Karthon Chop Fields

The Karthon Chop Fields, functioning as both a junkyard and a penal colony, was utilized by the New Republic as a correctional facility. The former Galactic Empire marksman, Migs Mayfeld, received a fifty year sentence to the chop fields circa 9 ABY. Din Djarin, the Mandalorian bounty hunter, sought Mayfeld's expertise and, with the assistance of Cara Dune, the New Republic peace officer, orchestrated the ex-Imperial's release, transporting Mayfeld away from the planet aboard the Slave I, a Firespray-31-class patrol and attack craft.

Description

Located on Karthon, the Karthon Chop Fields served as a scrapyard and a place where the New Republic incarcerated inmates, compelling them to dismantle obsolete Imperial spaceships and other military hardware. A mobile loading gantry variant was employed to facilitate the movement of these materials. Inmates were provided with uniforms and implements, working amidst the piles of scrap under the watchful eyes of N5 sentry droids.

History

The second Death Star utilized materials sourced from the Karthon Chop Fields during its construction, prior to its destruction in 4 ABY. Following the Empire's collapse, the New Republic repurposed the scrap fields for penal labor. Around 9 ABY, Migs Mayfeld, a former Imperial sniper captured during the Bothan-Five Incident on the New Republic prison transport Bothan-5 near the Dilestri system, was sentenced to a fifty year term at the Karthon Chop Fields for his role in the operation and the demise of a ranking officer aboard the starship.

Din Djarin, the Mandalorian bounty hunter responsible for Mayfeld's capture by the New Republic, sought to liberate Mayfeld to gain his assistance in locating an Imperial light cruiser under the command of Moff Gideon. He journeyed to Karthon Chop Fields accompanied by Cara Dune, the New Republic peacekeeper, Boba Fett, the bounty hunter, and Fennec Shand, the hitwoman. Leveraging her authority within the New Republic, Dune directed an N5 sentry droid to escort her to Mayfeld, where she unshackled him. Subsequently, Dune escorted him back to Fett's Firespray-31-class patrol and attack craft, Slave I, and the former Imperial departed with Djarin's group.

The Karthon Chop Fields was initially referenced in "Chapter 14: The Tragedy" from The Mandalorian, a Disney+ series by Jon Favreau, directed by Robert Rodriguez and broadcast on December 4, 2020. The location made its debut appearance in the subsequent episode, "Chapter 15: The Believer," helmed by Rick Famuyiwa and released on December 11, 2020. The set's design involved a miniature model featuring 12 to 15 TIE fighter components, which was then scanned and projected within The Volume, a production facility employing wrap-around LED screens to generate CGI environments.
