Biography

Hailing from Flushing, New York, Jon Favreau entered the world on October 19, 1966.

Before Solo: A Star Wars Story was released, Ron Howard, the film's director, made it known that Favreau would be providing the voice for a "very cool & important" alien character in the movie. Later, Favreau himself posted a picture of the character on Twitter.

Disney desired a launch as impactful as their films for their streaming platform, Disney+. Consequently, Lucasfilm Ltd. President Kathleen Kennedy initially approached Favreau, who expressed having an idea and committing to the Star Wars universe. Following their meeting at Kennedy's office, Favreau commenced writing without a formal contract. Upon his official hiring, he had already penned the initial four episodes centered around a Mandalorian. Kennedy facilitated a meeting between Favreau and Dave Filoni in Los Angeles, where they exchanged concepts and sketches for a Mandalorian-centric show. Favreau merged his vision of a solitary gunslinger with Filoni's deep understanding of Mandalorian lore. Favreau's concept included the Child, a topic they extensively discussed. Favreau and the production team aimed for the Child to appear endearingly goofy rather than overly cute. Christian Alzmann's drawing of the Child was the first that resonated. Favreau then enlisted Pedro Pascal to portray the Mandalorian, who would later be identified as Din Djarin.

On March 8, 2018, the public learned that Favreau would be both the writer and executive producer of The Mandalorian, the upcoming live-action Star Wars television series. In an interview with Anthony Carboni on May 10, 2018, during the premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Favreau mentioned he was halfway through writing the series' first season. As Favreau and fellow executive producer Dave Filoni began their collaboration, Filoni consistently brought up Ahsoka Tano, stating that Rosario Dawson was his top choice for the role. Favreau revealed his familiarity with the actress, which streamlined the casting process. Favreau and Filoni opted not to introduce Tano in the first season of the show. During the initial stages of Season One's production, Favreau shared with Filoni that the Child would be named Grogu. Knowing they wanted Tano to feature in the story of Season Two, they began picturing Dawson in the part, even creating artwork of her as Tano. Around the time of the first season's release, Dawson received a FaceTime call from Favreau and Filoni, who presented her with visuals and concepts from their plans for Season Two, including artwork of her as Tano. They extended an offer for her to play Tano, which she accepted.

During The Walt Disney Company's Investor Day event on December 10, 2020, it was announced that Favreau, alongside Filoni, would serve as executive producers for two television series connected to The Mandalorian: Rangers of the New Republic and Ahsoka. Favreau was the creator of The Book of Boba Fett television series, contributing as both a writer and executive producer. He conceived the Mods and envisioned them with a retro punk aesthetic.

While Filoni was in the process of writing episodes for Ahsoka, Favreau enhanced his writing by offering insights from the perspective of someone less immersed in animation and Ahsoka Tano's extensive history. After actress Natasha Liu Bordizzo submitted a self-tape, Favreau aimed to make the casting process as smooth as possible. Several months later, Bordizzo had a meeting with Favreau and Filoni, where Favreau clarified his contributions. Following Bordizzo's casting as the Mandalorian Sabine Wren in 2021, Favreau and Filoni suggested that she watch Star Wars Rebels, while also emphasizing that the live-action adaptation would be a fresh interpretation finding its own unique identity. Ahsoka commenced production on May 9, 2022. At Lucasfilm's Studio Showcase during Celebration Anaheim, 2022, Favreau and Filoni presented a video message from Rosario Dawson, who was in full costume on the show's set. Favreau then informed the audience about a special exhibit featuring costumes and props from The Mandalorian. At the Mando+ panel, Favreau and Filoni shared the initial footage from Ahsoka and introduced Bordizzo as Wren in the series.
