Mon Cala

Mon Cala, alternatively known as Mon Calamari or Dac, was an oceanic world situated within the Mon Calamari system. This star system was a binary one, located in the Calamari sector of the Outer Rim Territories and The Slice, regions found in the galaxy.

This planet was the native home of two sentient aquatic species: the Mon Calamari, known for their industrious nature, and the Quarren, recognized for their pride. Mon Cala gained renown for its shipbuilding prowess, creating beautiful and distinctive starships utilized for various purposes, including leisurely cruises and extensive deep-space voyages. The Mon Calamari Shipyards company was managed by the Mon Calamari, while the Free Dac Volunteers Engineering Corps was operated by the Quarren.

A monarchy governed the planet, with the King of Mon Cala serving as its supreme leader. The king also presided over the Mon Cala planetary defense services and acted as the presiding judge in the Court Of Justice. Additionally, the ruler was responsible for maintaining the delicate balance between the Mon Calamari and Quarren while governing the planet.

Following the assassination of King Yos Kolina, Mon Cala became a conflict zone during the widespread Clone Wars. Seizing the opportunity, the Quarren, supported by the Confederacy of Independent Systems, initiated a rebellion against the Mon Calamari. Simultaneously, the Galactic Republic lent its support to the Mon Calamari. After an initial defeat by the Confederacy, the Gungan Grand Army intervened to aid the Republic. As the conflict drew to a close, the Quarren and Mon Calamari united to expel the Confederacy from Mon Cala.

Mon Cala significantly influenced galactic history through its involvement in the Galactic Civil War between the oppressive Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic. The planet committed its mercantile and exodus fleets to the Alliance's cause. Mon Calamari ships played a crucial role in numerous battles, enabling the Alliance fleet to confront Imperial warships on a more equitable basis.

Regrettably, Mon Cala endured severe consequences for its support of the rebellion. This prompted the surviving population to embrace a policy of isolationism, fearing further atrocities against their world. Despite this, Mon Cala once again pledged its ships to the cause of freedom, this time under Leia Organa's Resistance, inadvertently drawing the attention of the First Order to the aquatic planet.

Description

Mon Cala city, the planet's capital

Mon Cala, an ocean planet, was located in the Mon Calamari system within the Calamari sector of the Outer Rim Territories. The planet was positioned in the eastern part of the galaxy, a region known as The Slice. A lifeless moon with a barren surface and no atmosphere orbited the planet. Mon Cala's location was designated as square U-6 on the Standard Galactic Grid.

The oceans of Mon Cala teemed with life, including two prominent sentient species: the peace-loving Mon Calamari and the more aggressive Quarren [species](/article/species]. Both groups typically constructed their cities underwater, although some were also built on the water's surface. A single monarch governed the planet. Despite their differences, the two peoples generally maintained a respectful relationship throughout their shared history.

Coral thrived in vast colonies on Mon Cala, with their sturdy skeletons forming coral reefs that provided shelter, sustenance, and breeding grounds for diverse fish, [crustaceans](/article/crustacean], and other marine organisms. Coral tended to flourish in areas illuminated by the light of Mon Cala's twin suns, but some resilient species inhabited the dark depths below. In these dimly lit deep-sea environments, bioluminescence was a common characteristic among plants.

While sparse, small islands dotted Mon Cala's surface, often forming archipelagos. The terrain of these islands varied from rocky cliffs to sandy beaches with dense jungle vegetation. The polar regions were colder than the rest of the planet, with ice floes present in the north. Some Quarren and Mon Calamari chose to leave their homeworld to escape its politics, instead settling on the moon of Trask.

History

Ancient history

Mon Cala served as the original home for both the Mon Calamari and Quarren species. However, tensions eventually arose between the two groups. Before the advent of widespread environmental control technology, the planet occasionally experienced droughts. The Mon Calamari responded to these droughts by entering a state of suspended animation within the exposed seabeds.

