Cantonica, a desert planet, resided in the Cantonica system. This system existed within the Corporate Sector, which itself was situated in the Outer Rim Territories of the galaxy. This world was most notably the location of Canto Bight, a city famed for its casino, attracting affluent tourists, avid gamblers, and those who profited from war. During the First Order-Resistance War in 34 ABY, Resistance members Finn, Rose Tico, alongside BB-8, journeyed to Cantonica. Their mission was to enlist the aid of the Master Codebreaker in order to neutralize the First Order's hyperspace tracker.
Found within the Outer Rim Territories of the galaxy, Cantonica, a desert planet in the Cantonica system inside the Corporate Sector, was the site of the casino city known as Canto Bight. A nebula displaying pink, blue, and green hues could be observed from the planet's surface. This city stood on the banks of the Sea of Cantonica, an artificial ocean regarded as the largest within the galaxy, which presented a peculiar dark-purple glow on the horizon as the sun set. The arid climate led to several tons of water evaporating each day, making the artificial sea's upkeep extremely expensive. Furthermore, its creation resulted in the lower areas of Canto Bight becoming humid and clammy, sometimes experiencing water seepage. In order to control the water level, sump pumps operated continuously near the coast.
Cantonica existed as a component of the Corporate Sector, a territory where corporate organizations possessed complete autonomy to govern. Previously, it was a tranquil, arid world marked by old cities and remnants of a forgotten civilization. The deserts evolved into a refuge for criminals seeking to evade detection or engage in illicit activities, featuring smugglers' shelters and discreet bars for crooks. Ultimately, the construction of the casino city, Canto Bight, occurred, turning the planet into an extravagant destination for the wealthy, and the artificial Sea of Cantonica seemingly materialized out of nowhere.
As the First Order-Resistance War began in 34 ABY, Canto Bight had become a safe haven for affluent tourists, gamblers, and war profiteers who traded weapons to both the First Order and the Resistance. Via a transport pod, Finn and Rose Tico, Resistance operatives, visited Canto Bight in an effort to enlist the Master Codebreaker to deactivate the hyperspace tracker of the First Order.
However, a traffic infraction resulted in the Canto Bight Police Department arresting Finn and Rose. They successfully persuaded DJ, a slicer, to assist them in exchange for his liberation while imprisoned. BB-8 played a role in the prisoners escaping the cell by tying up the guards. Subsequently, with the aid of Temiri Blagg, a stable hand who set free a group of fathiers, they managed to escape Canto Bight. Finn, Rose, BB-8, and DJ then made their escape aboard the stolen yacht known as the Libertine.
Based on the map found in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: Traveler's Guide to Batuu, Cantonica is situated within grid square R-5, as identified by Star Wars: The Force Awakens Beginner Game; however, this grid square is far from the Corporate Sector's location on the map. Jason Fry has suggested disregarding this placement. The Star Wars Galaxy Map positions Cantonica within the Corporate Sector at grid square S-4.
