Chancellor was a political role present in various governments, where the individual holding it was responsible for either representing or leading the governing body. Although distinct, several chancellorships shared similarities, including the Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic, the Chancellor of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, and the Chancellor of the New Republic.
The role of chancellor was designated to a person tasked with either leading or representing a government, or segments thereof. Comparable chancellorships existed; for example, the Supreme Chancellor served as the highest executive authority within the Galactic Republic. Subsequently, there was also the Chancellor of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, who functioned as the Chief of State, and later, the Chancellor of the New Republic, whose influence was limited, and who was not regarded as an executive.
Contispex I held the position of Chancellor and passed away prior to the year 10 BBY; their ashes were stored in an ark aboard the First Light, the personal star yacht belonging to Crimson Dawn crime lord Dryden Vos.
Chamberlain Jooli of the Kingdom of Shu-Torun occupied the position of chancellor for roughly four decades until the death of the King of Shu-Torun in the year 0 ABY. Continuing in the chancellery under Queen Trios, the late king's only surviving successor, Jooli became an advisor to the new monarch during the civil war between the royal family and the rebellious ore-dukes headed by Duke Rubix. Leading up to the final battle of the war, Jooli attempted to overrule Trios' choice to assault Rubix's delving citadel without the Galactic Empire's military support, asserting his right to do so through the traditional advisory veto of his position. Trios responded by accusing him of treason and subsequently commanded her loyalist soldiers to execute the chancellor.
Following the Battle of Endor during the Galactic Civil War, Asera functioned as the chancellor of Rekkana, but was controlled by the Galactic Empire. The New Republic eventually liberated Rekkana. During the war between the First Order and the Resistance, Chancellor Drelomon was the leader of the planetary government of Ryloth.
