Migs Mayfeld

A former Imperial Army sharpshooter turned mercenary, Migs Mayfeld was a human male. During the New Republic era, the criminal Ranzar Malk enlisted Mayfeld to spearhead a team with the objective of rescuing the prisoner Qin from Bothan-5, identified as a New Republic Correctional Transport. Malk, alongside Mayfeld and the team, planned to double-cross the Mandalorian Din Djarin, who was brought on board for the use of his starship, the Razor Crest.

During their operation, Mayfeld guided the team onto the prison ship, making their way to the control room where they encountered Lant Davan, a New Republic soldier manning the controls. Following Davan's death, the team reached Qin's cell, at which point they betrayed Djarin, imprisoning him in a prison cell. However, Djarin managed to escape and defeat Mayfeld and his accomplices, ultimately delivering Qin to Malk on his own. Subsequently, Mayfeld received a sentence of 50 years of labor at the Karthon Chop Fields due to his involvement in the mission. Later, Djarin sought Mayfeld's help in locating Moff Gideon's ship, leading them to an Imperial remnant refinery located on Morak. It was there that Mayfeld took the life of his former commanding officer, Valin Hess, and inflicted substantial damage on a large portion of the refinery. Consequently, he was granted freedom by Carasynthia Dune, a New Republic Marshal.

Story

Imperial Sharpshooter

Mayfeld's background includes service as a sharpshooter within the ranks of the Imperial Army. During his time in the Empire, Mayfeld was under the command of Imperial officer Valin Hess, functioning as a field operative. Mayfeld was present on Burnin Konn during Operation: Cinder. The entire division he was part of, numbering between five and ten thousand individuals, perished as a consequence of the Operation. Despite the division's posthumous recognition as heroes, Mayfeld questioned the value of such recognition to those who died and their families.

Mercenary Work

Mayfeld introduced Djarin to his team

After leaving the Empire, Mayfeld transitioned into a career as a mercenary working for the criminal Ranzar Malk. During this period, he also became a wanted criminal by the New Republic. Around 9 ABY, Malk chose Mayfeld to lead a team with the mission of extracting the Twi'lek criminal Qin from the New Republic Correctional Transport Bothan-5, which was situated near the Dilestri system. His team included the Devaronian Burg, the droid Q9-0 "Zero," and Xi'an, Qin's sister. While at the Roost space station, Malk introduced Din Djarin, a Mandalorian, as a new addition to the team. Mayfeld was also made aware of Malk's previous dealings with the Mandalorian.

While walking through the station's hangar, Mayfeld noticed Djarin's personal ship, the Razor Crest, which was intended for transporting the team to Qin's location. He commented that the Crest resembled a "Canto Bight slot machine," before introducing Djarin to the rest of the team, briefing them on their mission, and boarding the Crest.

The Assignment

As Zero piloted the Crest through hyperspace, Mayfeld and the rest of the team took their places in the ship's cargo area. He intervened in a dispute between Burg and Djarin and learned more about Djarin's background from Xi'an. Mayfeld then started teasing Djarin for his refusal to remove his helmet. A scuffle ensued between Djarin and Burg after the Devaronian tried to remove his helmet. Burg accidentally opened a compartment after being knocked back, revealing a child named Grogu inside.

Mayfeld and his team infiltrate Bothan-Five

Surprised by Grogu's presence, Mayfeld began asking numerous questions about him and even held him. Zero suddenly pulled the Crest out of hyperspace, causing Mayfeld to lose his balance and drop Grogu. After the Crest docked with the New Republic prison ship, the team entered Bothan-Five to find Qin. Mayfeld guided the team through the ship's corridors, eventually encountering an MSE-6 series repair droid. Despite Mayfeld's objections, Burg shot the droid, alerting a group of N5 sentry droids to their presence.

Although the team was initially pinned down, they continued their mission after Djarin destroyed the droids, with Mayfeld mocking the Mandalorian's efforts. The team entered the control room, where they found a soldier named Lant Davan at the controls. During the standoff, Mayfeld examined the ship's controls and discovered the location of Qin's prison cell, before Davan revealed a homing beacon. Tensions escalated between Djarin and the team regarding whether to kill Davan. The standoff ended when Xi'an killed the soldier, but not before he activated the beacon and alerted a New Republic attack team.

