Quinlan Vos

Quinlan Vos, a male Jedi Master of the Kiffar species, existed in the waning years of the Galactic Republic. Originating from the planet of Kiffu, he was considered a nonconformist within the Jedi Order, known for his tendency to disregard the rules. He was famous for his retrocognition—the ability to perceive memories by touching objects. This skill made Vos a highly skilled tracker. His missions often led him into the dangerous world of criminals. During one such mission, he encountered Aayla Secura and later accepted her as his Padawan.

During the Clone Wars, Ziro, a crime lord from the Hutt species, managed to escape from the Galactic Republic's capital on Coruscant. Vos joined forces with Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi to pursue and recapture him. They discovered that Cad Bane, a bounty hunter, had freed Ziro. Vos and Kenobi followed their trail to Nal Hutta, the homeworld of the Hutts, and then to Teth. There, they found Ziro had been murdered and their attempt to apprehend Bane was unsuccessful.

Later in the conflict, Vos formed an alliance with Asajj Ventress, a former assassin who had embraced the dark side. The pair's attempt to assassinate Count Dooku, a Sith Lord and the ruthless leader of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, failed. In an effort to uncover the identity of Darth Sidious, Dooku's master, Vos succumbed to the dark side and became Dooku's apprentice, serving the Confederacy as Admiral Enigma. However, his love for Ventress ultimately led him back to the light side of the Force.

In the war's final stages, the Jedi General participated in the Outer Rim Sieges, including the battle for Saleucami, and subsequently deployed his Republic forces to Boz Pity. Following the fall of the Jedi Order, Vos survived the Great Jedi Purge along with his new love interest, Khaleen Hentz, becoming one of the Jedi the Galactic Empire believed had survived and actively hunted. Ten years into the Empire's reign, Vos aided the Hidden Path, an underground resistance network that helped Jedi and Force-sensitive individuals escape persecution through Jabiim and establish new identities.

Biography

Early life and Jedi service

Vos during his mission in Mos Espa—as Anakin Skywalker passes by.

Quinlan Vos was born on the planet of Kiffu in the years leading up to the demise of the Galactic Republic. He became a part of the Jedi Order, serving as an apprentice to Jedi Master Tholme. Despite not being born within the walls of the Jedi Temple, he considered it his true home, as it was where he matured. He engaged in both starting and ending conflicts within its training rooms, and even in areas not intended for combat. He also enjoyed taking clandestine naps within the Temple's library. Vos eventually attained the rank of Jedi Knight and subsequently that of a Jedi Master. Vos became known as a rebel, often disregarding the established rules of Jedi life. However, he gained considerable recognition for his ability to experience the memories of others by making contact with objects they had previously touched. This unique talent allowed him to excel as a tracker, which led him to frequently accept missions involving the criminal underworld.

During one of these missions, Vos crossed paths with Aayla Secura, a Twi'lek who possessed a sensitivity to the powers of the Force. During the mission, Vos saved Secura from a perilous situation on her homeworld of Ryloth. The unconventional Jedi Master took Secura as his Padawan, and the two developed a strong bond. Under Vos's guidance, Secura later achieved the rank of Jedi Knight.

At some point, Vos killed Zalem, the Clan Mother of the Nightsister.

In 32 BBY, Vos found himself on a mission in Mos Espa, a spaceport settlement located on the desert planet of Tatooine. Coincidentally, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, were also present on Tatooine. The two Jedi chose to land their vessel, carrying Queen Padmé Amidala of Naboo, on Tatooine after it sustained damage while escaping the Trade Federation's blockade of Naboo. Vos was there to witness one of the first encounters between Jinn and Anakin Skywalker, a young slave from Mos Espa whom Jinn would soon believe to be the Chosen One destined to restore balance to the Force.

During his time as a Jedi, Vos served as the Order's liaison with local law enforcement. He showed respect for the police, openly sharing information and visiting local "cop cantinas." Tanivos Exantor Divo, an Inspector with the Coruscant Security Force, praised Vos's efforts.

The Clone Wars

Early activities

In 22 BBY, the Clone Wars between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems began with the First Battle of Geonosis, leading Vos to provide the Republic with his data on organized crime in the Coruscant underworld. Early in the war, the Purse World of Cato Neimoidia was struck by an explosion in the Cadesura district of its capital city, Zarra, an event known as the Cadesura disaster. Shortly after the incident, Kenobi, who had recently been promoted to Jedi Master, saw Vos packing spare parts into his starfighter on Coruscant, preparing for launch. Vos winked at Kenobi and closed the equipment hatch.

In the same year, Vos's former master, Tholme, was assigned to participate in a battle against the Separatists by the Jedi High Council. Although Vos wished to join him, he was assigned to a different mission. During the battle, Tholme engaged in a lightsaber_duel with Asajj Ventress, a Sith apprentice and agent of the Confederate leader, Sith Lord Count Dooku. The duel resulted in Tholme's death, enraging Vos upon learning of his master's demise.

