Karthon, a moon serving as a [prison](/article/prison], was situated in the Zuma sector of the Outer Rim Territories. During the Galactic Civil War, it provided materials for the Galactic Empire's superweapon, the Death Star II. Following the conflict, the victorious New Republic repurposed the Karthon Chop Fields scrapyard into a correctional facility where inmates dismantled old Imperial machinery. In 9 ABY, Migs Mayfeld, an inmate serving a fifty-year sentence at the Karthon Chop Fields for his part in the breakout of a prisoner and the death of corrections officer Lant Davan, was entrusted to Marshal Cara Dune. This transfer was to assist in the search for Moff Gideon's light cruiser.
The first mention of Karthon occurred in "Chapter 14: The Tragedy" of The Mandalorian, a Disney+ series created by Jon Favreau and directed by Robert Rodriguez, which was broadcast on December 4, 2020. Subsequently, the location made its initial appearance in "Chapter 15: The Believer," the next episode, which was directed by Rick Famuyiwa and released on December 11, 2020.
