Chandrila

Chandrila, a planet situated within the Core Worlds region of the galaxy, was the birthplace of the human female, Mon Mothma. Mothma represented her homeworld as a senator in the Senate of the Galactic Republic. Furthermore, it was the planet where Ben Solo was born and raised.

Emperor Sheev Palpatine marked Chandrila as a target for annihilation using his second Death Star. His intention was to utilize the station's devastating superweapon to crush the Rebellion by instilling widespread fear.

After the Battle of Endor occurred in 4 ABY, Chandrila was selected to be the capital of the New Republic. It became the home of the newly established Galactic Senate as a symbol of the old Republic. However, this status was not permanent, as the Republic opted to rotate its capital based on election results.

Description

Chandrila presented as a relatively small planet with a blue-green hue, characterized by tranquil seas and gently sloping hills. The climate was temperate with mild seasons, and severe weather conditions were infrequent.

Hanna City served as the capital city of the planet, housing the Chandrila Senate house, which accommodated the New Republic's Galactic Senate in the months immediately following the Battle of Endor. Other notable locations on Chandrila included the Old Gather-House, the Senate Plaza, and the Silver Sea. A bar was located in the settlement of Junari Point, which was situated a few klicks away from Hanna City.

History

During the Republic

In ancient times, settlers arrived on Chandrila and constructed the Old Gather House. Chandrila joined the Galactic Republic and was recognized as one of the Core Founders. During the [Clone Wars](/article/clone_wars], Mon Mothma served as Chandrila's representative as a senator within the Galactic Senate.

Age of the Empire

During the early rebellion against the Galactic Empire, Chandrila was designated as a safe world by the Alliance to Restore the Republic. A galactic map, detailing Alliance safe worlds, starfighter hubs at level five or higher, rebel operations sectors and regional headquarters, and shadow planets with deep space caches, featured Chandrila. This map later appeared in The Rebel Files. Throughout the Galactic Civil War, Chandrila provided support to the Alliance.

By 1 BBY, Chandrila was among the numerous worlds suffering under Imperial dominance. Mothma, who by that time was the chancellor of the Alliance, acknowledged her homeworld's predicament but believed she could not allow personal feelings to influence the Rebellion's strategic decisions. With countless worlds under Imperial oppression, she could not simply divert resources to assist her own planet. Due to its support of the Rebellion, Chandrila was targeted by the Galactic Empire's second Death Star. Olia Choko considered Chandrila a small planet that was the source of significant ideas.

New Republic Era

Hanna City was the capital of Chandrila and at one point hosted the New Republic Senate.

Following the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, Chandrila was chosen to be the capital of the restored Galactic Republic, also known as the New Republic, which succeeded the Rebel Alliance. The revived Galactic Senate convened in Hanna City. The Queen of the Core Network initiated broadcasts from Chandrila. Imperial prisoners captured in war zones like Coruscant and Akiva were imprisoned on Chandrila. New Republic Starfighter Corps pilots received training at Landing Platform OB-99 near the Silver Sea. At one point, the New Republic's Vanguard Squadron was assigned to aid in the defense of vital planets, including Chandrila.

After Han Solo and Norra Wexley's team liberated a hundred Rebel prisoners from Ashmead's Lock on Kashyyyk, these former prisoners were transported to Chandrila, where they were provided with temporary housing and medical care. Later, the Senate accepted Grand Admiral Rae Sloane's proposal to hold peace talks near Hanna City. Unbeknownst to many, this was a ruse orchestrated by Fleet Admiral Gallius Rax to launch his assault on the New Republic leadership. He used the former prisoners as unwilling assassins, controlling them with inorganic bio-chips implanted in their brains. The resulting Liberation Day attacks were broadcast live on the HoloNet for the entire galaxy to witness. This event significantly damaged morale within the New Republic and paved the way for the Battle of Jakku. The assault also triggered calls to move the New Republic capital to a more secure location. Chandrila was also attacked during Operation: Cinder.

In the final months of the Galactic Civil War, specifically in 5 ABY, the Republic commenced the relocation of the Senate to Nakadia, a world in the Expansion Region, for a one-year term following an Imperial attack. Nevertheless, Chancellor Mothma and several senators, including Princess Leia Organa and Tolwar Wartol, continued to maintain offices on Chandrila. During the Battle of Jakku, Wartol attempted to assassinate Mothma by detonating a bomb in her office. However, Mothma was absent, and her Adviser Auxi Kray Korbin was killed. Shortly thereafter, Mothma, Organa, Sondiv Sella, and Sinjir Rath Velus convened with Grand Vizier Mas Amedda to sign the Galactic Concordance, which facilitated the Empire's surrender to the New Republic. The signing ceremony occurred at the crystal cliffs situated north of Hanna City. On that same day, Organa gave birth to her son, Ben Solo. The Empire's capitulation was followed by a week–long Festival of Liberation.

By 9 ABY, Chandrila had resumed its role as the capital of the New Republic.

In Luke Skywalker's dream in 34 ABY on Ahch-To, he imagined a scenario where he had not joined the Rebel Alliance and instead remained on Tatooine and married Camie Marstrap. In this dream, the Empire used the Death Star to destroy not only Alderaan but also Mon Cala and Chandrila.

Inhabitants

Chandrilans were generally considered peaceful but also somewhat arrogant, pedantic, and deeply engaged in politics. In the aftermath of the Imperial Era, some Chandrilans harbored resentment towards former Imperials.

Behind the scenes

Within canon, Chandrila first appeared as the New Republic capital in Chuck Wendig's 2015 novel Aftermath. In Star Wars legends, Chandrila was initially mentioned in The Star Wars Sourcebook, a roleplaying supplement published in 1987.
