Tenth Brother

Once known as Prosset Dibs, the Tenth Brother was a Force-sensitive male Miraluka who became a member of the Inquisitorius during the Galactic Empire's early years of power. Before Palpatine, the Emperor, ascended to power, Dibs held the esteemed position of Jedi Master within the Jedi Order. During the Clone Wars, Dibs was dispatched on a mission to Hissrich, where his convictions regarding the Jedi's role as keepers of peace clashed with their evolving duties as commanders in the Grand Army of the Republic, which served the Galactic Republic. Following his return from Hissrich to the Jedi Temple located on Coruscant, Dibs faced a trial presided over by Grand Master Yoda and the Jedi High Council for his attempt to murder Mace Windu. While Dibs anticipated a capital sentence, Windu advocated for rehabilitation, leading to that outcome.

After the Great Jedi Purge concluded, Dibs joined the Inquisitorius, a group of hunters of Jedi under the command of Darth Vader, a Sith Lord who was the Emperor's apprentice. He became known as the "Tenth Brother." He went with Vader, the Ninth Sister, and the Sixth Brother to the world of Mon Cala with the goal of capturing Ferren Barr, a Padawan who had survived the Purge. Even though the Inquisitorius had rejected their allegiance to the Jedi Order, Barr used mind control to make the Purge Troopers carry out Order 66 on the fallen Jedi, including the Tenth Brother, who was fatally shot by the clones amidst the resulting conflict.

Biography

Mission on Hissrich

In the wake of the First Battle of Geonosis, the Jedi High Council aimed to uncover the truth surrounding the Separatist operation taking place on the planet Hissrich. As they assembled a special team for this assignment, Mace Windu handpicked Prosset Dibs, believing that Dibs possessed a remarkable intuition despite his lack of sight. Windu also selected Kit Fisto, a Jedi Master, and Rissa Mano, a Jedi Knight, to join his team. He was of the opinion that Dibs would offer valuable insights and reconnaissance during the mission.

Prosset Dibs stabbing his lightsaber into an Octuptarra tri-droid

Upon their arrival on Hissrich aboard the T-6 shuttle Westwind, Dibs shared with Windu his unsettling feeling in the Force, as well as his conviction that the teachings and beliefs of the Jedi Order were being put to the test, a sentiment Windu shared. Around the same time, they observed a group of battle droids patrolling the area. Windu instructed Fisto and Dibs to flank the droids from above, while he and Mano approached from the front. They swiftly engaged the droids, and Dibs leaped onto an Octuptarra tri-droid, bisecting it with his lightsaber. A B2-series super battle droid then attempted to ambush him, but Fisto intervened, dispatching the droid from behind. As Dibs thanked Fisto, the Jedi were suddenly confronted by the native people of the planet.

Dibs and the rest of the team were guided by the natives into a network of caves hidden beneath Hissrich's surface, ultimately leading them to the natives' settlement. Dibs and his companions believed that the natives had brought them there for a specific purpose, suspecting that they possessed knowledge of the Separatists' plans for Hissrich. As the Separatists drilled into the planet, their forces invaded the caves where the Jedi and the natives were located. Windu instructed the others to defend the natives while he dealt with the destroyers. Their mercenary commander AD-W4 then engaged Windu, and when the other Jedi joined the fray, the Separatist Harvester droids intervened, separating Windu and Mano from the rest of the squad. Dibs continued to fight alongside Fisto to safeguard the inhabitants.

Dibs and Fisto found themselves in the darkness of the cave, using their lightsabers to illuminate their surroundings. Dibs insisted that they tend to the wounded inhabitants, a sentiment Fisto shared. However, sensing danger nearby, they were confronted by a Milodon. Dibs slashed through its side with his lightsaber, and Fisto joined the attack immediately. Together, they continued to strike the creature with their lightsabers until it collapsed. After killing the creature, they discovered the remains of several deceased indigenous inhabitants. Alarmed by the number of deaths on Hissrich, Dibs began to question the Jedi's ability to maintain peace and protect others, to which Fisto countered by stating that casualties were inevitable in war and that the Jedi were now striving to mitigate the loss of life. Dibs, however, remained unconvinced.

