Quasar Fire-class cruiser-carrier

The Quasar Fire-class cruiser-carrier, also designated as the Quasar Fire-class bulk cruiser, or more simply as the Quasar-class carrier or the Imperial light carrier, represented a starship design manufactured by the SoroSuub Corporation. It served within the Galactic Empire's Imperial Navy, functioning as both a starfighter carrier and a mobile operational headquarters.

The SoroSuub Corporation, a shipbuilding enterprise situated on Sullust, was responsible for the construction of the Quasar Fire-class cruiser-carrier. Its triangular form resembled other dagger-shaped Imperial spacecraft, most notably Star Destroyers. However, in contrast to Star Destroyers, the bridge was positioned at the foremost point, while the hangars were located at the base. According to a report from Mid-Rim Shipwrights, the structural soundness of the Quasar Fire's spaceframe was questionable, with susceptibility to micro-fractures occurring during transitions from hyperspace to realspace.

The Quasar Fire-class measured 340 meters in overall length. Its quartet of hangar bays provided capacity for up to 96 [starfighters](/article/starfighter]; however, certain Imperial light carriers operated with reduced complements, such as ten TIE/sa bombers and four TIE/ln space superiority starfighters. The Empire utilized these carriers in orbit around conquered planets, enabling swift deployment of fighters as needed. The Empire fielded two distinct iterations of the Quasar Fire: the Quasar Fire I-class and the Quasar Fire II-class.

History

A Quasar Fire-class cruiser-carrier, identified as Imperial Cruiser 07200823, was employed at the Carida Academy. During Han Solo's tenure as a cadet at the Academy, he, along with other cadets, received assignment to pilot the cruiser, transporting TIE fighter pilots for a training exercise.

In the year 3 BBY, the Spectres, in conjunction with Cham Syndulla of the Free Ryloth Movement, seized a Quasar Fire-class cruiser-carrier from orbit above Ryloth for the burgeoning rebellion. Nearby Imperial forces moved to regain control of the vessel, dispatching TIE fighters and a landing craft to board it; however, the rebels successfully thwarted this attempt by utilizing the ship's point-defense cannons to eliminate all opposition. They subsequently managed to destroy the Arquitens-class cruiser escorting the carrier over Ryloth before making their escape.

This captured vessel became the flagship of Phoenix Cell within the early rebellion, renamed the Phoenix Nest. It accommodated their RZ-1 A-wing interceptors and even received a new paint scheme to reflect its allegiance. Following an attack by Imperial forces, the starship retreated with the rest of the rebel fleet to the planet Atollon. After the formation of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, it integrated into the Alliance Fleet, with Colonel Anj Zavor advising Mon Mothma to acquire additional escort carriers from the Empire. Regrettably, the Phoenix Nest met its end at the Battle of Atollon, sacrificed by its commander, Jun Sato, in a ramming maneuver against Admiral Konstantine's Interdictor-class heavy cruiser to facilitate Ezra Bridger's escape in the Kom'rk-class fighter/transport Nightbrother from Grand Admiral Thrawn's blockade and secure reinforcements. During the initial stages of the rebellion, one Quasar Fire-class met its demise at the hands of two Sphyrna-class Hammerhead corvettes in orbit around a terrestrial world.

At least one Quasar Fire-class cruiser-carrier was stationed at the Rebel Alliance's Mako-Ta Space Docks. Following the escape of surviving vessels from the Empire's attack on the base, Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa utilized the cruiser-carrier to rescue Han Solo and R2-D2, who found themselves stranded within a damaged X-wing. With Solo safely aboard, the cruiser-carrier fled to the moon Corosi 7, but damage sustained limited it to a single hyperspace jump. Consequently, the rebels resorted to landing on Nar Shaddaa in search of passage aboard the Volt Cobra, the vessel belonging to Sana Starros.

During the Galactic Civil War, the Imperial Quasar Fire-class cruiser-carrier Squall endured an assault from a squadron of Rebel RZ-1 A-wing interceptors. A squadron of TIE/sa bombers defended it. Furthermore, the Pursuant and the Stronghold served in the Imperial Navy at some point during the Empire's reign.

Following the Battle of Endor, a Quasar Fire-class orbited the planet Mon Cala, conducting hit-and-fade strikes under the command of Admiral Rae Sloane. This tactic aimed to draw the New Republic Defense Fleet away from the Nadiri Dockyards in order to strike at Project Starhawk.

In the aftermath of Endor, the elite 204th Imperial Fighter Wing, known as Shadow Wing, operated the Quasar-class cruiser Aerie in various missions, including the attack on the EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigate Hellion's Dare, pursuing it through the Oridol Cluster. Although the Aerie sustained damage during the engagement, the Hellion's Dare was destroyed, and the Aerie successfully retreated for subsequent repairs. A year later, in 5 ABY, the Aerie was present at the planet Jarbanov, where Shadow Wing attacked a colony due to its allegiance to the New Republic Defense Force. It later appeared in the Cerberon system within the Deep Core, participating in a major campaign against New Republic forces stationed there.

During the New Republic's siege of the Kuat Drive Yards, Blade Squadron launched an assault, destroying a light carrier during the battle's concluding phase.

Behind the scenes

The Quasar Fire-class cruiser-carrier made its debut in the Star Wars Rebels episode "Homecoming," with its official designation first appearing in the StarWars.com Databank. The ship's origins trace back to the Star Wars Legends novel The Truce at Bakura, published in 1994, under the name Quasar Fire-class bulk cruiser/escort carrier, and it received its first visual representation in the Legends video game Star Wars: Rebellion.
