Law enforcement agency

Divoanddroids The agency responsible for law and order on Coruscant was the Coruscant Security Force. An organization tasked with upholding the law, keeping order, and safeguarding lives and property was known as a law enforcement agency. These organizations were also referred to as a planetary security force, police force, or simply a security force. Typically, police officers or, in some instances, soldiers staffed them, and they were often structured as a paramilitary force or militia, although they were not usually equipped for large-scale warfare. To augment sentient peacekeepers in larger agencies or for smaller outposts and space stations, police droids were occasionally deployed.

Description

Organizations responsible for upholding laws, maintaining order, and protecting life and property were known as law enforcement agencies, also called police forces or security forces. While some law enforcement agencies also functioned as a military for their local governments, their main purpose was to keep the peace, and they were not equipped for full-scale war.

The Naboo Security Force was a volunteer police

While law enforcement was typically carried out at the local or planetary level, the size, functions, and training of these forces could vary significantly. They could range from a small, volunteer local security force to an agency responsible for protecting an entire, densely urbanized planet, such as the Coruscant Security Force. Some primarily served as bodyguards and elite security forces, such as the Senate Guard, while others were volunteer security and policing corps, like the Royal Security Forces on the planet Naboo. During the Invasion of Naboo, several hundred Royal Guards and police officers formed an underground resistance effort against the Trade Federation Droid Army.

Under the Galactic Republic, the Jedi Order possessed policing authority, enabling them to conduct criminal investigations and make arrests. Some Jedi even gained expertise in local criminal and policing matters. Nevertheless, the Jedi served the Republic as a whole, acting as keepers of the peace and guardians of justice, which meant that the majority of planetary issues were left to local police forces.

The Imperial Security Bureau was established under the Galactic Empire as a secret police force to enforce the New Order throughout the galaxy. Agents such as Kallus were dispatched to assist the Imperial Military in suppressing rebellions, such as the Lothal insurgency.

Law enforcement agencies employed police officers. The majority of them wore some kind of uniform and held military-style ranks. Lower-ranking officers were responsible for tasks such as patrolling their assigned areas, responding to incidents, and conducting preliminary investigations. Higher-ranking officers oversaw groups of officers, produced field reports, carried out investigations, and reported to government leaders. Specialized officers like detectives investigated serious crimes. These detectives were typically seasoned police officers with expertise in conducting in-depth investigations.

Although flesh-and-blood officers were prevalent, police droids were widely used, particularly on densely populated urban planets such as Coruscant or in spaceports, where employing droids was more financially viable. Droids were generally programmed to avoid causing harm unless it was necessary to protect others, in which case they were authorized to use force, even deadly force. Droids were also valuable because they enforced the law impartially and without corruption.