The hunt for Ziro

As the Republic's conflict with the Confederacy continued, Ziro the Hutt, a crime lord, was imprisoned by the Republic in the Republic Judiciary Central Detention Center on the capital planet of Coruscant. Ziro's crime was conspiring with Dooku to kidnap Rotta, the infant son of Ziro's nephew, Jabba the Hutt. The plot aimed to implicate the Jedi Order in the kidnapping and intended death of the Huttlet, thereby convincing the Hutt Clan to join the Separatist cause. In 21 BBY, the Hutt Clan paid Cad Bane, a bounty hunter, to break Ziro out of prison. The goal was for the Hutts to imprison Ziro themselves to prevent him from revealing damaging information about the Grand Hutt Council to the Republic.

On Coruscant, Vos and Kenobi discuss their mission to find Ziro.

To return Ziro to Republic custody, the Jedi Council tasked Vos and Kenobi with tracking down and capturing the Hutt criminal. Before embarking on their mission, Vos met with Kenobi and Commander Cody, a clone trooper in the Grand Army of the Republic, at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Kenobi suspected Jabba was behind the escape, seeking revenge for his son's kidnapping, but Vos had information indicating the Hutt Council's involvement due to Ziro's incriminating knowledge. The two Jedi departed Coruscant for Nal Hutta, the Hutt homeworld, where Vos believed Ziro had been taken.

Upon arriving on Nal Hutta, Vos and Kenobi landed at the palace of Gardulla the Hutt, where Ziro was being held, and were brought before the Grand Hutt Council. Vos confronted the Council with the theory that they had orchestrated Ziro's escape from prison, an accusation the Hutts denied despite its truth. While the Hutts spoke with Kenobi, assuring them of their peaceful intentions, Vos picked up a glass used by Ziro and sensed his memories, confirming the Hutt's presence in the palace. Vos shared his discovery with Kenobi as they left the Council chambers and entered the prison, where they soon found that Ziro had escaped.

Vos uses his psychometric tracking skills while searching for Ziro on Nal Hutta.

Utilizing Vos's tracking expertise, Vos and Kenobi ventured through the swamps of Nal Hutta in pursuit of Ziro and his lover, Sy Snootles, a musician who had aided his escape. Unbeknownst to Ziro and the Jedi, Sy Snootles was being paid by Jabba to deliver Ziro's diary containing damaging information to him. Kenobi questioned why Ziro remained on Nal Hutta, suggesting he might have left the planet, but Vos sensed Ziro's continued presence on the Hutt homeworld. During their search, Kenobi was attacked by a dragonsnake, a formidable creature inhabiting the swamps. The Jedi Master killed the large carnivore, prompting Vos to remark that Kenobi was wasting valuable time in the hunt for the escaped Hutt. The trail led the Jedi, who discovered that Cad Bane was also searching for Ziro, towards the home of Ziro's mother, Mama. Vos and Kenobi learned that Ziro had stolen Mama's starship and that Bane had arrived shortly after, forcing her to reveal what she knew about her son's activities. Kenobi assured her that they did not intend to kill Ziro, and she disclosed that Ziro was heading to the jungle planet Teth, where he had hidden his diary.

Upon arriving on Teth, the Jedi found Bane standing over Ziro's lifeless body. When confronted, the bounty hunter maintained that he was not responsible for the murder. Bane attempted to leave, but Kenobi and Vos engaged him in combat to apprehend him for his crimes against the Republic, including holding the Galactic Senate hostage as part of his plot to free Ziro. This led to a fight between the Jedi and Bane, with Bane proving a formidable opponent. The Jedi pursued Bane across the rocky terrain, and at one point, the bounty hunter managed to seize Vos's lightsaber and wield it against Kenobi. Bane grabbed Kenobi's arm during the fight and electrocuted him, but Vos swiftly rescued Kenobi, using the Force to propel himself towards Bane, who was using jet boots, and engaged him in mid-air combat. The bounty hunter evaded the Jedi Knight and, despite Vos and Kenobi's efforts, escaped from Teth aboard his ship. Their mission to recover Ziro and capture Bane ended in failure.

Yoda's vision

Vos, along with many other Jedi, appears in Yoda's vision of an idyllic Jedi Order.

Later in the war, Grand Master Yoda embarked on a quest to unlock the secrets of immortality, seeking to retain his consciousness after death. This quest led him to a mysterious planet, the origin of all life. He underwent a series of trials administered by five Force Priestesses, who assessed his worthiness to receive their secrets. During these trials, Yoda experienced a vision of an idyllic Jedi Order, one untainted by the ravages of war. Among the many Jedi present in this peaceful vision was Vos, engaged in conversation with Jedi Master Saesee Tiin. The vision dissipated when Yoda recalled that it was merely an illusion conjured on the Force planet.

Mission to Bavana

Vos & Bane fighting on Bavana.

At some point between 20 BBY and 19 BBY, Vos traveled to Bavana to retrieve Graygon Eckt, a former employee of Count Dooku who had betrayed him. There, he engaged in combat with Kwarg and Nonk, eventually scaring them away. Vos successfully persuaded Eckt to accompany him. However, Cad Bane confronted Vos and Eckt, seeking to capture Eckt and obtain his intelligence. Vos utilized Bane's gauntlets to knock him unconscious. Nevertheless, Bane summoned other bounty hunters to assist him in locating Eckt and some of Dooku's family's treasure.

