Mobile loading gantry

The mobile loading gantry, also referred to as a scrap walker, was a type of crane transport walker employed by the Ferrixians on the planet Ferrix. The New Republic also utilized them at the Karthon Chop Fields on Karthon, which fell under the authority of the New Republic Correctional Corps. These mobile loading gantries could be equipped with a pair of claws, one on each side, and were suitable for use in scrapping operations.

Description

Known also as "scrap walkers," mobile loading gantries were substantial, four-legged crane walkers found on various worlds dedicated to scrapping. They possessed four prominent legs and featured two distinct cranes positioned at the front and rear of the main body. The front crane was tall, featuring a retractable hoist and a claw-like attachment at its end, while the rear crane was considerably smaller, equipped with a segmented grabber-like arm instead.

History

A mobile loading gantry operating just outside of Ferrix City

The use of mobile loading gantries dates back to the Imperial Era, when they were deployed by the Ferrixians alongside other crane transports, including the HI-CT and the OI-CT, to aid in extensive scrapping projects on Ferrix. In 9 ABY, New Republic prisoners operated a number of mobile loading gantries at the Karthon Chop Fields on Karthon. Around this same time, remnants of at least one mobile loading gantry ended up amongst the scrap piles on Lanupa, where they were integrated into the shell of the mother trash crab, Tet'niss.

Behind the scenes

The mobile loading gantry made its debut in "Chapter 15: The Believer," where its presence was confirmed in the audio description. Artists from Tippett Studio designed the vehicle, and later repurposed elements of its model as scrap decorating the trash crab Tet'niss for the 2024 series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.
