Battle of Kamino

The Battle of Kamino, alternatively referred to as the Raid on Kamino or the Attack on Kamino, occurred amidst the Clone Wars. It pitted the Jedi-commanded Grand Army of the Galactic Republic against the Droid Army representing the Confederacy of Independent systems. This conflict was a crucial offensive by the Separatists, aiming to seize control of Kamino and obliterate the cloning installations within Tipoca City—a confrontation also known as the Battle of Tipoca City, or the defense of Tipoca City. Their objective was to hinder the Republic's ability to produce additional clone troopers for its military forces. Despite being led by General Grievous and Asajj Ventress, the Separatist forces were ultimately defeated by the Republic. Nevertheless, the assault on Kamino highlighted vulnerabilities within the Republic's intelligence security, demonstrating that all planets under the Republic's banner were susceptible to enemy attacks.

Background

An earlier attempted assault on Kamino by the Confederacy of Independent Systems took place during the Clone Wars. However, this initial attempt was thwarted by the destruction of Rishi Station.

Kenobi, Skywalker, and clone reinforcements arrive on Kamino.

In the subsequent year, Jedi Generals Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi intercepted a communication. This transmission revealed Confederate General Grievous and assassin Asajj Ventress were plotting an offensive against Kamino. Consequently, Skywalker, Obi-Wan, Commander Cody, Captain Rex, along with the troopers of the 501st Legion, were dispatched to reinforce the blockade and General Shaak Ti's garrison stationed at the cloning facilities located in Tipoca City.

During this time, Ventress and her forces lay hidden in Kamino's deep oceans, aboard a Trident-class assault ship, awaiting Grievous's arrival.

The Conflict

Diversion in Space

Grievous's frigates endure extensive damage to deploy the disguised re-entry capsules.

As Grievous's fleet neared Kamino, the blockade, under the command of Admiral Wullf Yularen, stood ready to defend against the Confederate fleet. Grievous's T-series tactical droid TV-94B confirmed that all ships were in position, and the Confederate fleet initiated their attack. Skywalker and Broadside then spearheaded the fighter squadrons against the incoming fleet. Grievous strategically sacrificed his larger transports to safeguard his [command ship](/article/command_ship]. This strategy had a hidden purpose: the wreckage from the destroyed ships descended into Kamino's orbit and oceans. This debris concealed assault craft intended for the city's attack. Upon the debris's entry into the ocean, Ventress commanded her aqua droids to assemble these assault crafts.

However, General Kenobi suspected the debris served a dual purpose. Consequently, Kenobi piloted a Kamino sub into the ocean's depths to investigate. There, he discovered the aqua droids in the process of assembling the assault crafts. Kenobi faced an attack from four aqua droids, forcing him to abandon the submarine. Subsequently, Kenobi was rescued by an aiwha.

Assault on Tipoca City

Tipoca City under a full scale assault by Separatist forces.

The Trident assault ships then emerged from the ocean, launching an assault on Tipoca City. Led by Ventress, the aqua droids spearheaded the attack against the clone troopers under the command of Commander Colt and his fellow ARC trooper Havoc. General Grievous then landed with his battle droids. Following killing Colt, Ventress and Grievous discussed their strategy. Grievous planned to assault the clone barracks, while Ventress aimed to secure a sample of the clones' DNA.

The fight between Grievous and Kenobi ended on one of the platforms in Tipoca City.

During this period, troopers Fives and Echo operated as [snipers](/article/sniper]. After Havoc's death, they received grenades from 99. They later encountered a group of clone cadets and escorted them back to the barracks. Once there, they joined Captain Rex and Commander Cody, preparing to confront Grievous's forces. As battle droids approached the barracks' entrance, Cody, Rex, and the others launched an attack. Grievous then faced Kenobi in a duel, which led them to a platform where a Trident assault ship destroyed it. Grievous presumed Kenobi had perished, but he was once again saved by an aiwha.

Ventress then infiltrated the DNA room and obtained a DNA sample, only to be confronted by Skywalker. Their ensuing battle ended with Ventress losing the sample and being surrounded by clone troopers. As Skywalker prepared to have his troopers execute Ventress, Grievous arrived in a flight pod, allowing Ventress to board and retreat.

Meanwhile, Rex, Cody, their troops, and the clone cadets successfully destroyed the battle droids, although 99 was killed in the process. Several ARF troopers then destroyed the last Trident assault ship.

Consequences

Captain Rex and Commander Cody revealed Fives and Echo's promotion to be ARC troopers.

In recognition of their actions during the battle, Echo and Fives were promoted to ARC troopers. Republic officer Wilhuff Tarkin received accolades at the battle.

Despite the Republic's victory, Kamino's facilities sustained significant damage from the intense fighting, although they remained operational. Grievous's attack also highlighted the vulnerability of all Republic planets to Separatist assaults, revealing intelligence leaks within the Republic. The attack served as a morale boost for the Confederacy.