Vos then commandeered a speeder and retrieved Eckt. Initially, Vos advised Eckt to relinquish the treasure to Bane and his fellow hunters. However, Eckt had concealed Dooku's secret communications within the treasure. At the smelter, Vos threw the chest onto a conveyor belt to distract the hunters. Vos was then confronted by Bane, who desired Eckt more than the treasure. Vos and Eckt managed to escape Bane aboard a ship. There, Vos discovered a Wookiee doll and successfully traded a goblet for it.

Successful partnership

Some time later, Vos was working undercover at Otor's Hub. Disguised as "Master Tal", Vos was tracking Sheb Valaad, a Koorivar merchant who specialized in selling the ill-gotten works and objects of deceased individuals; some of whom he had arranged to be murdered. Vos's mission was interrupted by the arrival of the Mahran Jedi Knight Akar-Deshu, nicknamed "Desh", who had been sent by the Jedi Council to fetch Vos for a new mission. After dispatching Sheb and his henchmen, the two Jedi traveled back to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.

Upon arriving back on Coruscant, Vos learned that he had been assigned on a secret mission to assassinate Count Dooku. The Jedi Council had been spurred into action by Dooku's genocidal attack on the Mahran homeworld of Mahranee. Seeking to prevent the further loss of lives, the Council had decided to kill Dooku in order to bring an end the Clone Wars. Vos accepted the mission but insisted on having a partner accompany him. After some discussion, Master Yoda recommended that he team up with Asajj Ventress, a bounty hunter who had once been Dooku's dark side acolyte and assassin; before Dooku cast her aside on the orders of Darth Sidious, the Dark Lord of the Sith. The alliance between Vos and Ventress, forged by the Jedi Council, was designed to bring both the light side and dark side together to kill the Count of Serenno, although the Council did not want Ventress to know she was aiding the Jedi.

Vos's first challenge was to locate Ventress. He did this by traveling to Level 1313 of Coruscant in order to get information as to her location. While there he spoke with the bounty hunter Boba Fett in a bar who hinted that his former partner was hunting a Volpai named Moregi on Pantora. Traveling to Pantora, Vos joined forces with Ventress to capture the Volpai fugitive. After a series of conflicts and misunderstandings, Vos managed to win Ventress over by using his psychometric powers to find Moregi's home. Having captured Moregi, Ventress, believing Vos to be a competent if irritating bounty hunter, agreed to form a partnership.

Pantora, where Vos and Ventress met.

The two spent several weeks aboard Ventress's ship, the Banshee, training and conducting missions. During a mission on Coruscant's Level 1313, Vos on one occasion saved Ventress' life by using the Force to knock a blaster out a Weequay thug's hand. On their fifth hunt, Vos and Ventress worked together to capture the estranged former first mate of the Blood Bone Order's captain Lassa Rhayme. At Quinlan's suggestion, Ventress managed to bait the fugitive using her feminine charms. As part of their payment, Rhayme gave them a bottle of Tevraki whiskey, which the two hunters enjoyed together. While drinking, Vos questioned Ventress about her training but she remained tight-lipped. The two hunters also began to develop feelings for each other that went beyond their business partnership.

When Ventress made a business trip to Coruscant's Level 1313 to make modifications to the Banshee, Quinlan took the opportunity to update Master Kenobi about the progress of his mission. Since Vos had established a rapport with Ventress, Kenobi urged his fellow Jedi to find a way to motivate her against Dooku. Vos later learned that Ventress had accepted a new job from the Pyke Syndicate, a drug and spice cartel that was based on the rocky planet Oba Diah. The Pyke Syndicate boss Marg Krim's wife Tezzka Krim and their two children Laalee and Vram had been kidnapped by the Black Sun crime syndicate and were being held hostage on the volcanic planet Mustafar. Marg tasked the two hunters with rescuing his family.

Traveling together to Mustafar, Vos and Ventress rented two lava fleas and visited a bar called The Last Resort. There, they accosted a Falleen Black Sun guard and forced him to divulge information about the Pyke hostages. Using this information, Vos and Ventress infiltrated the Black Sun fortress through an exposed balcony outcropping. Despite rescuing Laalee and Vram, they were unable to find Tezzka. Pursued by the Black Sun sentries, the two hunters and the children headed back to their lava flea mounts, which were separated by a high cliff. While Ventress with Laalee managed to jump safely onto their lava flea, a blaster bolt hit Quinlan's back; causing Vram to lose his grip and fall into the lava flow. However, Vos used his Force powers to lift the boy to safety before he could touch the lava flow.

Vos at the time of his partnership with Ventress

After returning to the Banshee, the two bounty hunters formulated a plan to rescue Tezzka while Ventress treated Vos's wounds. Using his psychometric powers, Vos touched Laalee's locket and discovered that her mother Tezzka was still being held in the fortress. While Ventress entered the fortress disguised as a Pyke Syndicate negotiator, Vos managed to free Tezzka from her cell. Together with Tezzka, Vos rejoined Ventress in the Black Sun leader Ziton Moj's throne room where the two hunters assaulted Moj and his men. Having accomplished their mission, the two hunters and Krim's family returned to Oba Diah on the Banshee. During their journey, Vos and Ventress managed to befriend the two children, who regarded the hunters as their rescuers.

