Here we see the slicer DJ while he was an inmate on Cantonica.
A jail, also referenced as a detention block or prison, represented a location where people were incarcerated, spanning specialized buildings to entire planets. The majority of galactic governing bodies, such as the Galactic Republic, the Galactic Empire, and the New Republic, operated prisons to hold criminals, individuals who dissented politically, or those deemed too dangerous for society. Certain prisons functioned as factories where inmates performed labor during their sentences; these were known as work camps, penal work camps, or prison factories. Others, specifically designed for offenders of the most egregious crimes, were referred to as supermax prisons.
During the time of the High Republic Era, the Galactic Republic oversaw numerous prisons across the galaxy, notably the Republic Correctional Facility located on the planet Pipyyr, the Citadel situated on Lola Sayu, constructed in 522 BBY with assistance from the Jedi Order to confine rogue Jedi, and a detention center on the Starlight Beacon. Simultaneously, the Jedi Order maintained its own highly secure prison within the Jedi Temple on the capital planet Coruscant, employed to contain Sith and other adherents of the Dark-siders.
As the Clone Wars began, the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems factions at war expanded their pre-existing prison systems to hold newly captured adversaries. The Republic ran a prison specifically for high-ranking Separatist officers within the Republic Center for Military Operations, along with the high-security Republic Judiciary Central Detention Center, used to detain common criminals. The Jedi Order relinquished control of the Citadel, which was seized by the Separatists upon their conquest of Lola Sayu, but at some point during that era they established the Sason Temple which was used to contain a Starweird.
In addition to the newly acquired Citadel, the Confederacy of Independent Systems also managed the space station prisons Starlag XIX and Sunspot, the Unreal City, and a top-secret detention wing inside Dooku's Castle Serenno, used to imprison the Jedi Quinlan Vos.
After the Republic was reorganized into the Galactic Empire, the new government took over many of the Republic's former prisons, including the one at the Center for Military Operations and the Judiciary Detention Center. During the Rebellion era, there were a thousand Imperial prisons across the galaxy, including the Spire fortress on the planet Stygeon Prime and the Arrth-Eno Custodial Complex on the capital planet Coruscant. The Death Star had a detention block where Governor Wilhuff Tarkin kept Princess Leia Organa until she was rescued by Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Chewbacca. The Empire also operated a clandestine prison known as the Crypt located on the outer edges of the Anoat system.
The Empire also ran a large number of penal work camps, for instance, the labor camp located on the moon Narkina 5, the Delrian Prison Planet, the Oovo Four detention center—which was guarded by Firespray-31-class patrol and attack craft,—the Imperial Detention Center & Labor Camp LEG-817 and Jubilar. Prisons designed for those who committed Class One Offenses, the most serious under the Imperial Legal Code, were known as supermax facilities.
Following the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War, the victorious Alliance to Restore the Republic transformed into the New Republic and assumed control of numerous Imperial facilities, including the Delrian prison and Oovo Four. The New Republic also managed other facilities such as the Karthon Chop Fields.
The main jail on Cantonica was located at the Canto Bight police headquarters.
