Verla, a human female with sensitivity to the Force, served as an acolyte to Ferren Barr, a Jedi Padawan who had fallen from grace, during the early years of the Galactic Empire's reign. Unlike Barr's other followers, Verla's connection to the Force meant she could potentially undergo Jedi training. Consequently, Barr took on the mantle of Jedi Master, instructing Verla in the mastery of her powers. Verla remained loyal to Barr and supported his scheme to ignite a rebellion against the rule of Emperor Palpatine. Along with the other acolytes, she stood by her Master as he manipulated both the Mon Calamari and the Empire into a conflict, which ultimately resulted in the Imperial occupation of Mon Cala.
As Imperial forces seized control of the oceanic world, Barr and his acolytes found themselves the target of the Emperor's Jedi hunters, known as the Inquisitorius, under the command of the Sith Lord Darth Vader. In Bel City, Verla and her Master faced the Inquisitors, but the Jedi cleverly manipulated the clone Purge Troopers into enacting Order 66 against the Inquisitorius, whose members had previously served the Jedi Order before the fall of the Galactic Republic. After eluding the Inquisitors, Barr instructed Verla to depart the planet and ensure her survival, while he stayed behind to confront Vader in single combat. Barr hoped that Verla would finish her training under the guidance of another survivor of the Great Jedi Purge.
By the time the Galactic Civil War was underway, Verla had settled into a quiet existence as a fisherwoman on Serelia. She was eventually discovered by Luke Skywalker, a Jedi trainee, and was horrified to learn that he was Vader's son.

Following the conclusion of the Clone Wars in 19 BBY, Verla crossed paths with Ferren Barr, a Jedi Padawan. Having survived the initial Great Jedi Purge, Barr sought to avenge the Jedi Order by instigating a rebellion against the Sith-controlled Galactic Empire. To achieve this, he gathered several acolytes to his cause, with Verla among them. Unlike the other disciples, Verla demonstrated an aptitude for wielding the Force. Recognizing her potential, Barr decided to train Verla in the ways of the Force, effectively becoming her Jedi Master.
In 18 BBY, a year after Emperor Palpatine came to power (accession), Verla was in hiding on the oceanic planet of Mon Cala alongside Barr and the other acolytes. During the Battle of Dac City, King Lee-Char informed Barr that Darth Vader, the Sith Lord, and three Imperial Inquisitors had arrived to hunt down the Jedi. Verla's Master revealed to his students that Vader was, in reality, Anakin Skywalker, a Jedi Knight and the Chosen One destined to bring balance to the Force. Barr showed the acolytes holograms of how the Sith Lord had aided in the destruction of the Jedi, using his R1-series astromech droid, Endee.