Upon returning to Oba Diah, Marg Krim rewarded Ventress with double the pay. As they departed the planet, the two hunters witnessed a fleet of Black Sun starfighters and Interceptor-class frigates exiting hyperspace above the planet. Black Sun had come to settle scores with the Pyke Syndicate in retaliation for the Mustafar rescue. Despite knowing that the Pikes would not stand a chance, Vos wanted to help. However, Ventress knew that they were outnumbered by the Black Sun fleet and took the Banshee into hyperspace.

Quinlan Vos partnered himself with the former Sith Acolyte Asajj Ventress to defeat Count Dooku, but the two eventually became lovers.

Following the debacle of their failed assignment, Vos confessed to Ventress his Jedi affiliation, a truth she had already deduced. She had observed his unusual fighting skills and his incredible ability to survive deadly situations, which she interpreted as signs of his connection to the Force. With nothing left to conceal, Vos finally revealed his true identity and his objective: to assassinate Count Dooku. Having developed respect for Vos, and recognizing a chance to finally avenge herself on her former master, Ventress consented to assist him. However, she asserted that Dooku's assassination would only be achievable with the power of the dark side.

Vos seized an opportunity to journey to Coruscant, where he encountered Master Kenobi in the infamous Level 1313 cantina. Vos informed Kenobi that Ventress knew he was a Jedi and was prepared to aid in Dooku's assassination, mentioning that Ventress had Separatist contacts who knew Dooku's location. Despite Vos's assertion that he trusted the Dathomiri bounty hunter, Kenobi cautioned his Jedi colleague against trusting Ventress, citing her manipulative nature. Vos countered by stating that she had been loyal to him thus far.

Ventress escorted Vos to her former home planet, Dathomir, a world saturated in the dark side, to guide his training. After landing the Banshee, Ventress led Vos to the location of the Nightsisters massacre that General Grievous had perpetrated the previous year under Count Dooku's orders. Vos also learned about Ventress's past and her desire to avenge the deaths of her fellow Nightsisters at Dooku's hands. When Vos touched one of the fallen Nightsisters' energy bows, he experienced a psychometric vision of the Nightsisters massacre and understood Ventress's pain. Despite his feelings for Ventress, Vos still adhered to the Jedi principle of avoiding anger. Aware of this, Ventress attempted to persuade her apprentice to embrace his hatred, arguing that Jedi doctrine would not lead to Dooku's downfall.

During their time on Dathomir, Ventress urged the Jedi Master to harness his emotions to strengthen his connection to the dark side. In Vos's presence, she summoned a snake to crawl over her body before using a dark side-fueled Force choke to crush its windpipe. When Vos drew a parallel between Ventress's struggle with the death of her Master Ky Narec and his Master Tholme, Ventress claimed that Dooku had murdered his master to fuel his anger towards the Count and the Jedi Council for withholding that information. In reality, Ventress had murdered Tholme under Count Dooku's orders. Succumbing to his emotions and attraction to Ventress, Vos embraced his partner–turned–teacher, signaling his rejection of the Jedi doctrine of non-attachment.

Asajj Ventress at the time of her partnership with Vos

After gathering and burying the remains of the fallen Nightsisters, Vos and Ventress established a camp far from the Nightsisters' village. As part of his dark side training, Ventress subjected Vos to frequent climbs to enhance his strength and agility, hunting expeditions to acclimate him to killing, and extended runs to build his endurance. As his training advanced, Ventress prompted Vos to attempt to entice a snake to coil around him before killing it with the power of the dark side. However, Vos hesitated and lost control of the snake, which injected him with a potent hallucinogenic venom, causing him intense pain.

The following morning, Vos had hardly recovered from his injuries when Ventress initiated a lightsaber duel with him around the camp and the adjacent forest. During the duel, Vos yielded to his anger. Satisfied with her apprentice's progress, Ventress determined that it was time to instruct him in the ritualistic access to the dark side mastered by the Nightsisters. She also informed Vos about a Nightsister coming-of-age ritual that involved killing and harvesting the body parts of the Sleeper, a large crustacean creature inhabiting a series of pools near the Nightsisters' village. To prepare for this trial, Vos had to train underwater in the oceans of Dathomir without any breathing equipment or visual aids.

As his training progressed, Vos also continued his romantic involvement with his teacher and partner. While sharing burra fish stew, Ventress inquired about their plans after they had killed Dooku. Quinlan stated that he would not be returning to the Jedi Order after their mission was complete. Shortly thereafter, they were contacted by Ventress's informant, the Gossam Sumdin, who informed her that Dooku was planning to visit Raxus Secundus soon. Before the duo proceeded with their mission, Ventress assigned Vos his final trial: the murder of the Sleeper. Despite some initial hesitation, Vos succeeded in killing the Sleeper by crushing it with the power of the dark side while visualizing the creature as Count Dooku. After committing the act, Vos affirmed his love for Ventress and destroyed his comlink, his only connection to the Jedi. Together, the duo then proceeded with their mission to kill Dooku.

