Mission to Morak

During the New Republic Era in 9 ABY, a crucial operation unfolded on the planet Morak. This involved a confrontation between Din Djarin, the Mandalorian, and his assembled team—Carasynthia Dune, Migs Mayfeld, Boba Fett, and [Fennec Shand](/article/fennec_shand]—against the lingering remnants of the fallen Galactic Empire.

The Confrontation

Approaching the Terminal

Upon their arrival inside the Imperial complex, Djarin and Mayfeld received greetings from the stationed personnel and workforce, who were ignorant of the pair's true identities as infiltrators. The two proceeded toward the officer's mess hall, where Mayfeld spotted [Valin Hess](/article/valin_hess], an Imperial commander under whom he had previously served. Mayfeld worried that Hess would expose their deception. Djarin then took the code cylinder containing the data from Mayfeld. Subsequently, he used the terminal to download the data, an act that required him to remove his helmet and expose his face, a direct violation of the tenets of the Children of the Watch.

Hess noticed Djarin and attempted to determine his TK number. Mayfeld intervened, providing fabricated credentials and claiming that Djarin suffered from hearing loss due to a ship decompression incident over Taanab. After a moment of doubt, the Imperial officer invited them to his table for a celebratory drink, acknowledging that their HCVw A9.2 juggernaut transport was the only one to successfully complete its designated route.

Seated at the table, Hess proposed a toast, dismissing conventional wishes for health and prosperity before inquiring about Djarin's homeworld. Mayfeld interrupted, offering a toast to Operation: Cinder, which earned him praise from Hess for his knowledge of Imperial history. Mayfeld then clarified that he had "lived it" and participated in the destruction of Burnin Konn during the purge, asserting that as many as ten thousand Imperials, a full division, had perished. Hess brushed this aside, raising his glass to the fallen as heroes of the Galactic Empire who had sacrificed themselves for the greater good. He then claimed that the New Republic was "eating [itself] alive." Hess further asserted that the Imperial Remnant would use the rhydonium delivered by the infiltrators to sow more chaos before reclaiming power, as the galaxy craved order more than the supposed freedom offered by the New Republic. He concluded by toasting to the glory of the Empire.

Overcome with rage, Mayfeld pulled his blaster and shot Hess dead. The two infiltrators then eliminated several other officers in the mess hall before escaping through a window. As they fled, Mayfeld handed Djarin his helmet, claiming that he had not seen his face.

Boba Fett, piloting Slave I, destroys a pair of TIE fighters.

The pair made their escape through a window and onto the facility's roof, with troopers in pursuit. Dune eliminated these reinforcements, many of whom fell to their deaths in the waters below, while Shand eliminated gunners on the defensive positions. Reaching the roof, Mayfeld and Djarin dispatched several more troopers before jumping into the open hatch of Slave I and making a narrow escape. Taking up Fett's cycler rifle, Mayfeld fired a precise shot into the cargo of rhydonium, triggering a massive explosion. This explosion then ignited the rhydonium in an adjacent transport, causing secondary explosions that severely damaged the refinery.

From a nearby cliff, Shand and Dune observed as a pair of TIE fighters gave chase to Fett's ship. However, a seismic charge swiftly destroyed both fighters. All members of the team were safely evacuated and met at a designated clearing. Mayfeld glumly realized he was going to be returned to prison, but Dune declared that he had perished in the explosion and was now free.

The Consequences

Djarin issues a warning to Moff Gideon.

After securing the coordinates, Djarin and Dune released Mayfeld, implying that she would report his death in the explosion. Initially confused by this turn of events, Mayfeld quickly embraced his newfound freedom and departed into the jungles of Morak, glancing back briefly as Slave I took off.

Subsequently, Moff [Gideon](/article/gideon], aboard his light cruiser, was informed by Elia Kane that Djarin had sent a message. The message repeated Gideon's own words about the abducted [Grogu](/article/din_grogu] on Nevarro, stating that the child was more valuable than Gideon realized and that he would soon be returned to the Mandalorian's custody.
