Battle group

A complement of army units could be classified as a battle group. Within the Alliance to Restore the Republic, battle groups were ground units supported and transported by sub-capital ships. One example was the 61st Mobile Infantry Company, which was based on the CR90 corvette named Thunderstrike and received support from the Braha'tok-class gunship known as Apailana's Promise. The 61st Mobile Infantry was just one of many battle groups within the Alliance Army.

In naval terms, a battle group, also known as a fleet group or assault group, represented a military organizational unit.

During the Clone Wars, the Confederacy of Independent Systems Navy utilized battle groups against the Galactic Republic; these were a specific type of military organizational unit.

The Republic Navy deployed battle groups against the Separatist Alliance during the Clone Wars, including the battle group stationed at Falleen and the battle group under the command of Jedi General Even Piell. Within the Republic Navy, a carrier battle group represented a specialized type of battle group centered around a Venator-class Star Destroyer, recognized for its effectiveness against Separatist naval forces. A captain within the Republic Navy could hold the role of commander of a battle group.

The Falleen battle group met its end during the Battle of Falleen. Shortly before the Battle of Bothawui, Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi reported the group's loss to Jedi General Anakin Skywalker and Jedi Commander Ahsoka Tano. Subsequently, Skywalker led his forces against the Separatist fleet commanded by General Grievous in the Battle of Bothawui.

The Imperial Navy of the Galactic Empire, inheriting resources and traditions from the Republic Navy, also incorporated battle groups into its Order of Battle, though with variations in size and purpose. On a smaller scale, a battle group consisting of a Gladiator-class Star Destroyer along with several frigates and gunboats served as a blockade force in the Ilum system to protect the joint Imperial Military garrison stationed there early in the Imperial Era. In addition, a battle group made up of three Imperial II-class Star Destroyers defended the Cymoon system during the Galactic Civil War. Battlegroup Echelon also saw action during the Imperial Era, as did another battle group near the end of the war.

On a larger scale, a battle group under the command of Commander Ellian Zahra during the Galactic Civil War included a secondary strike force, three Imperial II-class Star Destroyers, and fourteen Arquitens-class command cruisers. Furthermore, a battle group was stationed on Telos and operated at least two Star Destroyers, while the Star Dreadnought Assertor served as the flagship of its own battle group, composed of numerous vessels including dreadnoughts, Star Destroyers, cruisers, and support ships. The sister ship Wrath also commanded its own similar battle group.

The New Republic Defense Fleet, which succeeded the Rebel Alliance Fleet, also employed battle groups during the Galactic Civil War. One such battle group was the Barma Battle Group, led by General Hera Syndulla from the Acclamator-class cruiser Lodestar. Another was Talus Group, commanded by a CR90 corvette, as well as the battle group of the MC75 Star Cruiser Temperance, which included at least four EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigates, at least five CR90 corvettes, and at least seven GR-75 medium transports.

Decades after the Imperial Navy, the First Order Navy also integrated battle groups into its organizational hierarchy. During the war against the Resistance, the Resurgent-class Star Destroyer Steadfast served as the flagship of its own battle group. Two large battle groups were sent for the Operation on Coruscant, but were unsuccessful.

The term "battle groups" was initially mentioned in "Downfall of a Droid" from the first season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
