Elia Kane

Elia Kane, identified as TK-2755 within the structure of the Galactic Empire and as Amnesty Officer G68 under the authority of the New Republic, was a human officer who initially served the Galactic Empire. She later became a member of one of its remnant factions, specifically the one commanded by Moff Gideon, functioning as both a communications officer and, covertly, as a spy. During the Imperial Era, Kane received her training at the Royal Imperial Academy located on Coruscant. Subsequent to the Empire's defeat by the New Republic, she affiliated herself with the remnant forces under Moff Gideon's leadership within the Outer Rim Territories.

By the year 9 ABY, she was in communication with an informant to locate the Force-sensitive infant Grogu. Kane relayed information to Gideon regarding the placement of a tracker on the gunship Razor Crest, the vessel housing the child. Eventually, Gideon's light cruiser successfully tracked the Razor Crest to the planet Tython, leading to the gunship's destruction. Kane informed Gideon that his dark troopers were prepared for deployment, and Gideon subsequently ordered the troopers to capture Grogu. Following this, the comms officer accompanied Gideon during a visit to the captured infant, soon thereafter receiving instructions to contact Doctor Penn Pershing. Later, the comms officer informed Gideon about a message from the Mandalorian Din Djarin, who expressed his intent to rescue Grogu from Gideon's custody. When the Lambda-class T-4a shuttle designated Shuttle 2743 emerged from hyperspace near the cruiser, Kane acknowledged the shuttle's docking request but promptly instructed the starship to maintain distance for the deployment of TIE fighters. When the shuttle failed to comply with these instructions, she commanded the TIEs to remain clear of the launch tube. Djarin, along with his allies, disembarked from the shuttle and engaged the personnel present.

Kane survived the conflict, only to be captured by the New Republic and subsequently integrated into the New Republic Amnesty Program. Despite this integration, her allegiance remained with the Empire, and she secretly maintained communication with and followed directives from her superior, Moff Gideon.

Biography

Serving Gideon

Capture of Grogu

During the Imperial Era of the Galactic Empire, Elia Kane became a part of the government and underwent training at the Imperial Academy located on the ecumenopolis world of Coruscant. The Empire then fell in 5 ABY as a result of losing a war against the emerging New Republic. However, Kane continued her service within the Empire's remaining forces, which were composed of various remnant factions. She functioned as a communications officer within the remnant led by Moff Gideon, holding the rank of lieutenant. She was stationed on Gideon's light cruiser, where she encountered the Imperial scientist Doctor Penn Pershing numerous times, although they never had the opportunity to formally introduce themselves.

In 9 ABY, Gideon was engaged in the hunt for a Force-sensitive infant named Grogu, whom the Moff referred to as "the asset." During this pursuit, Kane maintained contact with a Mimbanese informant operating on the planet Nevarro. Following the visit of the Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin, Grogu's protector, to Nevarro with the child, the informant was tasked with performing repairs on the Mandalorian's gunship, the Razor Crest. The informant then contacted Kane, confirming that Grogu remained in Djarin's care. Kane instructed the informant to install a tracking beacon. Upon the Mimbanese worker's confirmation of the installation, Kane expressed her gratitude and promised rewards in the "new era." The comms officer then proceeded to inform Gideon of the information received from the informant.

Elia Kane's post was on the bridge of Moff Gideon's light cruiser.

Gideon's light cruiser tracked the Razor Crest to the planet Tython, where Gideon's stormtroopers engaged in combat with Djarin and two of his allies, the assassin Fennec Shand and the Mandalorian Boba Fett. The cruiser subsequently destroyed the Razor Crest while the gunship was grounded. When Gideon inquired about the engagement of his dark troopers, Kane reported that the troopers were deploying imminently. Subsequently, four dark troopers descended to apprehend Grogu at a temple ruin. Once the infant had been secured aboard the light cruiser, the vessel jumped into hyperspace. Kane later joined Gideon as he inspected and taunted Grogu. After the Moff had the infant stunned, he instructed the comms officer to transmit an encrypted message to Doctor Pershing upon exiting hyperspace, indicating that they had acquired a donor for him. Kane acknowledged Gideon's order before they both departed the cell.