Betrayal of the Mandalorian

Faced with a limited time frame, the team hurried towards Qin's cell. After freeing Qin, Mayfeld and the team proceeded to trap Djarin inside the cell, leaving him behind. Djarin later escaped the cell by commandeering a security droid. As the team made their way back to the Razor Crest, Zero informed Mayfeld that Djarin had escaped, and the Mandalorian began sealing off sections of the ship through the control room. Mayfeld and Qin were separated from Burg and Xi'an when a door closed between them. After Xi'an and Burg left to hunt for Djarin, Qin offered Mayfeld triple the amount promised by Malk to eliminate Djarin and complete the mission, urging him to abandon Burg and his sister.

Mayfeld moments before defeat

While searching for the Mandalorian, Mayfeld eliminated several security droids. At an intersection, Mayfeld was startled by a mouse droid. Unbeknownst to Mayfeld, Djarin, having already defeated Burg and Xi'an, approached him from behind and subdued him. Mayfeld was then imprisoned in one of the ship's cells alongside Xi'an and Burg. Djarin then proceeded to capture Qin himself and destroyed Zero in the process, resulting in an arrest warrant from the New Republic.

Unbeknownst to Mayfeld and the team, their actions aboard Bothan-Five were recorded in the ship's security logs. When Carson Teva, a New Republic pilot, later confronted Djarin about his actions on the prison ship, the captain mentioned the wanted statuses of Mayfeld, Xi'an, and Burg, allowing the Mandalorian to remain free for attempting to protect Davan and subsequently capturing the three mercenaries.

Enlistment

Following his capture, Mayfeld's information was entered into a New Republic prison database, resulting in a sentence of 50 years of service at the Karthon Chop Fields for his role in freeing Qin and murdering Davan. There, he was identified as "Inmate 34667" and tasked with dismantling old Imperial technology. Djarin later inquired about Mayfeld's location through Cara Dune, the New Republic [marshal](/article/marshal]. After briefly reviewing Mayfeld's arrest record, Dune asked about the reason for his interest, to which Djarin revealed his intention to break Mayfeld out of prison to track down Moff Gideon's light cruiser.

Djarin, Dune, and their allies traveled to the Karthon Chop Fields to retrieve Mayfeld. Dune had a security droid approach the mercenary, interrupting his work on a TIE fighter wreckage and instructing him to come down and receive new instructions. The droid then ordered him to salute Dune as she arrived to take the mercenary away, Mayfeld's ankle security brace deactivating simultaneously.

Confused as to where he was being taken, Mayfeld was made to follow the marshal to the Firespray-31-class patrol and attack craft Slave I while questioned what was happening. The Mandalorian Boba Fett and assassin Fennec Shand exited Slave I, and mercenary briefly thought that Fett had been Djarin. Djarin himself then came out of the attack craft, and the mercenary nervously greeted him. Dune revealed that they needed him as he had been affiliated with the Empire, Djarin specifying that Mayfeld's experience with Imperial clearances and protocols were of use to the group.

Operation on Morak

Mayfeld disguised as a Juggernaut Pilot

Mayfeld was taken aboard Slave I to assist Dune, along with Djarin, Boba Fett, and Fennec Shand, in locating Moff Gideon's cruiser. Needing access to an internal Imperial terminal to obtain its coordinates, he revealed the existence of a secret Imperial mining hub on the planet Morak, where a group of Imperial remnants operated. Upon arrival, Mayfeld and Djarin hijacked a HCVw A9.2 juggernaut transport known as Juggernaut Five, which was transporting rhydonium, and disguised themselves as Juggernaut Pilots. As the other juggernauts were destroyed by pirates, Djarin defended their transport while Mayfeld drove.