Betraying Windu

Prosset Dibs challenging Mace Windu

After reuniting with Windu and Mano, Dibs confronted Windu, expressing his disagreement with the Jedi's involvement in the Clone Wars. He leveled several accusations against both Windu and the Council, ranging from indifference towards collateral damage to the corruption of Jedi doctrine, and proceeded to physically assault Windu, who refused to entertain Dibs' claims, dismissing them as "bold accusations" and "grand inquisitions." Dibs then ignited his lightsaber, intending to end Windu's life. Though he felt responsible for failing Dibs, Windu activated his own lightsaber to defend himself, leading to a duel between the two Jedi Masters.

As they fought, Windu implored Dibs to cease his attack, reminding him that they were essentially brothers, having both been chosen to walk the path of the Jedi. Dibs rejected all of Windu's words as lies and declared his intent to no longer serve the Jedi Order, choosing instead to follow his own path. The duel continued until Windu used the Force to push Dibs to the ground and disarm him. After a moment of contemplation, Windu decided that the Jedi Council should determine Dibs' fate and therefore placed him under arrest. Leaving Dibs confined in the Westwind, the Jedi proceeded to complete their mission.

Trial under the Jedi

Prosset Dibs on trial

A shackled Prosset Dibs was subsequently brought back to the Jedi Temple. Standing trial for betraying his team and attacking Windu—a Jedi Master and a general in the Republic Military—Dibs stood before the High Council accused of heresy and insubordination. He refused to acknowledge any wrongdoing in his actions and reiterated his belief that the Council was distorting the Jedi doctrine for their own selfish purposes. Ultimately, he was found guilty of treason, and though Dibs expected to be sentenced to death, Windu, who harbored his own reservations about the Jedi's new military responsibilities, urged his colleagues to show mercy.

He argued that the Jedi had a duty to help rehabilitate members of the Order who strayed from the light and requested that Dibs be placed on probation, confined to working in the Jedi Archives, where he hoped the fallen Jedi would reconsider his views. Dibs, however, remained skeptical of Windu's sincerity and, as his former friend left the chamber, taunted him that his hubris would lead to his downfall. Windu later confided in Mano his concern for Dibs and the future of the Jedi Order, but the experience ultimately renewed his faith in the Jedi's role as protectors of all peoples across the galaxy.

Fall to the Dark Side

In 19 BBY, the Jedi Order was nearly annihilated by Order 66, a secret command embedded in the clone troopers that ordered the execution of all Jedi. Concurrently, the Galactic Republic was replaced by the Galactic Empire, which sought to eliminate all remaining Jedi. Dibs succumbed to the dark side of the Force and eventually joined the Inquisitorius, a group of fallen Jedi turned agents for Darth Sidious. Dibs was given the title of Tenth Brother and served under the Grand Inquisitor, the head of the Inquisitorius.

Mission to Mon Cala

Battle of Dac City

The Tenth Brother arrives on Mon Cala with the other two Inquisitors

One year after the rise of the Galactic Empire, Tenth Brother was selected by Darth Vader to aid in the search for a potential Jedi influencing the government on Mon Cala. Accompanying Tenth Brother were Sixth Brother, Ninth Sister, and a squad of elite clones known as Purge Troopers. They traveled to Dac City, where negotiations between Ambassador Telvar and King Lee-Char were reaching a stalemate. Upon their arrival, the three Inquisitors were met by Gial Ackbar, the King's chief of Security, at the landing pad. The Mon Calamari demanded to know their purpose, and Vader explained the possible presence of a Jedi on their planet. Ackbar initially dismissed the possibility, but as Telvar departed Dac City, his Lambda-class T-4a shuttle exploded, killing everyone on board. Vader and the Inquisitors bypassed Ackbar and entered the city.

