Devices known as Mind Flayers were originally implemented by the Galactic Empire, and were later adopted and modified for use by the New Republic.
Some years following the defeat of the Galactic Empire, Cara Dune, a former Rebel Alliance shock trooper, found herself trapped in a cantina on the planet Nevarro by the forces of former Imperial Moff Gideon. She expressed her belief that surrendering would result in her being uploaded to a Mind Flayer. Greef Karga, an agent affiliated with the Bounty Hunters' Guild, disputed the existence of Mind Flayers, dismissing them as wartime propaganda. Nevertheless, Dune was unwilling to risk the possibility of his assessment being incorrect.
Despite the prohibition of torture as outlined in the Galactic Concordance, the New Republic employed a specific type of Mind Flayer known as the Six-O-Two Mitigator. Doctor Penn Pershing was subjected to a mental recalibration process. This experimental procedure used lower voltages and was intended to alleviate traumatic memories, aiding individuals in overcoming Imperial indoctrination. However, Elia Kane intentionally sabotaged this procedure by elevating the voltage to its maximum level, effectively erasing his memories.