Upon reaching the refinery, they were hailed as heroes, being the only transport to successfully deliver the rhydonium. Mayfeld entered the officers' mess hall to access the terminal but quickly exited, informing Djarin that he could not complete the mission because his former commanding officer, Valin Hess, was inside. After Djarin took his place at the terminal and was questioned by Hess, Mayfeld intervened to cover for him, risking recognition by Hess.

Hess invited them for a drink to celebrate their successful delivery. During their conversation, Mayfeld grew increasingly agitated by Hess's willingness to sacrifice lives, referencing Operation: Cinder and the atrocities committed on Burnin Konn. When Hess made a toast to the Empire, Mayfeld shot him, against Djarin's wishes. Djarin and Mayfeld escaped to the roof, where Fett picked them up in Slave I. As they flew away, Mayfeld asked Djarin for a cycler rifle. Mayfeld then used it to ignite the rhydonium on the juggernaut they had commandeered earlier, destroying the juggernaut and causing significant damage to the refinery, telling Djarin that it would help him sleep at night. Once they were in the clear, they rendezvoused with Dune and Shand. Mayfeld prepared to be taken back to the shipyards as a prisoner, but Dune commented on the unfortunate "death" of Mayfeld in the refinery explosion, telling him that he could walk free on Morak.

Character

Migs Mayfeld's mugshot

Migs Mayfeld, a human male, had a bald head, a red-haired beard, light skin, and blue eyes. As the quick-witted leader of Malk's crew, he took his work seriously but was also prone to condescending towards Din Djarin and joking around him, at one point suggesting that Djarin was a Gungan after the Mandalorian did not remove his helmet. Mayfeld also admitted that he did not have the temperament or patience to take care of pets when observing the infant aboard the Razor Crest. After witnessing Operation Cinder, Mayfeld became cynical of any form of galactic leadership, specifically the New Republic, feeling that no matter who was in charge, no politician ever cared for the poor and the disenfranchised. Mayfeld saw the plight of the people of Morak as an example of people being abandoned by the new "benevolent" government.

Abilities

Mayfeld targets rhydonium containers with a simple cycler rifle.

Ranzar Malk described Mayfeld as one of the "best triggermen" he'd ever seen; the mercenary eliminated three security droids in quick succession while aboard Bothan-Five. Mayfeld was proficient with a variety of weapons. He was able to use Boba Fett's cycler rifle with great accuracy to destroy rhydonium shipments on Morak while standing aboard a boarding ramp of a moving Slave I. He was crafty and a quick thinker, cleverly helping Djarin retain his disguise when his companion was questioned by Hess, saying that Djarin had damaged hearing after an incident on Taanab.

Gear

Mayfeld carried five blasters of varying types.

Mayfeld wore a dark shirt and pants along with brown gloves and boots. For weaponry, he carried five blasters, two of them were in his hip holsters, a trio of DT-12 heavy blaster pistols; two of which were in several holsters around his chest and a third in an automated weapon mounting attached to his backpack, allowing him to fire all three weapons at once.

When disguised as a Juggernaut Pilot, Mayfeld wore grey-green armor with a helmet often worn by Imperial combat assault tank pilots. He also had an SE-14r light repeating blaster.

Development

Concept art featuring Mayfeld by Brian Matyas

Migs Mayfeld's debut was in "Chapter 6: The Prisoner," the sixth episode of The Mandalorian, directed by Rick Famuyiwa and broadcast on December 13, 2019. His complete name was revealed in "Chapter 14: The Tragedy," which aired on December 4, 2020. Bill Burr portrayed the character, with Chad Bennett as his stunt double. Mayfeld was first revealed in a trailer on August 23, 2019, before the show's premiere. Nick Gindraux, Jama Jurabaev, Christian Alzmann, and Brian Matyas created concept art for the character. Gindraux's artwork showed Mayfeld with black hair and a black beard, while Jurabaev's depicted him as an alien. He was originally intended to be heavily tattooed.

Jon Favreau, the creator of The Mandalorian, offered Burr the role after meeting him at a birthday party. Favreau believed that those who listened to Burr's podcast, Monday Morning Podcast, would find it amusing to see him in a Star Wars production, given Burr's previous reputation for criticizing the franchise. He accepted the role at his wife's encouragement.