Republic Era

High Republic Era

During the High Republic Era, Mon Cala was the site of a civil war, which inspired the Mon Calamari Iana Percei to depart from the world. Around 392 BBY, a dispute over territory occurred on Mon Cala, prompting the arrival of Jedi Creighton Sun and Char-Ryl-Roy. Republic official Orlen Mollo, a Quarren native to Mon Cala, also arrived and successfully resolved the dispute through negotiation. In 238 BBY, Senator Ghirra Starros of the Republic undertook a diplomatic trip to Mon Cala, accompanied by her six-year-old daughter Avon. However, Avon stole an escape pod and flew around in it. Between 235 BBY and 232 BBY, a summit took place on Mon Cala, attended by Avon. The summit lasted for at least one month, during which Avon consumed only joppa stew because it was the only dish her droid J-6 was programmed to prepare, leading to Avon's aversion to the food.

During her tenure, Supreme Chancellor Lina Soh aimed to establish a new treaty between the Quarren and Mon Calamari. Additionally, a Jedi outpost was established on Mon Cala. The outpost was constructed on a raft made of coralite with kelp attached to its underside. The outpost served as a reef-like habitat for local wildlife. At that time, the planet was governed by a Mon Calamari named Shenrick, who had not anticipated becoming monarch due to being the third-born son. Ascending to the throne after a tragic event, he ended his affair with Captain Third Class Ghal Tarpfen to protect his reputation.

Clone Wars

The Mon Calamari and Quarren were on opposing sides of the battle

During the Clone Wars, General Grievous launched invasions on numerous planets and imposed blockades on vital hyperspace routes leading to planets such as Mon Calamari within a single month.

Two years later, the eighty-second King of Mon Cala, Yos Kolina, was murdered as part of a Separatist scheme to incite unrest among the populace. While his young son, Prince Lee-Char, was intended to inherit the mantle, the Quarren, led by Nossor Ri, refused to acknowledge him as their leader due to the prince's youth and inexperience. As tensions escalated, Count Dooku dispatched commander Riff Tamson to prevent any compromise between the factions, while the Galactic Republic sent Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala. Upon Nossor Ri's delivery of his ultimatum, the Quarren departed from Coral City and formally allied with the Separatists, while the Mon Calamari aligned themselves with the Republic, who deployed a company of Clone SCUBA troopers along with Jedi Master Kit Fisto and Ahsoka Tano.

Having planned for civil war well in advance, the Quarren launched a surprise attack on the Mon Calamari forces. The Confederacy deployed a substantial force of AQ-series battle droids to bolster the Quarren assault, pushing the Mon Calamari militia to the brink of defeat. However, Republic forces arrived to turn the tide, albeit at a heavy cost for the Mon Calamari, leading to the Quarren's retreat to regroup. A civil war ensued, with Tamson leading the Separatists against Prince Lee-Char and his general, Gial Ackbar.

The Quarren soon returned with a formidable creature known as the Hydroid Medusa, a cyborg jellyfish resistant to blasters and lightsabers. The Mon Calamari forces were quickly decimated, compelling Lee-Char to order a retreat to the caves. Following the cessation of fighting, Dooku instructed Tamson to gather the Mon Calamari population and relocate them to internment camps for forced slavery. Ri attempted to protest, but his efforts were futile.

The Gungan Grand Army came to the aid of the Mon Calamari

Lee-Char determined that the best course of action was to escape with his Republic allies aboard Senator Amidala's starship. However, Tamson anticipated this move and detonated the ship as the group reached the surface. Realizing that it would take too long for clone forces to arrive, the group split up to protect the prince. The Jedi High Council contacted Jar Jar Binks to persuade Boss Lyonie to deploy the Gungan Grand Army to support the Mon Calamari cause. Binks convinced Lyonie to approve the plan, informing him that Senator Amidala required their assistance.