The Mandalorian strikes back

Kane was present when Din Djarin sent a message to Gideon.

At a later time, Kane, accompanied by an Imperial gunnery officer, informed Gideon of a holographic message from the Mandalorian. The message consisted of a recording by Djarin, asserting that Gideon had underestimated Grogu's value and that the infant would soon be returned to the Mandalorian's custody. Kane and the gunnery officer stood by the table displaying the message as Gideon observed it himself.

Shortly thereafter, Kane was at her terminal when the Lambda-class T-4a shuttle designated Shuttle 2743 arrived from hyperspace near Gideon's cruiser, pursued by the Firespray-31-class patrol and attack craft Slave I. The comms officer detected the starships on her scanners and overheard Bo-Katan Kryze's request for emergency docking. Kane acknowledged the request, under the impression that Kryze was an Imperial pilot, and Gideon ordered the launch of TIE fighters. The comms officer advised Shuttle 2743 to maintain distance from the cruiser's launch tube, where the TIEs were being deployed. As TIE fighters were deployed to engage the Slave I, the shuttle failed to alter its course away from the launch tube, prompting Kane to insist that the vessel must remain clear until the fighters had been deployed.

Kane commanded Shuttle 2743 to stand down.

The pilot disregarded Kane's order, emphasizing that Shuttle 2743 was under attack, leading the comms officer to issue orders via comm to immediately clear the launch tube. Shortly thereafter, the hangar ceased deploying TIEs to permit the shuttle to land, while the Slave I broke off its pursuit and escaped. In reality, the shuttle carried Djarin and his allies, who eliminated personnel within the hangar. While Kane consulted her console, Gideon ordered the activation of the dark troopers and departed the bridge. Djarin's associates soon reached the bridge, eliminating the defending stormtroopers and officers.

Integrated into the Amnesty Program

Impromptu reunion

Kane survived the assault by Djarin and his allies, who ultimately seized control of Gideon's cruiser and surrendered the Moff to the New Republic. The comms officer also fell into the New Republic's custody, which processed her through their Re-Integration Institute. Kane then entered the New Republic Amnesty Program, receiving the designation "Amnesty Officer G68," and took up residence in an apartment within Amnesty Housing. However, Kane secretly remained loyal to the Imperial cause and in service of Gideon. At some point, she began secretly leaving the residence and the designated boundaries, visiting a Shipyard Depot where decommissioned Imperial Star Destroyers were stored. One day, Doctor Pershing, who had also been captured by the New Republic, was transferred from the Re-Integration Institute to the Amnesty Program. As part of this transfer, he delivered a presentation at the Galaxies Opera House, discussing his work on cloning before an audience of aristocrats. Kane herself was among the audience members during the presentation.

Later, Kane sat at a table in the courtyard of Amnesty Housing, sharing drinks with amnesty officers G27, M34, and M40. While they socialized, Pershing returned to the residence from the opera house. M34 greeted the doctor and welcomed him to Amnesty Housing, introducing himself as well as Kane and the other two officers. Kane and Pershing recognized each other, with the latter remarking that he had not anticipated encountering anyone from Gideon's cruiser. M34 was unaware that "G68" had worked for Gideon, and G27 and M40 shared rumors they had heard about the Moff's fate. Kane claimed that she tried to avoid thinking about her former superior and praised the New Republic's rehabilitation program and the opportunities it provided. Consequently, M34 proposed a toast to the New Republic.

