Devaronian

The Devaronians originated on the planet of Devaron, and are a sentient species. A significant difference in appearance exists between males and females; males usually lack hair and possess horns, while females generally have a full head of hair and lack horns. Cikatro Vizago, a Devaronian male who was a crime lord situated on Lothal and led the Broken Horn Syndicate, serves as an example of this species.

Biological Traits and Physical Attributes

Many female Devaronians, like Tress Hacnua, had vestigial horns only.

As a species of sentient humanoids native to the planet Devaron, Devaronians possess a typical humanoid structure: two legs, a torso, a single head, and two arms ending in hands with fingers and an opposable thumb. Their heads feature a nose, a mouth with sharp teeth, and two forward-facing eyes that come in a range of colors, including black, blue, brown, dark brown, green, pink, red, and yellow. On either side of their faces are pointed ears that protrude slightly.

The species is sexually dimorphic, with distinct differences between males and females. Many males are characterized by short horns atop their heads, while most females have minimal or no horns, often displaying only small bumps, along with a full head of hair. However, some females, such as the crime lord Isa Durand, have been observed to possess full sets of horns. Certain female Devaronians also have a light covering of gray fur on their bodies. Male Devaronians are generally bald, though some may have sideburns or beards.

Devaronians have black blood due to their unique silver-based physiology, specifically their specialized blood filtration system. With two livers, their bodies efficiently eliminate toxins and carcinogens, granting them a high resistance to poison and allowing them to consume foods that would be toxic to other species. Sulfur is used as a stimulant on Devaron to enhance speed and strength, due to its rapid absorption into the bloodstream via inhalation. However, their livers struggle to process sulfur efficiently, making long-term use potentially hazardous. Furthermore, their skin is resistant to fire and extremely high temperatures.

Social Structures and Cultural Norms

On their homeworld, Devaronians operate under a matriarchal system of government. While males are not explicitly barred from holding positions of authority, few express interest in doing so. This biological dimorphism extends into their culture, with females generally exhibiting a more grounded and serious disposition, while males are characterized by a strong desire to explore the galaxy. Despite their wanderlust, Devaronian males are known for their strong dedication to their families, often sending earnings back home to provide support.

Force-sensitivity is more prevalent among Devaronians compared to other species. Nevertheless, no significant Force-based traditions developed on Devaron or within their colonies. To train Forceful children, the Jedi Order established the Temple of Eedit on Devaron, with females comprising the majority of students due to males' greater inclination to travel, a lifestyle less compatible with Jedi culture.

Presence of Devaronians in the Galaxy

Having independently developed hyperdrive technology, Devaronians engaged in exploration and interaction throughout the galaxy long before the Galactic Republic established contact with their region of space. Consequently, Devaronians were commonly encountered across the galaxy for tens of millennia prior to the [Clone Wars](/article/clone_wars].

In recent decades, Devaronians have become increasingly visible in the less civilized areas of the Outer Rim, partly due to the Galactic Empire's distrust of all aliens. During the reign of the Empire, Cikatro Vizago, a Devaronian, led the Broken Horn Syndicate, a criminal organization operating from Lothal. The crew of the starship Ghost occasionally relied on Vizago for resources and intelligence. [Roland Durand](/article/roland_durand], another Devaronian male criminal, forcibly seized control of Ciddarin Scaleback's Parlor on Ord Mantell. Another Devaronian, Yelkin, worked as a miner in the thorilide mines of Cynda. Shortly before the Battle of Yavin, Kardue'sai'Malloc, a red-skinned male Devaronian, was present in the cantina of Mos Eisley on the day that Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker first met Han Solo and Chewbacca. During 3 ABY, Torro Sbazzle, a female Devaronian, served as the Executive Chef of Cloud City. During the [New Republic Era](/article/new_republic_era], a Devaronian named Burg worked as a mercenary.

Behind-the-Scenes Information

The distinctive devil-faced Devaronians made their debut in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, with one appearing in Chalmun's Cantina. This Devaronian patron, whose mask was designed by Rick Baker, was added during the reshoots intended to populate the cantina booths with more diverse alien species.

According to the 2014 reference book Star Wars Rebels: The Visual Guide, authored by Adam Bray, male Devaronians possess horns while females do not. However, the 2015 mobile game Star Wars: Uprising depicted female Devaronians with horns. The female Devaronian Isa Durand was shown with horns in "Paths Unknown," the second episode of third season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, which premiered on February 21, 2024. This article operates under the assumption that the previously established rule that only male Devaronians have horns, as stated in Star Wars Rebels: The Visual Guide, has since been retconned.