Meanwhile, Skywalker destroyed the Mon Cala central planetary scanner mast, drawing Tamson's attention. Tamson then ordered his forces to attack Skywalker and his small group. Gungan forces then arrived, shifting the momentum of the battle. Tamson ordered all his troops to the suspected location of the prince and deployed the Trident-class assault ships to eliminate many soldiers. Skywalker and Ackbar managed to disable the ship, but not in time to secure victory. All Republic forces, except Tano and Lee-Char, were captured and interrogated to reveal the prince's location.

Prince Lee-Char killed Confederate leader Riff Tamson

To regain the Quarren's trust, the prince decided to liberate the prisoners so that they could overpower their captors and unite the people of Mon Cala in a single revolt. Meanwhile, Ri questioned the battle's progress, to which Tamson revealed his plan to seize the Mon Cala throne for himself, as part of an agreement with Dooku prior to the battle. In the throne room, Tamson expected Lee-Char to grant him the power of ruler, but the prince instead denounced him, prompting Tamson to order his execution.

Just before the prince's execution, he was rescued by Ri, who formally withdrew from the Confederacy and betrayed Tamson. Together with their new allies, the Republic engaged in a final battle against Tamson's forces. Tamson personally confronted Lee-Char and confessed to assassinating Kolina. However, before Tamson could deliver a fatal blow to the prince, Lee-Char decapitated him with his explosive knife. With the Republic victorious and the Quarren and Mon Calamari united, Prince Lee-Char was crowned as the King of Mon Cala. At some point, Jedi General Saesee Tiin participated in another engagement known as the Battle of Mon Calamari.

Imperial Era

Invasion of Mon Cala

King Lee-Char negotiating with Telvar

Following the rise of the Galactic Empire, Char's government fell under the influence of a mysterious Jedi named Ferren Barr, who inspired them to reject the Empire's oppressive terms. The Empire dispatched Moff Wilhuff Tarkin aboard the Sovereign to negotiate with King Lee-Char. Tarkin sent Ambassador Telvar to engage in discussions with Lee-Char, who was displeased with the Empire's deal to sell kelpite strand beam at a reduced price. The king was also concerned about the Imperial military's presence during a time of peace. Telvar pledged to raise these issues with his superiors and departed.

Suspecting the involvement of a Jedi, Darth Vader and three Inquisitors arrived to locate Barr. Commander Ackbar intercepted the group, refusing to accept Vader's explanation for visiting the planet. At that moment, Telvar's shuttle was sabotaged and destroyed, resulting in the deaths of all aboard. Tarkin interpreted this as an act of rebellion and deployed forces. Lee-Char then warned Barr of the impending Imperial attack.

The Empire arrives on Mon Cala

Back with Vader, Mon Calamari and Quarren troopers launched an attack on him and his Inquisitors. The Inquisitors eliminated all the troopers and advanced toward the palace under Vader's orders. Inside the palace, Ackbar and Raddus consulted with the king, who instructed them to defend each hemisphere of the planet. Meanwhile, Lee-Char attempted to negotiate a ceasefire with Tarkin, but Tarkin refused, stating that the Mon Calamari had destroyed an Imperial asset. Barr then urged Lee-Char to take drastic measures and resist Imperial demands, just as the Inquisitors breached the palace.

The Ninth Sister interrogated Lee-Char about Barr's location, but the king remained silent. Suddenly, large creatures began wreaking havoc across the battlefield, generating waves large enough to sweep away Imperial forces. The Inquisitors were separated from Lee-Char but managed to obtain the necessary location. Vader found himself in the Great Ungeness Trench, where he fought off a squid-like creature before being rescued by the Inquisitors. The group traveled to Barr's cave refuge in an Imperial submarine.

Meanwhile, Ackbar launched an attack on Colonel Bergon's aerial landing platform. Ackbar attacked the base from the rear with missiles fired from aquatic vehicles, preventing Bergon from mounting a defense. The colonel was killed during the attack, infuriating Tarkin.

Barr and his acolytes prepared to relocate to Bel City but were intercepted by Vader and the Inquisitors. Many acolytes perished while slowing down Vader, allowing the rest to escape. Meanwhile, Tarkin received news that the battles were turning in his favor. However, Tarkin remained concerned and devised a plan to end the invasion. Then, Raddus emerged with the Mon Cala Mercantile Fleet. Raddus had the fleet link together and combine shields, repelling any Imperial assault.