Vos and Ventress traveled to Raxus to assassinate Count Dooku.

Having finished his training, Quinlan Vos and Asajj Ventress finally embarked on their mission. They traveled to the Confederate capital, Raxus, where they met Ventress's secret contact, Sumdin, in Raxus's capital, Raxulon. Vos was appalled when Ventress murdered Sumdin with her lightsaber. In response to Quinlan's objections, Asajj argued that he could not allow compassion or loose ends to prevent him from completing their mission. Vos accepted Ventress's reasoning and channeled his anger to fuel the mission ahead. The two would-be assassins planned to ambush Dooku at a formal gathering in Raxulon. The Confederacy was bestowing the Raxian Humanitarian Award on Count Dooku, who would also deliver a patriotic speech to boost morale among the local population.

Following the speech, the two assassins formulated a plan to confront the Count in private. While Ventress contacted Dooku and requested a private meeting at the overlook, Vos ambushed General Grievous and his battle droids to prevent them from assisting Dooku. Vos seized two lightsabers from Grievous and severed one of the cyborg's hands before being overpowered, but he managed to escape. After trapping Grievous in a chamber, Vos proceeded to join Ventress in carrying out their mission. The two assassins engaged the Separatist leader in a lightsaber duel but were unable to match Dooku's mastery of the dark side. During the fight, Dooku incapacitated Asajj by throwing her against a wall. While dueling with the Sith Lord, Dooku attempted to create dissension between Vos and Ventress by claiming that he would be a superior teacher to Ventress.

Ultimately, Dooku managed to overpower Vos and disarm him. Shortly thereafter, General Grievous arrived with battle droid reinforcements and forced Ventress to retreat. Defeated and having failed his mission, Vos attempted to provoke the Count into killing him. However, Dooku had other plans for his Jedi captive and instead knocked him unconscious with Force lightning. The last thing Vos saw before losing consciousness was Ventress fleeing Dooku's battle droids, leaving him in Dooku's captivity.

Vos was imprisoned and tortured at Dooku's palace on Serenno.

After Quinlan Vos was captured, he was subjected to prolonged torture and psychological manipulation in the prison level of Dooku's palace on Serenno. Sensing the growing darkness within him, the Sith Lord sought to mold Vos into his latest apprentice and a weapon against the Jedi. Vos initially resisted his captor until Dooku revealed that Ventress was responsible for the death of his former master, Tholme. Quinlan initially doubted Dooku's claim until the Count presented him with Tholme's lightsaber. Using his psychometric abilities, Vos confirmed that Dooku had been truthful. With his trust in his former lover shattered, Vos succumbed to the dark side and agreed to become Dooku's apprentice.

Despite aligning himself with Count Dooku and the Separatists, Vos secretly intended to use Dooku to reach his mysterious master, Darth Sidious, and eliminate the Sith once and for all. Meanwhile, Ventress launched a desperate rescue mission to Serenno with the assistance of her former bounty hunting allies. While the bounty hunters distracted Dooku's droid sentries, and even Dooku himself, Ventress infiltrated Dooku's prison and located Vos's cell. However, Vos, overwhelmed by Dooku's mind games and his hatred for Ventress, attacked his would-be rescuer, revealing himself as an agent of the dark side. Heartbroken, Ventress was forced to leave Serenno empty-handed.

Now Dooku's servant and consumed by the dark side, Vos began a new life as the deadly Separatist agent known throughout the galaxy as 'Admiral Enigma'. For several months, Vos utilized his knowledge of the Republic military to orchestrate a series of victories, quickly becoming one of the Confederacy's most feared operatives. Recognizing that the Jedi Order would soon uncover the truth about Enigma's identity, Vos and his new master devised a plan. As expected, the Jedi Order, in collaboration with Ventress, launched a mission to capture Enigma and hopefully rescue Vos. After battling Dooku, the strike team discovered the former Jedi battered and broken in a prison cell aboard Enigma's flagship. While rescuing Vos, Asajj saw his eyes flash brightly and realized that he had embraced the dark side. Despite Ventress's protests, Vos's former Jedi allies believed his deception and welcomed him back to the Order.

Vos sabotaged a Republic military operation on Vanqor.

However, Vos's swift reintegration into the Jedi Order was merely a means to an end. To demonstrate his loyalty to Dooku, Vos sabotaged a Jedi operation to recover supplies, including medications, weapons, ship-repair parts, and foodstuffs, stored in a Separatist supply storage base. Vos planted several Republic-issue bombs in the asteroid base before the Jedi and Republic could salvage the supplies, effectively denying them to the Republic's people and war effort. Later, Vos leaked intelligence about a joint Republic-Jedi military operation against a Separatist listening post on Vanqor to Dooku. This allowed the Separatists to evacuate the base before Republic forces arrived.