Wilhuff Tarkin, a Moff and Telvar's superior, responded to the assassination by deploying his forces to Mon Cala. Led by Major Rantu, the Imperial forces invaded Dac City, with Vader and the Inquisitors fighting to secure the landing pad. After capturing the landing pad, the Ninth Sister inquired about their next objective. Vader instructed her that they were heading to the palace to question the king about the Jedi. The Tenth Brother then questioned Vader as to why the Jedi would even stay in the palace after Tarkin's forces came down and Vader told him that the king remained there. The four fought their way into the palace, where Ninth Sister interrogated the king. However, the king had already initiated the final defensive maneuver, and a school of giant fish-like creatures breached the sea-level, causing a tsunami to engulf the planet's surface. Tenth Brother and the others attempted to withstand the wave, but their efforts were futile, and they were swept away.

Death

Against all odds, Tenth Brother and the other two Inquisitors survived the wave and began searching for Vader aboard an Imperial submarine. They located Vader alive and rescued him. Ninth Sister revealed that she had obtained the location of the Jedi they were seeking from her interrogation of Lee-Char, and they set course for it, determined to capture their target. There, they discovered Jedi Padawan Ferren Barr and his six followers evacuating their hideout. The Jedi and his followers scattered immediately, and one of them, Nipaltoo, attempted to shatter the submarine's windscreen, only to have his helmet crushed by Vader using the Force. Another, Orvek, sacrificed himself to buy them some time.

The Tenth Brother was killed by Purge Troopers in Bel City.

The four continued their pursuit of Barr and his disciples to Bel City, where two more, Stell and Rebb, remained behind to slow them down. Vader then received a transmission from Tarkin, ordering him to capture the king and bring an end to the conflict on Mon Cala. Vader complied and left the Inquisitors and their troopers to find Barr.

The Inquisitors cornered Barr at a dead end, where Sixth Brother bisected Daren, leaving the Jedi and his last disciple, Verla. Barr then confronted them and reminded them of their Jedi past, reciting their original names, including Tenth Brother's. Barr asserted that they would always be Jedi, a claim Ninth Sister rejected. However, Barr was not trying to convince them, but rather the Purge troopers, as they were clones. Before the Inquisitors could comprehend this, Barr used a mind trick on the troopers, instructing them to "execute Order 66." The Purge troopers then turned on the Inquisitors, and despite Tenth Brother's protests, they opened fire. The three Inquisitors began blocking and deflecting the shots back at the manipulated troopers, but the Tenth Brother, caught off guard, was struck in the chest and fell to the floor, dead.

Legacy

Immediately following the Tenth Brother's demise, Barr and Verla jumped with the Force over the fighting and escaped. Determined to avoid a similar fate, Sixth Brother suggested to Ninth Sister that they also leap over the troopers to pursue Barr. However, Ninth Sister instructed him to push them away instead, and the two Inquisitors pushed the troopers with the Force to the side. Sixth Brother severed Ninth Sister's leg, leaving her to fend off the remaining clones.

In the years following the fall of the Galactic Empire, Jedi Master Luke Skywalker traveled the galaxy to rediscover the history of the Jedi Order that had been suppressed by the Empire. In his quest for knowledge, Skywalker learned of the Tenth Brother's existence. During his self-imposed exile on Ahch-To, Skywalker authored a book titled The Secrets of the Jedi, which documented the information he had gathered on his journeys. The Tenth Brother was among several Inquisitors depicted in the book as illustrations, along with information about the Inquisitorius.

Personality and traits

Jedi Master Prosset Dibs

Prosset Dibs was a tall Miraluka male characterized by dark skin, long gray hair, and the absence of eyes. As a Jedi Master, he possessed wisdom and wit, complemented by exceptional hearing and an acute intuition of his surroundings. Consequently, he was held in high regard by his colleague and superior, Mace Windu, who believed Dibs was capable of providing valuable insights and reconnaissance. Dibs himself acknowledged his sharp intellect, attributing his only flaw to his tendency to "speak about it."

Dibs firmly believed in the Jedi's role as peacekeepers, which led to his disagreement with their new responsibilities as warriors and military leaders during the Clone Wars. During a mission on Hissrich, his doubts about their evolving role and the loss of multiple natives, which he felt the Jedi were responsible for and should never have happened in the first place, caused him to lose faith in the Order and the High Council. Eventually, his disillusionment transformed into anger, and he came to believe that the Jedi had not only abandoned their traditions but were also distorting them for their own selfish gain. This prompted Dibs to turn against Mace Windu with the intention of killing him, only to be defeated and arrested.

