Jedi training

JediTemple cloudysky Within the Jedi Temple situated on Coruscant, individuals sensitive to the Force were instructed in its applications and principles as members of the Jedi Order. Instructing Jedi involved imparting the knowledge of the Force to an apprentice within the framework of the Jedi Order. During the era of the Galactic Republic, Force-sensitive individuals originating from various locations throughout the galaxy were brought to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. There, they were trained as Jedi younglings under the guidance of Grand Master Yoda. As they progressed, the younglings would become Padawans, mentored by either a Jedi Master or a Jedi Knight. Successful completion of the Jedi Trials led to the Padawan achieving the rank of Jedi Knight, signifying full membership within the Jedi Order.

The fall of the Jedi Order during Order 66 resulted in the near-extinction of Jedi training. However, it persisted through the surviving Jedi who evaded the Great Jedi Purge. Following the demise of the Sith, Luke Skywalker endeavored to re-establish the Jedi Order by mentoring a new generation. Despite the setback caused by Ben Solo's descent into the dark side of the Force, Skywalker transmitted his knowledge to his final apprentice, Rey, a scavenger hailing from Jakku.

Overview

A Jedi must resist the temptation of the dark side lest they be consumed by it.

Those who belonged to the Jedi Order received instruction in the applications of the Force. The specifics of each Jedi's training varied, contingent upon their Master's approach. Mentors exhibited diverse styles, ranging from the unconventional Qui-Gon Jinn to the emotionally influenced Anakin Skywalker, as well as more orthodox Jedi figures such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, and Grand Master Yoda. The curriculum included advanced instruction in fields such as military history, diplomacy, science, investigation, ancient history, and medical science. While lightsaber dueling was regarded as optimal training for Padawans, its practicality was limited since Jedi were the only ones wielding lightsabers during the Republic. They were also taught to resist mind probes and interrogation.

During the Clone Wars, Padawans received supplementary training to prepare them as capable commanders of the Republic military under the leadership of a Jedi General due to the Galactic Republic's deficiency in military leadership.

Fundamentally, every Jedi was obligated to adhere to the principles of the Jedi Code, which included the prohibition against training more than one apprentice at a time. As Jedi, they were trained to harness the power of the light side exclusively, to disregard external validation, and to resist the allurements of the dark side of the Force.

History

Age of the Jedi

As Grand Master of the Jedi Order, Yoda personally oversaw the younglings' training in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.

During the era of the Galactic Republic, Force-sensitive individuals were identified through their midi-chlorian counts and subsequently transported to the Core World of Coruscant to commence their education within the Jedi Temple. Training began at the Jedi youngling stage, with students studying in groups of twenty. The younglings were collectively taken to the remote planet of Ilum to acquire a kyber crystal as part of a rite of passage known as the Gathering. Following this, they would construct their personal lightsaber, utilizing the crystal as its power source.

Following the Initiate Trials, a youngling needed selection as an apprentice, formally known as Padawan, to proceed to the next phase in their journey toward becoming a fully recognized member of the Jedi Order. Those holding the rank of Jedi Knight were responsible for guiding the next generation of Jedi, while senior members, recognized as Jedi Masters, were also at liberty to choose a Padawan at their discretion. After further refining their skills in lightsaber combat and various Force techniques, a Padawan could undertake the Jedi Trials once deemed prepared by the Jedi High Council. Those who successfully completed their final assessments were granted the title of Jedi Knight by the Council.

Dark times

The training of Luke Skywalker represented a new hope for the Jedi Order, which was all but destroyed by the Galactic Empire.

Following Order 66, the Jedi Order was nearly eradicated, leaving only a small number of survivors and fugitives evading the newly established Galactic Empire. The Jedi that the Empire captured were subjected to torture and indoctrination, leading them to succumb to the dark side and join the Inquisitorius. Nevertheless, a few Jedi managed to escape the Great Jedi Purge, including Cal Kestis, who served as the Padawan of Jedi General Jaro Tapal during the Clone Wars. After forming a bond with another former Jedi, Cere Junda, Kestis embarked on a mission to rebuild his Order by locating Force-sensitive children for training as the next generation of Jedi. However, due to the threat posed by the Empire, Kestis ultimately abandoned this mission, believing the children's destinies should be entrusted to the Force. Throughout his journey, Kestis managed to relearn the Jedi arts and complete his training, ultimately being knighted by Junda, who also reconnected with her Jedi heritage.

