Ossus

Ossus, a terrestrial world, existed within the Adega system found in the Outer Rim Territories' Auril sector, and maintained ties to the Jedi Order. At least one forest moon orbited this planet. Certain Jedi scholars have argued that the first temple of the Jedi Order was located on Ossus. The Qel-Droma Epics depict Ossus as a haven for the Jedi and the most extensive collection of Jedi wisdom ever assembled. The Great Jedi Library and a Jedi temple were, without question, situated on Ossus.

The Qel-Droma Epics recount the devastation of Ossus during the Cron Supernova. In this event, Naga Sadow, a Sith Lord, instigated the transformation of stars within the Cron Cluster into supernovae. The Jedi were able to save a small portion of the artifacts stored on the planet, including mosaic floors and the Chronicles of Med'eeth, which were transported to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant by way of Exis Station, which was situated nearby.

Legend states that the few Jedi who lived through the catastrophe united to ensure their survival. Over countless years, these humans evolved into the tribal Ysanna, a group of near-humans among whom Force-sensitivity was highly prevalent, and they considered it a form of ancient magic. The remaining humans on the planet were a smaller group.

During the New Republic Era, Luke Skywalker, a Jedi Master, established his Jedi temple on Ossus. He provided training to students there until the temple faced destruction in 28 ABY, which then led to his self-imposed exile.

Description

A lightning storm rages across the barren surface of Ossus

Ossus, a terrestrial planet, was situated in the Adega system within the Auril sector of the Outer Rim Territories in the galaxy, specifically at coordinates R-6 on the Standard Galactic Grid, and was orbited by at least one forest moon. Once a desolate place, Ossus was marked by severe lightning storms, though it had become lush by the time of the New Republic Era. It served as a habitat for kaddyr bugs, kirruks, Sorgan frogs, and mud yaks.

History

Early history

Ossus as depicted in the Qel-Droma Epics.

According to the Qel-Droma Epics, Ossus acted as a defense against aggression from the Hutt and Sith, and it was a Jedi refuge and the most extensive repository of Jedi knowledge ever. Some scholars believed that the first Jedi temple ever constructed was located there, although Ahch-To, Coruscant, Jedha, and Tython were also considered. The legendary planet was rumored to contain a wealth of holocrons and datacards filled with Jedi wisdom from all eras, and discovering it could grant access to unparalleled power.

According to the Jedi, around 12,000 BBY, Ossus became a central location for the culture of the Jedi Order and a site of pilgrimage that was nearly mandatory. Jedi who worked along the Perlemian Trade Route reportedly went to Ossus to find unique opportunities to train with other Jedi Masters and think about the broader scope of the Force. It was one of the worlds noted in a chapter of the Rammahgon, an ancient Jedi text penned by the Jedi Kli the Elder, together with Jedha and Xenxiar.

The Qel-Droma Epics state that Odan-Urr received his Jedi training at the Jedi Praxeum on Ossus under Jedi Master Ooroo, and he later honored a promise to his Master by designing and overseeing the construction of the Great Jedi Library on top of the Ooroo Canyon. Odan-Urr also ordered the construction of the Knossa Branch Library in the Ossus city of Knossa, for academics and Jedi who were seeking knowledge for investigations that were time-sensitive.

The Great Library was destroyed sometime before the Clone Wars. At some point before the building of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, the Jedi evacuated a number of the holobooks and artifacts from the lost Great Jedi Library on Ossus, and these made it to the Jedi Archives on Coruscant. At some point, the mosaic floor from the Ossus temple was recovered and transported to the Order's new headquarters on Coruscant.

The Qel-Droma Epics tell of Ossus being destroyed during the Cron Supernova around 4000 BBY, when Naga Sadow, a Sith Lord, caused stars in the Cron Cluster to turn into supernovae. The Jedi had little warning about the impending disaster and prioritized the artifacts from the Chamber of Antiquities of the Great Jedi Library. Despite their efforts, they only managed to save a small portion of the artifacts stored on the planet, and these were transported to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant by way of Exis Station, leaving the Great Library in ruins. Before the establishment of the Jedi High Council on Coruscant, a Jedi Council was situated on Ossus.

Galactic Republic

As recently as 122 BBY, the Jedi Order suggested that they had Ossus artifacts that were named in the Qel-Droma Epics. At some point before the birth of the antiques dealer Antron Bach, the last charred piece of the Chronicles of Med'eeth was also recovered from the planet's ruins.

At some point during or after the Clone Wars, Ossus was part of a conspiracy theory that claimed Count Dooku, the fallen Jedi who had publicly led the Confederacy of Independent Systems, had set up a base there to look for lost artifacts. Around the same time, another rumor circulated about a secret hyperspace route to Ossus and the Jedi having a hidden fortune there.

New Republic Era

The new temple

Ahsoka Tano and Din Djarin observed the early stages of the temple's construction.

At some point, Luke Skywalker, a Jedi Master, explored the underground ruins of Ossus and found the original Rammahgon text, which was believed to have been destroyed more than five thousand years before. Skywalker sought to rebuild the Jedi Order after the Great Jedi Purge by training a new generation of Jedi in the ways of the Force, and he built his new Jedi temple and school on Ossus. Around 9 ABY, Din Djarin, a Mandalorian, went to Ossus to see Grogu, a Force-sensitive foundling whom he protected and ultimately returned to the Jedi. The temple was in its early stages of construction at the time, and Djarin saw several ant droids building a dome-shaped structure.