During his trial before the Jedi Council, Dibs refused to admit any wrongdoing, insisting that he had done nothing wrong and that the Council was to blame for the war and its losses. He reacted with anger to Windu's decision to spare him and his attempts to sympathize with him, believing the other Jedi was simply "patronizing" him and making him an "example of his false benevolence."

The Tenth Brother protests to the Purge troopers after they are told to execute Order 66

Four years later, Dibs, now known as the Tenth Brother, had whiter hair and had since fallen to the dark side of the Force. He became a member of the Inquisitorius, where he adopted his new identity, and was willing to hunt down and kill the Jedi he once respected and fought alongside. The Tenth Brother was observant and assumed that Lee-Char would have left Dac City when Tarkin sent his forces down to Mon Cala. Vader reassured him that Lee-Char remained at the palace. The Tenth Brother was more callous than his former self and openly insulted Mon Cala, describing it as smelling like fish upon his arrival. When the Ninth Sister suggested it was just Sixth Brother, he asserted his ego by saying it was more like fish. When the Purge troopers were manipulated by Barr to turn against the Tenth Brother and the other two, he called them "stupid clones," even though he was trying to keep them on his side. The Purge troopers ultimately fired on him, and he was gunned down in the process.

Powers and abilities

Despite his strength in the Force, Prosset Dibs was ultimately beaten by Mace Windu

Like all Jedi, Prosset Dibs possessed Force-sensitivity. Mace Windu described him as being "as strong in the Force as any Jedi he had ever known." He also demonstrated considerable skill with a lightsaber despite his blindness, effortlessly destroying several battle droids and holding his own against Mace Windu, though he was ultimately disarmed and defeated by the Jedi champion. Dibs is highly skilled in Jar'Kai, since he later gained two shoto lightsabers and is skilled in Form V.

During the Battle of Dac City, the Tenth Brother overpowered the Mon Calamari and Quarren guards while fighting at the landing pad and into the palace. When threatened by a large tsunami, the Tenth Brother and Sixth Brother were unable to withstand it, even with Vader's assistance. At Bel City, Tenth Brother and the other two Inquisitors were betrayed by their Purge troopers, who were forced to do so by their inhibitor chips. The Tenth Brother managed to deflect several blaster shots from the troopers, but was soon struck in the chest and killed.

Equipment

As a Jedi, Prosset Dibs wielded a single-bladed green lightsaber, although following the start of the Clone Wars, the lightsaber was destroyed by Jedi Master Mace Windu during a mission on the planet Hissrich. He wore brown Jedi robes and a black blindfold to cover his empty eye sockets. He also had a black belt around his waist and wore brown boots. Furthermore, he wore beige trousers and had his long hair tied back with a bandanna.

As a member of the Inquisitorius, the Tenth Brother left his eye sockets exposed rather than covered up. Unlike his fellow Inquisitors, he did not wear armor, except for a pair of shoulder-mounted epaulettes in black with the Imperial crest and a pair of black bracers on his forearms. Instead, he opted for a grey robe-like ensemble and cloth wrappings up the length of his arms to a point just above his bicep as well as wrapped around the lower half of his face like a mask. This provided little protection from blasterfire, as demonstrated by his easy death. Furthermore, he did not use the standard double-bladed spinning lightsaber, instead opting for two single-bladed shoto lightsabers, wielded in a reverse grip, making him the only Inquisitor not to use a double-bladed spinning lightsaber, although each shoto had curved hand guards resembling the standard Inquisitor lightsaber.

Behind the scenes

The initial appearance of the Tenth Brother was in the 2017 comic Jedi of the Republic – Mace Windu 1 as Prosset Dibs, with writing by Matt Owens and illustrations by Denys Cowan. He was later identified as Tenth Brother in the 2018 Darth Vader (2017) 14 comic, penned by Charles Soule and illustrated by Giuseppe Camuncoli. The confirmation that the Tenth Brother and Prosset Dibs were the same came in Darth Vader (2017) 16, also written by Soule and illustrated by Camuncoli.