Having successfully initiated a war between the Mon Calamari and the Empire, Barr and his students observed the conflict via a hologram projected by Endee. After Lee-Char notified them that Vader had discovered their location, Barr and his acolytes fled their refuge, only to be immediately confronted by the Sith Lord and his Jedi hunters. Three acolytes perished during the ensuing pursuit; two others chose to stay behind to give Barr and Verla more time to escape the planet. However, the Padawan and his remaining acolyte were trapped by the Inquisitorius in Bel City. Verla watched in astonishment as her Master used the Force to compel the Purge Troopers—the last group of clones activated after the purge—to execute Order 66 on the Inquisitorius, all of whom had once been members of the Jedi Order.
Amidst the chaos between the Inquisitors and their troopers, Verla and Barr escaped from the assassins. Shortly thereafter, Verla's Master instructed her to leave Mon Cala once the fighting subsided and to seek out another Jedi Master. Barr hoped that Verla would complete her training under the guidance of a fully-trained Jedi, such as Quinlan Vos, Obi-Wan Kenobi, or even Yoda. Barr confronted Vader, but was slain in a lightsaber duel against the Dark Lord of the Sith. Verla herself fled from Bel City and later hid in a dark cave with two Quarren soldiers by the time Mon Cala fell to the Empire.
For the next two decades, Verla tried to follow the instructions her master gave her before he died. Verla attempted to become a Jedi but had many encounters with the Inquisitorius and, on rare occasions, a visit from Darth Vader himself. She lived a difficult life, trying for years to find a teacher and lightsaber, only finding fear, pain, and death. Everyone she grew close to was killed off by agents of the dark side, or she had to leave behind when she had to run and pondered how she survived. She did seem to become familiar with certain things about the Jedi history as she was aware of the High Republic Era, and knew what holocrons were. Added with she knew the saying of "Do or do not. There is no try." She eventually became aware of an ancient Jedi outpost located on Tempes. She knew what she needed was inside a Lightsaber and holocrons, but never entered when she arrived feeling something dark and malevolent inside. She sometime after that eventually gave up on her Jedi path, thinking she was told to do something by a dead man.
By 3 ABY, Verla resided on Serelia, working at the fishing docks of the oceanic planet. Sometime after his duel against Darth Vader on Cloud City, Luke Skywalker, the Jedi trainee, experienced a Force vision while training with a blaster in which a hooded Verla grabbed his falling lightsaber after losing it during the duel and asked him to follow his destiny. Upon receiving a similar vision while searching his lightsaber through the dump of Cloud City, Skywalker once again got a glimpse of a hooded Verla holding his lightsaber while standing on the waters of Serelia and asking him to follow his destiny.
Upon Luke's arrival on Serelia, Verla was in conversation with TRK-R, a hauler droid, who was there to collect a shipment of fish that Verla had caught. As he approached her and asked if she was a Jedi, Verla dropped the fish on Skywalker and TRK-R before fleeing, thinking Skywalker was another Inquisitor hunting her down. Fleeing across the water with her boat, Verla lured Skywalker onto an island and trapped him. With Skywalker at his mercy, Verla asked him what he wanted, and Skywalker told her about his vision and that he was a Jedi like her. However, Verla told him that she was no Jedi and proceeded to share her views on the Jedi to the young boy once she realized he wasn't an Inquisitor. However, as she told him about the Jedi Purge, the Inquisitorius and Darth Vader, she sensed something in him when she uttered the Sith Lord's name.
After probing Skywalker's mind, Verla realized with horror that Luke was none other than Darth Vader's son. Then, Verla attempted to drown Skywalker to death. However, she was then knocked out by R2-D2, who then rescued Skywalker. Skywalker waited by Verla until she awoke, telling her of how he was not like his father and asking for more information about the Jedi. On the condition he would let her live her peaceful life once he was gone, she obliged and then told him he could find a lightsaber, which Skywalker was in need of after losing his previous blade to his father on Cloud City, in a Jedi outpost left abandoned on Tempes, although she also warned him of a dark presence stalking the grounds.

Verla, a human female characterized by blonde hair and fair skin, displayed unwavering loyalty to Ferren Barr and his mission to free the galaxy from the control of the Galactic Empire, mirroring the dedication of her fellow acolytes. As an obedient apprentice, she followed her Master's instructions without hesitation; when the Inquisitors posed a threat to Barr's life, Verla stood ready to fight and die alongside the Jedi. Upon Barr's successful manipulation of the clones against the Inquisitorius, Verla expressed her astonishment at his skillful use of Order 66 to their advantage.
However, as she aged, Verla's perspective on the Jedi underwent a significant transformation. During Luke Skywalker's visit to her on Serelia during the Galactic Civil War, Verla expressed her belief that anyone aspiring to be a Jedi was foolish, asserting that all accounts of the Jedi only highlighted the positive aspects of their Order while neglecting their shortcomings. She regarded Skywalker as a naive and deluded young man, a "sucker" who might have mistakenly believed he had a Jedi destiny simply because he could move a rock with the Force. By this time, Verla had also developed a sense of paranoia, leading her to flee from Skywalker upon their initial encounter, suspecting him of being an Inquisitor.
Being Force-sensitive, Verla possessed the capacity to harness the power of the Force. Barr, offering to teach Verla how to control her powers, imparted his limited Jedi training as a Padawan to Verla, who became his apprentice in the ways of the Force. Even before commencing her training, Verla demonstrated her talent by levitating a small object. By the time she faced the Inquisitorius, Verla had acquired sufficient knowledge to enhance her physical capabilities, enabling her to leap over the Jedi hunters with the assistance of the Force and her Master. She was also skilled in her ability to "read" people, able to discern whether someone was attempting to lie to her or read someone's memories.
Verla made her debut in the canon 2018 comic Darth Vader (2017) 14, penned by Charles Soule and illustrated by Giuseppe Camuncoli. In issue 15, Verla's hair appears darker compared to its depiction in other issues of Star Wars: Darth Vader (2017).
