The Canto Bight endeavor, alternatively known as the Cantonica assignment, was a mission executed by Resistance operatives Finn, Rose Tico, and the astromech droid BB-8. This took place amidst the First Order-Resistance's armed conflict. The primary objective was to locate the elusive Master Codebreaker, in order to infiltrate the First Order's flagship, the Supremacy, and thus rescue the embattled Resistance fleet. However, the trio's efforts led to their apprehension. During their subsequent escape, they forged an alliance with a slicer known as DJ.

As the Resistance fleet attempted to evade the pursuing First Order, the First Order, under the command of Supreme Leader Snoke aboard his massive Star Destroyer, the Supremacy, maintained their pursuit through hyperspace tracking. Vice Admiral [Amilyn Holdo], leading the Resistance forces, opted for strategic retreat rather than direct confrontation, a decision that sparked discontent in Captain Poe Dameron. Meanwhile, Finn, in an attempt to prevent Rey from returning to danger, tried to desert the Resistance. However, he was apprehended and imprisoned by Rose Tico, a maintenance worker. During their conversation, Finn revealed his ability to identify the tracking device on the Supremacy, inspiring him and Tico to devise a plan to disable it. They presented their plan to Dameron, who approved it. However, due to the Supremacy's heavy encryption, which was constantly changing, the trio reached out to Maz Kanata for assistance in bypassing it. Kanata, being occupied, directed them to a Master Codebreaker located on Canto Bight on the planet Cantonica, recognizable by a red palm bloom on his attire. Subsequently, Finn, Tico, and BB-8 departed the fleet aboard a Resistance transport pod, setting course for Canto Bight.
Upon arriving at Canto Bight, Finn, Tico, and BB-8 made an unplanned landing on a secluded beach. They then proceeded to infiltrate Canto Casino to search for the Master Codebreaker. Inside the casino, Finn and Tico witnessed fathier races, while BB-8 was mistaken for a lugjack slot machine by Dobbu Scay and filled with coins. Eventually, they located the Master Codebreaker, but before they could approach him, they were arrested by the Canto Bight Police Department for illegal landing and incarcerated.
While imprisoned, Finn and Tico encountered a man named DJ, who claimed to be a skilled codebreaker. Despite their initial reluctance, DJ managed to unlock all the prison cells. BB-8 then arrived at the prison, subduing the guards while they were engaged in a card game. Subsequently, BB-8 encountered DJ, and when confronted by a policeman, BB-8 used its stored coins to incapacitate him, earning DJ's admiration. Finn and Tico escaped through the sewers and found themselves in the fathier stables. There, they encountered children who cared for the fathiers, and Tico displayed the Resistance symbol on her ring, gaining their support. They released the fathiers and rode them through the city, trampling the police who attempted to stop them.

Pursued by law enforcement, Finn and Tico guided the fathiers onto the racetrack before leading them into the casino, causing widespread chaos as they destroyed property and gambling machines. After wreaking havoc in the casino, the fathiers emerged outside, where they were met by police ships. Finn and Tico led them through a narrow alley that led to the private beach, but before they could return to their transport pod, the police ships destroyed it. Forced to continue, the fathiers carried Finn and Tico up a cliff into a field of tall grass. The tall grass obscured them from the police, but as Finn and Tico separated from the herd, they reached the edge of the plateau, facing a steep drop into the ocean. They released their fathier to join the others, but found themselves trapped. However, the Yacht Libertine, piloted by DJ and BB-8 after they had stolen it, arrived to rescue them. Despite their reservations, Finn and Tico accepted DJ's offer of assistance and escaped from the planet.
En route to the Supremacy, DJ assured them of his ability to bypass the shields, facilitating their infiltration of the Star Dreadnought. However, he insisted on a precise agreement regarding his payment, despite Finn and Tico's assurances that the Resistance would compensate him generously. DJ requested Tico's Haysian ore medallion, which she agreed to give him. Finn attempted to retrieve it, but DJ looted the rest of the Libertine.