The Purge troopers execute Order 66 on orders from Barr

Vader and the Inquisitors tracked Barr and his acolytes to Bel City, but Vader was ordered to leave in order to capture King Lee-Char. The Inquisitors and the Purge Troopers intercepted the acolytes at a landing platform, killing one and cornering Barr and the last acolyte, Verla. However, Barr activated the inhibitor chips in the heads of the purge troopers, causing them to execute Order 66 and turn on the Inquisitors. The troopers killed the Tenth Brother as Barr and Verla escaped.

Meanwhile, Vader arrived at the Royal Command Bunker, where he eliminated the guards and captured Lee-Char. Tarkin ordered Vader to take the king to a window as Tarkin ordered the orbital bombardment of the planet's northern hemisphere by the Star Destroyers. However, Vader was interrupted by Barr, who confronted Vader and prepared to duel him. Simultaneously, Raddus received word that Zeran Town had been destroyed but ordered his troops to continue fighting, as the southern hemisphere was not yet targeted.

Barr duels with Vader

As Vader and Barr dueled, Barr revealed that he was responsible for assassinating Telvar to instigate the invasion. Shocked, Lee-Char ordered all forces to stand down and requested to surrender to Tarkin. Tarkin accepted but continued the bombardment, now targeting the southern hemisphere. Raddus decided it was time to act. He disconnected his cruisers and charged the Imperial blockade. Three cruisers breached the blockade, while two were destroyed.

Vader overpowered Barr and killed him as the purge troopers arrived to arrest Lee-Char. Lee-Char told Vader that Mon Cala would rise up and fight the Empire again, but Vader dismissed this, believing it to be the end of Mon Cala.

Galactic Civil War

During the war, Mon Cala was designated as an Alliance safe world despite the Imperial occupation. It was included in a map of the galaxy with a legend listing the various Alliance safe worlds, starfighter hubs at level five or higher, rebel operations sectors and regional headquarters, and shadow planets with deep-space caches. The map was later incorporated into The Rebel Files.

The rebels were attacked by the Empire on an island

Following the Imperial invasion, the Empire seized control of the planet and initiated an occupation. During the occupation after the Battle of Scarif, the Heroes of Yavin traveled with Admiral Ackbar to an island on Mon Cala to discuss mutiny plans with Regent Dors Urtya. However, the discussion was interrupted by stormtroopers, forcing the rebels to flee. This convinced Urtya that involving Mon Cala in the war against the Empire was too perilous.

Later, while orbiting Mon Cala, Leia Organa, a member of the Heroes of Yavin, devised a plan to rescue King Lee-Char from prison on Strokill Prime to rally Mon Cala to the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Organa successfully persuaded the Alliance High Command to approve her plan.

The rebels infiltrated the Moncaladrome with the objective of kidnapping Moff Tan Hubi of the sector, so that Tunga Arpagion, a Clawdite hired by the rebels, could impersonate Hubi while the rebels freed the king. Meanwhile, C-3PO and R2-D2 were already in the opera house to serve beverages to the guests. However, the beverage given to Hubi was drugged, causing him to rush to the bathroom. The rebels were waiting for him and knocked him out as he entered. The rebels escaped the Moncaladrome and arrived at their refuge, where Arpagion shapeshifted into Hubi. The group then went their separate ways.

Queen Trios and Urtya grew suspicious of Hubi's behavior

The imposter Hubi showed up to the opera performance behind schedule and took a seat alongside Queen Trios from Shu-Torun and Urtya. Arpagion, accompanied by 3PO, made an effort to imitate the moff, but occasionally slipped up. The opera's intermission soon arrived, presenting 3PO and Arpagion with a challenge to maintain their disguise. Arpagion relied on 3PO to provide him with appropriate lines during conversations with other attendees. The Clawdite succeeded in confusing the guests, and he sustained his portrayal of the Moff as the opera continued.