Pershing joined the other amnesty officers at the table, and Kane inquired whether the doctor had taken in the sights of Coruscant. She offered to show him around when he had the time. G27 asked Pershing what he missed from his days in the Empire, and the scientist mentioned the yellow travel biscuits from the Imperial ration packs. Kane confirmed M34's statement that those were not available in the Core Worlds, adding that she preferred the red biscuits. M40 jokingly criticized her taste in food, and the group continued to banter about it. That night, Kane obtained a box of yellow travel biscuits from the destroyers in the Shipyard Depot and anonymously delivered them to Pershing's apartment.

The set up

Kane's betrayal of Pershing led to his arrest by the New Republic.

Later, Kane and Pershing visited Coruscant's Monument Plaza, where various holograms and pavilions were in operation. The pair acquired glowing treats and strolled through the plaza.

As Pershing grew frustrated with the Republic's restrictions on his genetic research, Kane directed Pershing to a decommissioned Imperial Star Destroyer docked on Coruscant's surface, where he could retrieve a mobile lab to discreetly conduct his research. There, she identified herself by her full name, Elia Kane. As they exited the ship, they were apprehended by Republic security. Kane turned on Pershing and delivered him to the Republic for reconditioning using a Six-O-Two Mitigator, a type of Mind Flayer that they claimed had been repurposed to break Imperial indoctrination. As the procedure commenced, she requested to remain in the observation room, referring to Pershing as a friend. Once she was alone, she significantly increased the intensity of the mind flayer, erasing Pershing's memories to safeguard Gideon's cloning experiments from being exposed to the New Republic.

Internal conflict

Kane successfully influenced Colonel Tuttle's decision to deny reinforcements to Nevarro.

When Captain Carson Teva received a message from High Magistrate Greef Karga regarding Pirate King Gorian Shard's attack on Nevarro, he went to the New Republic's offices on Coruscant and approached the office of Colonel Tuttle. Kane entered to inquire whether the colonel required anything from the commissary. Tuttle chose to ask Kane about Nevarro, and Teva noticed the pin on her uniform, which identified her as a participant in the Amnesty Program, composed of former Imperials who had been captured and subjected to a reintegration program.

Kane highlighted Nevarro's status as an independent planet. Despite Teva's argument that they could not leave the planet defenseless, Tuttle countered that the backlog of requests from New Republic member-worlds took precedence, questioning whether intervening against pirates on an independent planet warranted the allocation of their limited resources. However, the captain raised reports of Imperial activity linked to Moff Gideon—a warlord who had been captured by Din Djarin and his allies and subsequently handed over to the New Republic—suggesting a potential connection to the pirate invasion. Tuttle dismissed Teva's claim as a "leap," but the pilot pointed out that Gideon had never made it to his trial at the New Republic Tribunal.

As Tuttle attempted to dismiss his claims, Teva requested authorization and backup to address the pirates on Nevarro. Kane then interjected, suggesting that Nevarro's leaders needed to understand the value of joining the New Republic. Teva characterized this as suffering and labeled it an Imperial mindset, but the amnesty officer argued that Nevarro required a "new perspective" to see the light. The captain retorted that her kind did not see the light, noting that she had been captured, though the ex-Imperial described it as liberation. After Tuttle concluded that they would assess whether they could allocate any additional assets to Teva's matter, the captain warned him that something dangerous was unfolding and that they needed to act, before turning to Kane and departing the office, seeking assistance from Din Djarin and his Mandalorian tribe.

Informing Gideon of Nevarro

Kane contacted Gideon to update him on the situation in Nevarro.

Some time after Nevarro's liberation, Kane visited a secluded alley in a bustling entertainment district on Coruscant. There, she met with a Viper probe droid dispatched by Moff Gideon, which she activated via voice command to relay a message to him. After informing Gideon of the pirate siege on Nevarro and the Mandalorians' successful repelling of the invaders, a tip which frustrated the Moff as a united Mandalorian resistance would be a threat to his base on Mandalore, Kane quickly departed the scene.

Personality and traits

Kane displayed confidence in her negotiations with informants.