While Vos feigned shock and ignorance at the failure of these operations, several of his Jedi colleagues, particularly Master Windu, suspected that he was secretly working for Dooku. After some deliberation among the Jedi Council, Master Yoda ultimately determined that Vos had indeed fallen after interacting with the former Jedi personally. As a final test of faith, the Jedi Council once again tasked Vos with assassinating Dooku. Vos, seeing this as an opportunity to defeat Darth Tyranus and uncover the identity of his mysterious master, Darth Sidious, accepted the mission. Before embarking on the mission, Vos took the opportunity to reconcile with Ventress, asking her to secretly follow him.

Unbeknownst to him, the Jedi Order, anticipating deception, dispatched Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Vos's Mahran friend, Desh, to trail him aboard Dooku's dreadnought. After infiltrating the Separatist warship, Vos quickly defeated Dooku and demanded an audience with Darth Sidious, before both Sith were promptly captured by the Jedi. Vos attempted to assert his innocence but was ignored by Kenobi, who felt betrayed by his friend. Kenobi and Skywalker brought Vos and Dooku aboard the Venator-class Star Destroyer Vigilance, where they were surrounded by two dozen armed clone troopers led by Commander Cody. While being escorted to the ship's brig, Vos was confronted by his old friend Desh, who was hurt by his betrayal.

Under the guise of wanting to speak with Desh, Vos lured his former friend closer and then used the Force to levitate his lightsaber. Vos then used Desh's lightsaber to break Dooku's bonds, and the two dark siders attacked their clone and Jedi captors. Vos engaged in a lightsaber duel with Desh while probing his thoughts. Vos quickly realized that the Mahran intended to sacrifice his own life to kill Vos by breaking his wrist to release venom from his stinger into Desh's bloodstream. Vos managed to evade Desh's stinger and hurled him directly at Kav Bayons, killing the other Jedi Knight. As Desh succumbed to his own poison, Vos spared his former friend the agony of a painful death by killing him with Desh's own lightsaber.

Vos along with Ventress and Dooku crash-landed on Christophsis' crystalline surface.

After meeting up with a horrified Ventress in the ship's hangar, Vos and Dooku fled aboard the Banshee and attempted to reach Dooku's dreadnought. However, they were shot down by the Vigilance and crash-landed on Christophsis. Vos and his companions survived the crash but sustained various injuries. Pursued by Republic forces, a wounded Dooku guided both Vos and Ventress to a Separatist stronghold. On the way, Ventress questioned Vos about his alliance with Dooku. Vos tried to reassure her that he had a plan and told her to trust him. As promised, Dooku attempted to provide Vos with an audience with his master, but the conversation was interrupted by an assault launched by the Republic military.

After an artillery blast wounded Ventress, Dooku seized the opportunity to eliminate both of his former apprentices in one swift move. However, feeling the Living Force flowing throughout her entire being, Ventress dove in front of a lethal blast of Dooku's force lightning, saving her lover and seemingly sacrificing herself. Enraged and devastated by her sacrifice, Vos incapacitated Dooku in a fit of passion and, as he prepared to deliver the killing blow, experienced a moment of clarity and spared the Sith Lord's life. Ventress's return to the light side had made Vos realize the grave error of his descent into darkness. She reassured Vos that redemption was still within his reach, even if late.

Dooku ultimately escaped in the chaos of the battle, but Obi-Wan Kenobi witnessed Vos's act of mercy. Following the battle, Vos was taken into custody and imprisoned in the Vigilance's brig. Heartbroken by the apparent death of his lover, Vos did not resist his Jedi and Republic captors. During a hearing before the Jedi Council, Vos confessed that he had fallen to the dark side as part of his plan to uncover the identity of Dooku's secret Sith master, Darth Sidious. Believing that the Jedi's decision to resort to assassination was a moral failing, Kenobi advocated for Vos's reinstatement in the Jedi Order, which the Council granted, although Vos was placed under surveillance until he could regain their trust. Kenobi and Vos held a funeral for Ventress on Dathomir, where Vos buried her in the traditional manner of her people. As Ventress's body was lowered into the waters of Dathomir, Vos heard a voice welcoming Ventress.

Final battles

After Vos's return to the light side, he became a general in the Republic Army, working alongside Commander "Faie" despite their strained relationship. Following the fall of the planet Saleucami, Vos relocated his troops to Boz Pity, where they achieved victory. Due to the rapid pace of the Outer Rim Sieges, Vos then joined the fight on Kashyyyk, strategizing alongside the Wookiee Chieftain Tarfful, ultimately collaborating with Yoda and Luminara Unduli, his fellow generals, and Chewbacca, another Wookiee, to plan the defense of their world and repel the invaders. At one point, Vos was aboard an Oevvaor Jet Catamaran with several Wookiees. Vos and his troops fought extensively in the brutal campaign to defend the Wookiee homeworld.

Surviving Order 66

During the Battle of Kashyyyk, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine—secretly Darth Sidious—transformed the Republic into the Galactic Empire, the Jedi Order was decimated through Order 66, and the Clone Wars concluded. In the aftermath of the "Jedi insurrection," the fabricated narrative that legitimized Order 66 and the Great Jedi Purge for the Republic, Commander Faie and the clones pledged allegiance to the new Empire and began hunting down Vos. During the search, the troops prepared to destroy a Wookiee village, prompting Vos to intervene. Despite being wounded, he struck down Faie and subsequently escaped Order 66 and the Empire with his new lover, Khaleen Hentz. Meanwhile, Vos was presumed dead by the Coruscant Security Force. Vos was allegedly implicated in the insurrection, although CSF Inspector Divo remained silent on whether Vos was dead or alive.