Arpagion and the droids escape the stormtroopers

As the opera drew to a close, Arpagion was relieved that the impersonation was finally over. However, 3PO informed him that the Strokill Prime rebels were not yet prepared, necessitating an extension of their charade. To achieve this, the fake Moff, R2, and 3PO ascended the stage, ready to perform a well-known poem. While 3PO and Arpagion were reciting the poem, stormtroopers stormed into the opera house, declaring that the Moff on stage was a fraud. A staff member then initiated a "power outage," allowing Arpagion and the droids to make their escape amidst the general shock.

The group sought refuge in a dressing room, searching for new disguises as the audience pursued them. Arpagion transformed into a Mon Calamari, while the droids attempted to dress themselves. Their respite was brief, as the crowd reached their location and forced their way in, compelling the Clawdite and the droids to flee the Moncaladrome on their boat. Subsequently, Urtya instructed his guards to hunt them down.

Upon returning to the refuge, the remaining rebels arrived with news of King Lee-Char's passing. However, the rebels had managed to record his final words and intended to broadcast them to the people of Mon Cala. Their plan was thwarted by Urtya and his guards, who demanded that Organa surrender the recording. Organa refused and attempted to persuade Urtya to join her, but Urtya instead stunned her and seized the recording. Urtya ordered the rebels to depart, believing it was the most he could offer.

The Mon Calamari attacked the Imperials on the Mercantile Fleet cruisers

Following this, Urtya swam down to The Regency, where he initiated a transmission to the Mercantile Fleet. Urtya commanded that the broadcast be played on all Star Cruisers within the fleet. The broadcast contained the dying words of King Lee-Char to his people. Lee-Char questioned why the Mon Calamari were subjected to the aristocratic rule of the Empire and urged his people to reclaim their pride and their fleet. He bid his final farewell before being fatally shot by stormtroopers. The Mon Calamari then turned against their Imperial leaders and launched an attack on their ships, instigating a mutiny. However, the Mon Calamari ships were still unarmed when the Imperial fleet arrived to suppress the uprising.

The rebels come to Mon Cala's aid

The Imperial fleet established a blockade, prepared to annihilate any vessel attempting to breach it. Admiral Tyrus Meori dispatched TIE bombers to inflict damage on the unarmed fleet. The Millennium Falcon was the only armed ship available until Admiral Ackbar emerged from hyperspace with the Alliance Fleet. Ackbar directed the fleet to safeguard the Mon Calamari cruisers, recognizing their potential to become the navy the Rebellion desperately needed.

Ackbar required time to coordinate an escape for the Mercantile Fleet and instructed the Falcon to buy him that time. Rebel and Imperial starfighters engaged in starfighter combat to protect the fleet. Simultaneously, Ackbar transmitted an inspiring message to the fleet and ordered the cruisers to transmit all of their data. Ackbar then contacted Pysk Lila aboard the Aurora Flare.

Ackbar requested Lila's voluntary participation in a mission that would cost her life. Lila affirmed her willingness to sacrifice herself to save the fleet. Ackbar expressed his gratitude for her service and issued her orders. As the Aurora Flare advanced towards Meori's Star Destroyer, the cruiser sustained heavy damage, but the Imperials fell directly into Ackbar's trap. Meori then discovered that Lila's cruiser was laden with coaxium and commanded the fleet to cease firing. However, it was too late; the Aurora Flare' exploded, creating a breach in the Imperial blockade. Seizing the opportunity, Ackbar ordered the fleet to jump to hyperspace, enabling the Mercantile fleet to escape the Empire.

Back at the Regency, Urtya's aide reported the impending arrival of the Imperial fleet and thanked the Regent for his leadership. A shot from an Imperial Star Destroyer obliterated the Regency, along with Urtya.

Mon Cala was among the worlds Emperor Palpatine intended to target following the completion of the second Death Star, which he planned to use to crush the rebel stronghold and annihilate the Rebellion through sheer terror. Following the destruction of the battle station, Mon Cala was one of numerous worlds attacked during Operation: Cinder.