As a human, Elia Kane possessed an athletic physique, light skin, black hair, and brown eyes. She typically communicated with Gideon and her associates using a neutral expression and tone. When interacting with a Mimbanese informant, the comms officer maintained a hushed and urgent voice, promising the informant rewards in the "new era." When Shuttle 2743 failed to maintain distance from the cruiser's launch tube, Kane insistently ordered the shuttle to stay clear, raising her voice as she did so, but relented when the pilot failed to comply.

Equipment

Kane wore the standard uniform of an Imperial naval officer, including an Imperial kepi and two code cylinders attached below each shoulder. She displayed a rank insignia plaque on her left breast featuring two red bars above two blue bars, signifying the rank of lieutenant. The officer was also armed with a SE-14r light repeating blaster, which she carried on her right hip. Following her integration into the New Republic Amnesty Program, she began wearing an Amnesty uniform.

Behind the scenes

Milestones and conception

Brian Matyas' concept art for the "Comms Officer."

Elia Kane made her debut in "Chapter 12: The Siege," the fourth episode of Jon Favreau's 2019 Disney+ television series The Mandalorian, directed by Carl Weathers and released on November 20, 2020. Credited as "Comms Officer," she was portrayed by Katy O'Brian. Her full name and title of Amnesty Officer G68 were revealed when O'Brian reprised the role in "Chapter 19: The Convert," the third episode of The Mandalorian's third season, which was directed by Lee Isaac Chung and released on March 15, 2023.

In concept art for the officer, artist Brian Matyas primarily designed the character with subtle alterations to the Imperial officer's uniform. In one design, he experimented with a red palette for the Imperial officer's uniform, unsure if it was a new concept. In another, the artist provided her with a hat that combined elements from the hats worn by officers of the Galactic Empire and the First Order, as well as hats from Soviet-era Russia.

Casting and production

According to O'Brian, she auditioned without any knowledge of the role's specifics, with fake scripts being used for the audition itself due to the production's high level of secrecy. She was cast for the role, without being called back for another audition, approximately a year before the release of "Chapter 12: The Siege," and her scenes were filmed in the US state of Georgia between December 2019 and February 2020, with her final shoot being among the last scenes filmed. O'Brian stated that she received her lines the night before as a precaution against leaks, and her Imperial uniform was one of the original costumes used during the filming of the Star Wars original trilogy.

O'Brian added that while the name of Grogu, which had not yet been made public, was in her script, she would mentally refer to "Baby Yoda" with different names, such as "Crouton," as Grogu did not immediately resonate with her. She found the Mandalorian set to be easier to work on, as it was a closed set with minimal external noise. Producer Dave Filoni provided the actor with context for her role as a lieutenant and the props she was given. O'Brian imagined her prop code cylinders as two lightsaber daggers.

Katy O'Brian and Giancarlo Esposito on set, portraying the "Comms Officer" and Moff Gideon, respectively.

The crew also provided O'Brian with a thick gameboy-like prop, which was a communicator prop from the original trilogy, to serve as the device she used to communicate with the Mimbanese informant. However, the console was ultimately used instead, as director Weathers felt the prop was too large. During the filming of that scene, the actor spoke to a cardboard cutout of Din Djarin, with the hologram's light being generated by a lightbox, which O'Brian found very bright when the cutout was removed.

She also collaborated closely with Giancarlo Esposito, the actor portraying Moff Gideon, even meeting his children when they visited one day. O'Brian also managed to meet the puppet and robotic models used for Grogu. Upon the release of "Chapter 12: The Siege," O'Brian received widespread support from her fans and the LGBT community, of which she is a member. According to O'Brian on Twitter, during the filming of The Mandalorian, she would enter her scenes humming "The Imperial March" in her head, matching its tempo.

After her return in The Mandalorian Season 3, O'Brian stated that she had been surprised by her return, as she had believed her character had died after the Season 2 finale.