Vos was among the Jedi who survived Order 66.

Sometime after Order 66, Vos was listed as a high-priority target for the Inquisitors of the presumed survivors of the new Galactic Emperor's Jedi purge. During the invasion of Mon Cala, Jedi Padawan Ferren Barr and Verla, his informal apprentice, escaped a skirmish in Bel City with a trio of Inquisitors. As they parted ways after their escape, Barr instructed Verla to seek out another surviving Jedi to help train her, listing Vos among the possible survivors she could contact, as no death records for him existed.

Shortly after the Battle of Fortress Vader, Darth Vader entered a portal constructed by Darth Momin to resurrect his wife Padmé Amidala. While traversing visions, he encountered Vos along with numerous Jedi, their lightsabers drawn, ready to confront him. However, Vader killed all the illusions, bisecting Vos as he lunged towards him after killing Plo Koon and Shaak Ti, while the words "Let the past die" echoed in his mind.

Vos was helped by Hidden Path who gave him a new identity.

By 9 BBY, Vos had received assistance from an underground movement that smuggled surviving Jedi across the galaxy, providing them with new identities. He continued to aid the group on occasion and primarily focused on safely relocating Force-sensitive younglings away from the Empire. As a testament to his collaboration, his name was etched in Tala Durith's safehouse on Mapuzo. When his old friend Kenobi, having also survived Order 66, entered the safehouse during the Empire's search for him, he learned of Vos's survival and his assistance to the group.

J-3DI was a fan of Vos, who came to be an inspiration of him.

In 9 ABY, the droid J-3DI wore an outfit and wielded a lightsaber hilt resembling Vos's Clone Wars armor while competing as a Hunter on the Outer Rim Sports Network's competition holoshow Hunters of the Outer Rim. J-3DI reflected on Vos's rule-breaking tendencies during his time in the Jedi Order, finding them distasteful, but acknowledged that Vos's commitment to the Order served as an inspiration to him.

During the New Republic Era, Ventress and Vos's rescue of Marg Krim's family was mentioned in "Index of Organizations", a survival compendium distributed by Carson Teva, where they were described as "unidentified Force users."

Between 28 ABY and 34 ABY, Luke Skywalker noted in The Secrets of the Jedi that Vos was one of the Jedi rumored to have survived the Purge.

Personality and traits

Vos wore distinctive clothing not typical of a Jedi.

Quinlan Vos, a male Kiffar, possessed black hair, brown eyes, and a tan complexion. His height reached 1.91 meters, equivalent to 6 feet and 3 inches. Distinctive yellow tattoos adorned his face and left arm.

In contrast to his rule-abiding Clone Commander, Faie, Vos was characterized as sarcastic and a nonconformist, often bending Jedi regulations. This was evident during his collaboration with Kenobi in the search for Ziro, where he made lighthearted remarks and favored his own operational methods, including his direct approach with the Grand Hutt Council. As an instructor, he cultivated a deep connection with his Padawan, Aayla Secura, who eventually had to release her attachment to him to progress as a Jedi Knight.

During his time as a Padawan, Vos was known for initiating skirmishes within the Jedi Temple. Although he appreciated the library, he preferred to rest there rather than study. Despite his tendency to irritate other Jedi, Vos maintained a positive relationship with Obi-Wan Kenobi. His unconventional nature, coupled with the emotional impact of losing his master, Tholme, early in the war, frequently led him to undertake solo missions.

While working undercover, Vos encountered the dark side adept Asajj Ventress and formed a connection with her. His proficiency in undercover work led the Jedi Council to select him for a mission to assassinate Count Dooku, aiming to bring an end to the Clone Wars. Despite his affection for Ventress, Vos was disturbed by her bloodthirsty tendencies and violent actions. Driven by his mission, Vos agreed to Ventress's condition that he train under her in the dark side of the Force. Although Vos was later consumed by hatred for Ventress after she murdered his former Master Tholme, his love for her was strong enough for them to reconcile. Ultimately, Vos's love for Ventress motivated him to consider leaving the Jedi Order once he had completed his mission to eliminate Dooku.

Although Vos became an apprentice to Count Dooku and inflicted substantial damage upon the Republic and the Jedi, his primary reason for embracing the dark side was to expose Dooku's hidden master, Darth Sidious, and eliminate both Sith Lords. Despite embracing the dark side and harming the Jedi and the Republic, Vos still cared for his former allies. On one occasion, Vos's bond with the Jedi Knight Desh prompted him to grant him a merciful death after Desh poisoned himself in an attempt to recapture Vos. Later, Vos's affection for Ventress provided him with the fortitude to return to the light side and the Jedi Order. Vos and Faie did not see eye to eye, due to Faie's serious disposition clashing with Vos' personality. After Ventress's passing, Vos found a new love interest in Khaleen Hentz.

Powers and abilities

Vos and Kenobi fight Bane on Teth.