Titan Squadron attacked the refueling pods above Mon Cala

After the Battle of Endor, the New Republic emerged from the Rebel Alliance, with Mon Cala joining the Republic. In an attempt to divert New Republic forces away from Project Starhawk, Titan Squadron plotted to attack the planet and decimate Mon Cala's defense forces. Titan Squadron was tasked with destroying refueling pods during their initial assault and then targeting any civilian starships attempting to flee. The Empire hoped this would lure out Anvil Squadron. Titan Squadron was instructed to execute the attack swiftly and avoid escalating into a major battle. Titan Three was placed in command of the operation.

Shortly thereafter, Titan Squadron arrived above Mon Cala and deployed from their Quasar Fire-class cruiser carrier. The squadron swiftly attacked the fuel pods, destroying many in an attempt to provoke enemy response. Anvil Squadron arrived to counter the Imperials, having been alerted to the attack. The two squadrons engaged in a dogfight over the planet, until Titan Squadron succeeded in defeating the New Republic forces. However, Anvil Leader requested reinforcements.

Titan Squadron then shifted its focus to the next target: civilian transports attempting to escape towards Mon Cala's planetary defenses. However, reinforcements for Anvil Squadron soon arrived and engaged the Imperials. Titan Squadron destroyed two of the transports as more reinforcements arrived, forcing Titan Squadron to proceed to the next target.

The squadron was ordered to attack a hospital ship carrying medical supplies for the New Republic. During the attack, Anvil Squadron reappeared, this time with their flagship, the Silver Coronet. Titan Squadron then turned its attention to the Silver Coronet in an attempt to eliminate it. Titan Three led the assault on the MC75 Star Cruiser. Titan Squadron destroyed the star cruiser's shields with TIE bombers launching a bombardment of the cruiser. The Imperial forces successfully destroyed the Silver Coronet, compelling Anvil Squadron to retreat back to Mon Cala.

Skywalker's dream

In Luke Skywalker's dream in 34 ABY on Ahch-To, in which he imagined an alternate reality where he had not joined the Rebel Alliance and instead remained on Tatooine and married Camie Marstrap, the Empire employed the Death Star to destroy not only Alderaan, but also Mon Cala and Chandrila.

First Order-Resistance War

Aftab Ackbar inserts a shell into the mouth of the statue

Following the Battle of Crait, General Organa's Resistance was in dire need of rebuilding. Seeking to reconstruct the Resistance navy, General Organa and a group of Resistance operatives embarked on a mission to Mon Cala, aiming to persuade the King to contribute his people and their vessels to the Resistance cause. Upon Organa's arrival on the planet, she was confronted by Ri, who threatened her with death for the devastation she had inflicted on his people. However, the late Admiral Ackbar's son, Aftab Ackbar, intervened to quell the conflict. He embraced Organa and accompanied her to the Mourning Shrines to honor his father.

The Mourning Shrines comprised numerous large statues of Mon Calamari heroes. Aftab and Organa discussed the legacy of Admiral Ackbar and the purpose of her visit. Meanwhile, Rey and her companions awaited Organa, with Rey growing increasingly impatient due to her absence from the action of the First Order-Resistance War.

Back at Dac City, the Resistance prepared to meet with King Ech-Char, a descendant of the late Lee-Char. Aftab cautioned Organa that the king might not be receptive to their cause, but Organa remained optimistic. As Aftab had predicted, the king was unwilling to join Organa's Resistance due to the lingering wounds of the previous war. The disgruntled Quarren and Mon Calamari present at the meeting expressed their dissatisfaction with Organa's plea, prompting the king to adjourn the meeting until the following day.

Rey fought Arkay-Nine in the Ancient Rite of Passage

Subsequently, while Rey, Rose Tico, and Chewbacca were loading the Falcon, a Quarren mob attacked the trio. The trio engaged in hand-to-hand combat against the Quarren, incapacitating many of them. Meanwhile, a probe droid recorded the altercation and transmitted it to Ri's assistant, Chadkol Gee, who contacted General Armitage Hux of the First Order and revealed the Resistance's presence on Mon Cala.

