Imperial combat assault tank pilots, also referred to as GAV pilots, GAV troopers, or tank troopers, were specialized Imperial combat drivers responsible for the operation of tank vehicles. A prime example of their vehicular domain was the TX-225 GAVw "Occupier" combat assault tank. During the Imperial occupation period, the streets of Jedha were routinely patrolled by these combat assault tanks, each manned by a pair of these specialized pilots. Positioned in the command seat of these vehicles, the Imperial combat assault tank commanders issued directives to the combat drivers under their command. Furthermore, these troopers saw deployment as light infantry, receiving training in reconnaissance, skirmishing, and providing escorts for combat vehicles.

GAV pilots donned armor constructed from plastoid material, presented in a white hue. This armor was a variant derived from that of the coastal defender stormtroopers, incorporating chest armor, pauldrons, vambraces, rerembraces, and greaves worn over a light gray body glove. Distinctively, they utilized a helmet design that was also used by the drivers within the ground transport pilot corps, along with a utility belt equipped with numerous pockets.
The concept and design of Imperial combat assault tank pilots originated for the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, released in 2016. Their initial unveiling occurred via the teaser trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, on April 7, 2016.
During the production phase, the actors portraying these pilots were initially outfitted with standard stormtrooper armor. This costume was later modified based on a suggestion made by George Lucas.
