Gutkurrs represented a dangerous species of insect-like, flesh-eating carnivores that originated on the planet of Ryloth. On their home world, they established and defended their hunting territories. The term "Gutkurr" can also be employed as a derogatory insult by the inhabitants of Ryloth.
The Gutkurrs were a species of sizable, meat-eating carnivorous insects that were indigenous to the planet Ryloth. Their height significantly exceeded that of a typical humanoid, and they possessed razor-sharp, curved claws alongside pointed teeth designed for capturing their prey. While their arms were short and slender, their legs were long and exceptionally powerful, granting them considerable speed. Their dietary intake could consist of Twi'leks and can-cells. Gutkurrs had red eyes and were covered in spiky, armored shells that offered resistance against blaster fire. They were known as the second most dangerous predator on Ryloth, with lyleks holding the top spot.
Gutkurrs made their homes in Ryloth's equatorial forests, sharing the environment with lyleks. They also existed on the planet Onderon.

During the Separatist's control of Ryloth, TX-20 commanded his troops to seize several gutkurrs and confine them in cages located near his proton cannon emplacement in Nabat. He instructed his sergeant to keep the gutkurrs deprived of food, intending to deploy them against the Republic forces. To ascertain that the gutkurrs would exclusively target organic beings, TX-20 unlocked the cage of one gutkurr, permitting it to attack his droid sergeant. The creature quickly rejected the droid.
When the Republic deployed General Obi-Wan Kenobi's Ghost Company to secure Nabat in preparation for their landing, TX-20's sergeant then unleashed the gutkurrs. Several gutkurrs also launched an assault on troopers Boil and Waxer, as well as the Twi'lek Numa, at her home before the three made their escape through a hidden route. Shortly thereafter, the creatures discovered the main group and attacked, killed several of Kenobi's clone troopers. However, Kenobi managed to divert a number of them away from his troopers using the Force, and then ordered his troopers to detonate a significant quantity of rocks, trapping them.