Following the fight, the Resistance operatives were put on trial for their alleged crimes. At the Royal Throne Chamber, General Organa attempted to plead their case before the king, who served as the judge. Aftab defended them but became embroiled in a heated argument with Ri, prompting Organa to intervene. Gee proposed that the Resistance's fate be determined through the Ancient Rite of Challenge at the Sacred Arena of Salka'a. Rey agreed to fight Gee's AQ-series battle droid, Arkay-Nine, in exchange for her friends' freedom.

At the arena, Rey and the droid engaged in a duel, exchanging blows. The droid gained the upper hand and attempted to shoot Rey, but she deflected the shot and ordered the audience in the stands to evacuate. Arkay-Nine was about to deliver the final blow when Tico shot off the droid's head. However, this violated the law prohibiting outside interference, forcing the king to banish the Resistance operatives.

As the Resistance prepared to depart for the Falcon on a shuttle, a Quarren saboteur bombed the shuttle before it could take off. However, Rey used the Force to prevent crates from crushing Aftab and the Resistance. Rey and Tico then pursued the saboteur through the streets of Dac City, until Tico knocked him out with a speeder.

The Mon Cala fleet escaped the First Order

The First Order navy soon arrived at Mon Cala to punish its people. General Organa swiftly arranged a meeting with Ech-Char and presented evidence that the First Order had arrived after being contacted by Gee. Gee confessed to his actions, citing his love for his planet as the motivation. Organa urged the king to unite and reestablish the old alliance, arguing that providing the Mon Calamari vessels to the Resistance was the only way to ensure Mon Cala and the galaxy could resist the First Order. King Ech-Char agreed to aid the Resistance and donate the ships, while Ri resolved to rectify the problems Gee had created.

Onboard a Resurgent-class Star Destroyer, an officer reported to General Hux that a ship was approaching them. Ri was attempting to buy the Mon Cala fleet a window of escape with his Mon Calamari fighter. He distracted the First Order fighters long enough to provide that window of escape but sacrificed his life in the process. Hux recognized the distraction and quickly ordered the fleet to move. Aftab led the fleet from his cruiser and ordered the vessels to quickly jump to hyperspace. The Mon Cala fleet would be essential to rebuilding the Resistance while the First Order punished Mon Cala.

Government

The monarchy

The monarch of Mon Cala was given many duties and power as ruler

Mon Cala was governed by a monarchy headed by a king. The king served as the Supreme Commander of the Mon Cala planetary defense services and wielded political authority over the planet. In addition to his military and political powers, the king was tasked with maintaining peace between the Mon Calamari and Quarren people, who had historically maintained a fragile coexistence. During Lee-Char's imprisonment by the Empire, Dors Urtya served as the regent of Mon Cala.

The Court Of Justice served as the judicial branch of the Mon Cala monarchy. Cases were presented before the king in the Royal Throne Chamber, where he acted as the judge. During the trials, each side was given the opportunity to present their arguments before the king rendered a final decision.

The military

The mercantile fleet was refitted into warships for the exodus from Mon Cala

The king also commanded Mon Cala's military forces, which consisted of an army and a navy. Traditionally, the king fought alongside his troops on the battlefield, bolstering their morale. Both Quarren and Mon Calamari could serve in the army. The Mon Calamari Guard served as the personal troops for the monarchy and consisted of Mon Calamari troopers. The Quarren also formed their own divisions, including the Quarren warriors, who fought alongside the Mon Calamari.

The navy comprised the Mon Cala Mercantile Fleet, which was initially unarmed but could be converted into a military asset. During the Empire's occupation, the fleet was armed and transformed into warships known as the "Mon Cala Exodus Fleet". The mercantile fleet was later restored as the "Mon Cala Imperial Trade Fleet" under Imperial control. Many of these ships became part of the Alliance to Restore the Republic and saw action throughout the Galactic Civil War.

