galactic Civil War. A concept artist then created the final design, excluding the weaponry. This design was then presented to the Story Group, who discussed the types of weapons the Rebel Alliance would use.
