A division of the army of the Galactic Empire, comprised of 5,000 to 10,000 soldiers, was under the command of General Valin Hess throughout the Empire's reign. After the death of Emperor Sheev Palpatine in 4 ABY, the devastating Operation: Cinder was implemented across the Empire's military. During this operation, the division led by Hess took part in an attack targeting the planet Burnin Konn. These soldiers engaged in combat within a city that had been resisting Imperial rule. However, during the conflict, Hess made the decision to obliterate the entire city, resulting in the death of almost all of his troops.
Migs Mayfeld, an Imperial sharpshooter, survived the slaughter and ultimately deserted the Empire, deeply affected by the loss of his many friends in the division. In 9 ABY, Mayfeld's path crossed with Hess once more while he was undercover at an Imperial refinery located on the planet. They spoke about the demise of their division, and the general proudly described the destruction he had caused. Still consumed by anger over the loss of his comrades, Mayfeld fatally shot Hess and escaped the refinery alongside his accomplice, Din Djarin.
The division commanded by Valin Hess was initially referenced in "Chapter 15: The Believer" from The Mandalorian, a live-action Disney+ series created by Jon Favreau, directed by Rick Famuyiwa, and released on December 11, 2020.
