Foundling

Jango Fett Armed to the Teeth SoH The blueprint for the Galactic Republic's clone troopers was none other than Jango Fett, a Mandalorian foundling. Within Mandalorian society, the term Mandalorian foundling, or simply foundling, described youngsters taken in by the warriors of Mandalore.

Description

Mandalorians, guided by their Creed, were obligated to assist abandoned children they encountered, whether on the battlefield or during any other undertaking. According to this creed, a Mandalorian warrior who cared for a foundling was compelled to either reunite the child with their people or nurture them until adulthood, essentially acting as their parent. Upon reaching adulthood, the foundling, if not reunited, could choose to leave or join the Mandalorians. While foundlings were granted the same rights as other Mandalorians, including bearing armor and forming clans, instances of discrimination were observed. Mandalorian tradition dictated that a portion of earned beskar be donated to foundlings. With sufficient learning and training, foundlings could become apprentices. Saving a foundling was considered the greatest honor within the Mandalorian Creed.

History

Vera Beroya succeeded Nam Beroya, the chieftain of the Old Mandalorian Clan Awaud, as clan chieftain after Beroya was believed to have died during the Imperial Era; Nam Beroya had adopted Vera Beroya as his daughter.

Din Djarin, a Mandalorian foundling, became the father to the foundling Grogu.

Before the Galactic Empire's Great Purge of Mandalore, the foundlings were brought to Mandalore to be raised among the warrior culture. However, the remaining Mandalorians were forced into hiding following these events, including a group of warriors known as the Tribe, who adhered to the ancient Way of the Mandalore. To avoid detection, the Tribe concealed itself in a covert on Nevarro, emerging only one at a time. Given their dwindling numbers, the Tribe considered its foundlings crucial to the survival of Mandalorian culture.

Din Djarin, a member of the Tribe and a former foundling himself, worked as a bounty hunter for the Bounty Hunters' Guild on Nevarro. In 9 ABY, Djarin accepted a contract from an Imperial remnant operating on Nevarro to retrieve a bounty, receiving payment in beskar, Mandalorian steel stolen by the Empire. However, the bounty turned out to be a child of an unidentified species. After handing over the child to the Imperials, Djarin had a change of heart and, with the Tribe's help, rescued the child.

Weeks later, after a confrontation with the Imperial remnant on Nevarro, Djarin met again with "The Armorer," the Tribe's leader, in the enclave's ruins. She revealed that the child, like Djarin, was a Mandalorian foundling. She instructed Djarin to uphold the ancient Mandalorian creed and either return the child to its own kind or raise him until adulthood. By accepting this responsibility, Djarin earned the right to establish his own clan.

Axe Woves expressed prejudice against Djarin, the former foundling, asserting that he lacked Mandalorian blood. However, Bo-Katan Kryze countered that Djarin had embraced the Creed and chosen to follow the Way, just like their ancestors, making him every bit as Mandalorian as they were.