Quinlan Vos was well-known for his psychometric abilities. This unique talent allowed him to perceive the memories of individuals through physical contact with objects they had touched. This ability transformed the unorthodox Jedi Knight into a highly skilled tracker, which he used in missions that took him into the galaxy's criminal underbelly. His interactions with criminals provided him with insights into the workings of the underworld, enabling him to uncover the truth behind Ziro's escape from Republic custody and the involvement of the Hutt Council. Later, Vos employed his psychometric skills to examine his late master Tholme's lightsaber, which led him to identify Asajj Ventress as the one responsible for his master's death.

As a Jedi Master, Vos was highly skilled in lightsaber combat, wielding a green-bladed lightsaber with an aggressive and unpredictable style. During the pursuit of Ziro, he demonstrated exceptional lightsaber skills, collaborating with Kenobi to confront the notorious bounty hunter Cad Bane. Vos successfully overwhelmed Kav Bayons and Akar-Deshu in a combined effort, defeated the infamous Jedi killer Grievous, overpowered Asajj Ventress in two separate duels, and held his own alongside Ventress against Count Dooku, even disarming Dooku for the first time. Kenobi described Vos's combat style after his turn to the Sith as "aggressive and unpredictable." Vos was also capable of using his lightsaber to deflect Force lightning, redirecting it back to its source. After receiving training from Asajj Ventress, enhancing his lightsaber skills and hand-to-hand combat abilities, Vos became exceptionally powerful and dangerous, rivaling Ventress herself. This skill was further refined through months of training as a Sith Lord under Darth Tyranus. His mastery of the dark side, fueled by hatred, aggression, and an unpredictable lightsaber form, enabled him to defeat Dooku a second time and completely dominate him.

Quinlan also possessed the ability to levitate objects and people using his Force powers. On one occasion, he used the Force to lift the Pyke child Vram from a lava flow on the volcanic world of Mustafar, saving him from severe burns or death. Under Ventress's guidance, Vos gained the ability to harness the power of the dark side of the Force. In one instance, he was able to fight effectively despite being bitten by a venomous snake and successfully outmaneuvered Ventress in a duel. Later, he used the dark side to levitate and kill the Sleeper, a large crustacean creature, by choking it. Vos also demonstrated the ability to Force push and levitate Dooku during their second duel.

Vos was also recognized for his exceptional agility, which he further enhanced through regular training climbs and long runs with Ventress near their camp on Dathomir. While Vos was skilled enough to use the Force to conceal his embrace of the dark side, he was unable to deceive everyone. His lover, Asajj, recognized his dark side alignment when she noticed his eyes flashing with hatred. Later, Yoda was able to discern during a private conversation with Vos that the Master had indeed turned to the dark side. Despite his embrace of the dark side, Vos was able to return to the light due to his love for Asajj Ventress.

Vos's attire often deviated from traditional Jedi garments, including black clothing while on Tatooine. During the hunt for Ziro, he wore a traditional Jedi tunic, but it was sleeveless and accompanied by armor on his shoulder and lower arms.

Behind the scenes

Quinlan Vos, in a deleted animatic from Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith.

Quinlan Vos originated from a background character seen in the streets of Mos Espa in the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, written and directed by Star Wars creator George Lucas. Author John Ostrander and artist Jan Duursema developed the character based on this appearance. Ostrander named the character after Qui-Gon Jinn, wanting a name with the same number of syllables. Vos went on to play a significant role in various Star Wars Legends narratives, including Star Wars: Republic.

Lucas took notice of the character's development in the Expanded Universe, enjoying the Republic comics. Intrigued by Vos, the director decided to include him in the 2005 film Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. The character was originally intended to appear on Kashyyyk, the Wookiee homeworld, during the execution of Order 66, but the scene was never filmed. An animatic was created, showing Vos with a group of clones on a HAVw A6 Juggernaut during Order 66. Another A6 approached Vos and his squad and fired at the Jedi's tank, killing the crew. Ultimately, only a brief mention of the character remained in the final film. After Anakin Skywalker missed a briefing in the Jedi Temple, Obi-Wan Kenobi informed him that "Master Vos moved his troops to Boz Pity."

Vos later appeared in "Hunt for Ziro", the ninth episode of the third season of the animated television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, voiced by Al Rodrigo. Vos was initially scheduled to appear in the first season episode "Bombad Jedi", where he would have been working undercover and using his Force abilities to help Jar Jar Binks appear to be a Jedi. His appearance was cut due to the production's limited resources and time for creating new character models.

Although "Hunt for Ziro" was Vos's only appearance on The Clone Wars, he was planned to be part of a series of episodes featuring a team-up between him and Asajj Ventress. These eight episodes formed a single story arc written by Katie Lucas. The character was set to receive a new design for these episodes, featuring darker armor and twin DL-44 blaster pistols, which the production referred to as "Quinlan Vos B Bounty Hunter Disguise." Although the eight episodes were never finished due to the show's cancellation in 2013, the episodes, including Vos's central role in the arc, served as the foundation for the 2015 novel Dark Disciple by Christie Golden. The novel provided a deeper exploration of the characters, including the psychological complexities of Vos and Ventress.