A new generation

Skywalker would train nearly a dozen students at the temple.

Between 15 ABY and 16 ABY, he accepted more students, including Hennix, Tai, and Voe, and he trained them and Ben Solo in the ways of the Force at his Jedi Temple.

In his lessons about the nature of the Force, Skywalker explained how the Force flowed everywhere and that all things were equal in it. While some, like Solo, found it easier to let the Force flow through them, that did not make any being stronger than another. Skywalker taught them Jedi techniques and traditions such as telekinesis, meditation, and the use and construction of lightsabers. As his first class of students got older, new younglings were brought in and trained, with Skywalker getting help from Solo and the Twi'lek Enyo in these matters.

Temple ablaze

After regaining consciousness, Skywalker and R2-D2 stared at the destroyed temple in shock and shame.

One night in 28 ABY, Skywalker was so concerned about Solo that he decided he needed to go to his nephew's room and confront him. As he looked into his sleeping nephew's mind, Skywalker sensed a growing darkness and the schemes of Snoke. Skywalker instinctively activated his lightsaber. However, it was a brief moment, and Skywalker was quickly overcome by shame and regret. Solo woke up to find his uncle standing over him with his lightsaber drawn, and he believed that his uncle intended to kill him. He fought Skywalker and destroyed his own dwelling with the Force in the process.

Solo left the ruins of his room believing that his uncle was dead, and he was confused and consumed by despair and rage at the betrayal. Driven by his fear and anger, Solo destroyed the temple and its students with a powerful lightning storm from the sky that set the temple on fire and killed the Jedi inside.

First Order-Resistance War

Kylo Ren, the Supreme Leader, sought revenge on his former master and uncle after the Battle of Crait. He briefly visited the ruins of the Jedi temple and ordered General Hux to use an orbital bombardment to attack the location.

Inhabitants

Ossus was inhabited by a human population and, according to legend, the sentient Ysanna species, a tribal group of near-humans who had a high percentage of Force-sensitivity. The Ysanna wore tribal masks and relied on the native kirruk, living in the nitrogen-rich valleys near the Eocho Mountains. Farming was their primary source of [food](/article/foodstuff], but hunting with concussion bows became more and more useful. It was also the homeworld of Veris Hydan, a scholar of Jedi and Sith lore who advised Emperor Palpatine during the time of the Galactic Empire.

Locations

Knossa

Knossa, one of the few cities on Ossus that is named in the Qel-Droma Epics, was built from stone and bronzium, and its squat domes were located high in the western Eocho Mountains. Knossa supposedly included the Eye of Ashlanae, a powerful Force vergence on one of its peaks, and Knossa Spaceport, which resembled a sprawling promenade wrapped around Agorn Mountain. The spaceport was originally built to support pilgrims who were visiting the nearby Eye of Ashlanae.

Great Jedi Library

Chamber of Antiquities during the Imperial Era.

The Epics state that Odan-Urr designed and oversaw the building of the Great Jedi Library on top of the Ooroo Canyon on Ossus to fulfill a promise that he made to his Master Ooroo. The Hall of Knowledge, the main public area of the Great Library's collections, was open to the public and included chambers on multiple levels and with various functions. The Hall of Knowledge was sprawling and exhaustive, containing ancient star charts and Jedi texts, philosophical texts, and galactic histories for thousands of worlds.

Odan-Urr catalogued and studied ancient artifacts in the Chamber of Antiquities, and he also translated and digitized writings. He kept the most treasured and dangerous items in the entire library there. The library stood for nearly a thousand years as the physical representation of the Jedi's dedication to knowledge. It required several days of pilgrimage to reach Ooroo Canyon, where the library was situated, far from Knossa and Ossus City. The Great Library was devastated during the Cron Supernova, and by the Imperial Era, its ruins were the only remains of what had once been a palatial facility.

Behind the scenes

Ossus as it first appeared in Tales of the Jedi

Ossus was first mentioned canonically in the short story "The End of History" by Alexander Freed, which was published in issue 154 of Star Wars Insider magazine on December 9, 2014. In the Star Wars Legends continuity, Ossus was first mentioned in the endnotes essay for the fourth issue of the Star Wars: Dark Empire comic series, which was written by Tom Veitch, and first appeared in the first issue of the Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi story arc The Freedon Nadd Uprising, which was written by Veitch, illustrated by Tony Akins, and published by Dark Horse Comics on August 2, 1994.

In the 2015 film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, a planet covered in forests appears in a vision to the character Rey, and it is established that this is where Luke Skywalker's Jedi Temple is located. However, the planet is not named in the film and remained unidentified for several years. This planet reappeared in the sixth episode of the 2022 Disney+ television series The Book of Boba Fett, and it was still not named in dialogue. However, according to Pablo Hidalgo of the Lucasfilm Story Group, the episode's script, which was written by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, decided that the forested planet and Ossus were the same. This decision was further spread in the 2022 novel Shadow of the Sith by Adam Christopher, which was the first source to name the planet Ossus in print.

The 2019 reference book Ultimate Star Wars, New Edition established Ossus as the homeworld of Veris Hydan. The author Adam Bray wanted to make a meaningful Star Wars Legends connection. He also noted the irony of an Imperial Advisor being born on the planet that once housed the Great Jedi Library, a place that contained all Jedi knowledge.