Locations

Settlements

Dac City was partially submerged above water

A significant portion of the Mon Cala population resided in vast underwater cities, favored by both Quarren and Mon Calamari. Nevertheless, numerous cities, including Dac City, extended above the surface. Many of the cities featured city-ships that served as buildings within the city but could also function as ships. Cities such as Mon Cala city utilized a network of tubes to facilitate access between different locations throughout the city. The capital city and other settlements had city-ships built around large coral formations.

Mon Cala city served as the capital of Mon Cala, where the king resided and ruled from. The capital also contained a city square and a central planetary scanner mast.

Other settlements included Dac City, which housed a palace from which King Lee-Char ruled. Similar to parts of Dac City, New Coral City was a rare city located above water. Towns could also be found on Mon Cala, including Quarren Town, situated in the ocean depths, and Zeran Town, located in the planet's northern regions.

Structures and buildings

Moncaladrome was a opera house that could fit a large audience

Mon Cala was home to an outpost used by the Jedi Order during the High Republic Era. The outpost consisted of a large raft made of coralite, blending with Mon Cala's underwater environment. Kelp dangled from the underside of the outpost, creating a reef-like habitat for sea creatures as it moved with the ocean currents.

Mon Cala city housed the king of Mon Cala in the Mon Calamari Royal Palace, where the king's throne was located in a room used for debates. King Yos Kolina was assassinated in the palace by Riff Tamson, with his son being crowned as the new king shortly thereafter.

The renowned opera house, the Moncaladrome, hosted grand performances, including the "Faluvian cycle" and "The tale of the tragic egg." These plays were performed on a vast multi-level stage before a large audience. Special seating was reserved on the stage for valued guests. The Heroes of Yavin traveled to the Moncaladrome to capture Moff Tan Hubi and utilize his bio-signature during the Galactic Civil War.

Landmarks

Mon Calamari paid respect to the greats of the past at the Mourning Shrines

In the ocean's depths lay a trench known as the Great Ungeness Trench, which was inhabited by a large squid-like creature. Following the Battle of Dac City, Darth Vader descended into the trench and engaged in combat with the creature.

The Sacred Arena of Salka'a was an arena situated between islands, used during the Ancient Rite of Challenge. The arena was constructed from stone, with stone pillars forming the perimeter and serving as stands for the audience. A viewing deck was also available for the king to observe the gladiator fights. During the First Order-Resistance War, Rey fought the droid Arkay-Nine in the arena to save her friends from punishment.

Many Mon Calamari heroes, such as Admiral Ackbar, were commemorated at the Mourning Shrines, an underwater memorial consisting of large statues of these Mon Calamari. The shrines were surrounded by coral and served as a habitat for eels. Visitors could place a shell in the mouths of the statues, where it was believed the soul resided. Aftab visited the statue of his father, Gial, with General Leia Organa, where they paid their respects to the late admiral.

Behind the scenes

Mon Cala made its debut in the premier episode of Season Four of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In Star Wars Legends, Mon Cala first appeared in Death in the Undercity, an adventure supplement for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game published in 1990, where it was referred to as "Calamari."

The Clone Wars

While answering fan questions, The Clone Wars writer and director, Dave Filoni, explained that Mon Cala was given its name in the show because George Lucas believed that "Mon Calamari" should refer to the people, not the planet. Filoni acknowledged that this contradicted Star Wars Legends material, but the writers adhered to Lucas's decision. In the same video, Filoni also revealed that Mon Cala city was originally intended to be named "Dac city," but that reference was removed from the script.

An unfinished story for Star Wars: The Clone Wars featured a return to Mon Cala, in which Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker revisited the planet to meet with King Lee-Char. During the story, they would have discovered that Quarren leader, Nossor Ri, had been murdered and Senator Tikkes had been appointed as a provisional leader. Padmé would have seized this opportunity to garner Quarren support for the removal of Chancellor Palpatine from office, but she was ultimately unsuccessful.
