Bergon

Bergon was a human female who held the rank of colonel within the Galactic Empire during the early years of Imperial rule. In the year 18 BBY, Bergon, working alongside Imperial Security Bureau Commander Jordo and Major Rantu, aided Governor Wilhuff Tarkin in conducting military operations on the aquatic world of Mon Cala. Following the elimination of Rantu's contingent, Bergon spearheaded the offensive against Ackbar's forces, ultimately meeting her end when the skybase under her command was destroyed.

Biography

Bergon was a human female who achieved the rank of colonel in the armed forces of the Galactic Empire. Back in 18 BBY, Bergon found herself on the bridge of the Star Destroyer known as the Sovereign, positioned in orbit around the planet Mon Cala, in the company of Commander Jordo, Major Rantu, and Governor Wilhuff Tarkin. Bergon questioned the reasoning behind planning a complex, multi-stage assault when they could simply utilize the XX-9's to bombard the planet from above. Tarkin responded by stating that they represented an Empire, and the true power of an Empire lay in what it controlled rather than what it destroyed. He further emphasized that Mon Cala was a valuable asset and they had no intention of destroying it. When the shuttle carrying Imperial ambassador Telvar was shot down, resulting in the death of all occupants, Tarkin instructed a lieutenant to inform Bergon that she was to commence her phase of the operation.

Bergon led the second assault aboard her sky-base

Following the Battle of Dac City and the broader Imperial assault on Mon Cala, King of Mon Cala Lee-Char had completely evacuated his people from all surface cities. Subsequently, he deployed massive ocean creatures that breached the water's surface and crashed down near Mon Cala's surface cities, decimating them and all Imperial forces stationed there. Given that Major Rantu was overseeing the invasion from a command center within Dac City, he was presumed lost. Consequently, Tarkin informed Bergon that she would be responsible for the subsequent wave of the assault. Bergon accepted the responsibility, suggesting the deployment of aerial landing platforms to mitigate the risk of another devastating attack on Imperial Military personnel. She acknowledged that conducting an underwater campaign from sky-bases would pose challenges, but assured Tarkin that they would achieve their objective.

After deploying the sky-bases, Bergon directed operations from one situated in the northern hemisphere. Following a conversation with Tarkin, Bergon determined that Raddus was spearheading the resistance and consolidating his reefships in the polar regions of the southern hemisphere. Opting not to divide her forces, she resolved to eliminate Ackbar in the northern hemisphere. Tarkin cautioned her against underestimating Raddus, but she remained confident that the enemy posed no significant threat.

Bergon's skybase explodes, killing her

Before she could even complete her report to Tarkin, Ackbar's forces launched a surprise attack from beneath the waves. Bergon mocked Ackbar for personally leading the assault, ordering an officer to scramble their TIE fighters and asserting that the attacking Mon Calamari would never get close to the base. As the TIEs moved to intercept, Ackbar's forces submerged and approached the sky-base, positioning themselves directly underneath it. Overwhelmed, the TIEs failed to prevent the attackers from launching volleys of missiles that breached the deflector shields. Bergon commanded her crew to shoot down the incoming missiles, but their sheer number overwhelmed the targeting systems. Realizing her fate was sealed, Bergon could only utter "no" as the sky-base exploded in flames, broke apart, and plunged into the sea below, resulting in the deaths of Bergon and her entire crew.

Legacy

Following the demise of Bergon, a lieutenant briefed Tarkin on the situation, explaining how the Mon Cala forces had managed to destroy the sky-base. Annoyed that this military tactic had not been discovered by Commander Jordo and the ISB, Tarkin ordered that Jordo be provided with a set of stormtrooper armor and dispatched to the surface personally. Tarkin then declared his intention to escalate the war, as two additional Star Destroyers arrived in orbit above the planet.

Personality and traits

Bergon, a staunchly militaristic yet ultimately short-sighted tactician, firmly believed in overwhelming force as the most straightforward and effective method for neutralizing any threats to the Empire's authority. As a bold and outspoken officer, she questioned Tarkin's strategies during the pacification of Mon Cala. She preferred to command from a safe distance, avoiding direct involvement in battle.

When tasked with coordinating the next Imperial assault wave from sky-bases, she acknowledged the inherent challenges, while expressing confidence in her forces' ability to accomplish the mission.

She displayed her prejudices against non-humans by referring to the Mon Calamari and Quarren with the derogatory term "finners," and advocated for the devastating orbital bombardment of Mon Cala. She significantly underestimated the Mon Calamari and Ackbar, whom she dismissed as an "idiot" for personally leading his forces into battle. Ultimately, her arrogance led to her downfall when Ackbar's forces overwhelmed her own.

Behind the scenes

Bergon first appeared in the canon 2018 comic book Darth Vader (2017) 13, penned by Charles Soule and illustrated by Giuseppe Camuncoli.
