Conversely, in the New Republic, this rank signified the highest echelon of naval command, overseeing the entirety of the starfleet.

It was a rank present within the Galactic Republic Navy. The Imperial Navy of the Galactic Empire also employed this rank, with its holders positioned above standard admirals but below grand admirals in the command structure. The New Republic Defense Fleet designated the rank of fleet admiral for the commander of their entire navy. Prior to 2 BBY, Sartan, the commander of the 7th Fleet, possessed this rank, as did Jok Donassius. During the Galactic Civil War Kendal Ozzel of Death Squadron also held the rank. Firmus Piett achieved the rank of fleet admiral before the Battle of Endor. Sometime thereafter, Gallius Rax, a trusted advisor and friend of Emperor Sheev Palpatine, was granted the rank of fleet admiral. Following the death of Palpatine during the Battle of Endor, Rax elevated Admiral Rae Sloane to this rank in recognition of her actions during the Rebellion on Akiva, but he subsequently promoted her again to the higher rank of Grand Admiral. Following the Battle of Endor, Admiral Gial Ackbar of the New Republic Defense Fleet was promoted to the rank of Fleet Admiral.