Kanan Jarrus, another former Padawan who survived Order 66, discovered his own student: Ezra Bridger, an orphan whose inherent Force-sensitivity made him a potential Jedi trainee. Despite his initial efforts to train Bridger, Jarrus felt inadequate as a mentor, having never completed his own training. He set out to rescue Jedi Master Luminara Unduli after hearing rumors that she might have survived the Purge, believing she would be a more suitable teacher for Bridger. However, the rumor was a trap to lure fugitive Jedi to the Grand Inquisitor. Jarrus intensified his efforts to properly train Bridger, but at one point his apprentice displayed potential with the dark side. Concerned by Bridger's ability to harness the dark side, Jarrus cautioned him to not lose control of his emotions.

Although he was reaching the age of nine hundred, Yoda worked to train Luke Skywalker on Dagobah.

Roughly two decades after the Galactic Empire assumed power, Luke Skywalker embarked on a quest to become a Jedi Knight like his father before him. He initially received training from Anakin Skywalker's former Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, who instructed Luke on how to perceive the Force through his emotions. However, their time together as Master and apprentice was abruptly ended by Kenobi's death at the hands of the Sith Lord Darth Vader, compelling the young Skywalker to continue his Jedi training independently. After communicating with the Force spirit of Kenobi, Skywalker journeyed to Dagobah, where he discovered Yoda, the venerable Grand Master of the Jedi Order. However, Yoda was initially discouraged by Skywalker's attitude, seeing much of Anakin's impatience and anger in Luke. After some deliberation and Kenobi's endorsement, Yoda chose to overlook Skywalker's age as well as his penchant for adventure and excitement in order to complete his training.

Skywalker and Yoda frequently clashed during their time together, with Yoda attempting to teach his apprentice to remain calm and in control of his developing Jedi abilities. Yet Skywalker remained reckless, prematurely ending his training to confront Darth Vader. Consequently, he suffered a painful defeat in battle against the Dark Lord of the Sith, who revealed his former identity as the boy's father, Anakin Skywalker. By the time Luke returned to Dagobah to finish his Jedi training, Yoda had fallen ill and was nearing his merging with the Force. Yoda informed Skywalker that, while he required no further formal training, he had to confront his father one last time to truly become a Jedi. Skywalker not only passed his final test but also inspired Vader to renounce the dark side, destroying the Sith and fulfilling his destiny as the Chosen One.

Revival

Following the defeat of the Sith, Luke Skywalker traveled throughout the galaxy in search of knowledge to aid in the restoration of the Jedi Order. He trained his sister Leia Organa in the ways of the Force until she halted her training to safeguard her son, Ben Solo, from the death she had foreseen would occur if she continued down that path. Skywalker proceeded to train the former Jedi youngling Grogu on the planet Ossus, where he employed ant droids to construct a new Jedi school. Grogu soon departed the temple to reunite with his guardian Din Djarin and embrace the life of a Mandalorian.

In addition to a dozen other students, Skywalker mentored his nephew Ben in the Jedi arts on Ossus. Like his uncle and grandfather, Solo possessed a natural aptitude for the Force, exhibiting immense strength and the potential for unlimited power. As Ben and the other initial students matured, new younglings entered the temple's care, with individuals such as Enyo and the now-Padawan Solo assisting Skywalker in imparting the Order's teachings. Skywalker placed his hopes for the future of the Jedi Order in Solo, and for a period, he believed that he would not die as the last Jedi. However, Skywalker's plans were thwarted by the machinations of the secretly still-alive Palpatine and his puppet, Supreme Leader Snoke, who swayed Solo to the dark side, resulting in the destruction of Skywalker's new generation of Jedi.

Renouncing his mandate to rebuild the Jedi Order, Skywalker resolved to die in exile as the last of the Jedi, until he was located on Ahch-To by Rey, a scavenger from Jakku. However, Skywalker had no intention of abandoning his hermitage to aid the Resistance in its war against the First Order, much less training another generation of Jedi. Rey's persistence eventually wore Skywalker down, however. Condensing Jedi training into three lessons, he agreed to teach Rey the ways of the Force. After Skywalker sacrificed his life defending the Resistance during the Battle of Crait, Rey resumed her training under Organa.
