Yoda kept a second lightsaber on Dagobah inside his hut in 3 ABY after his previous one was lost during a duel in the Galactic Senate against Darth Sidious and then incinerated during a celebration of the Jedi Order's eradication in 19 BBY.
Luke Skywalker eventually had the lightsaber in his possession after Yoda's death in 4 ABY. Five years later, he offered the weapon to Grogu in a choice against obtaining beskar armor. However, Grogu chose the beskar armor over the lightsaber and went back to Din Djarin.
The lightsaber was a single-bladed shoto consisting of a short blade length, a straight and cylindrical hilt shape, an emitter shroud, and was powered by a green kyber crystal.
The Jedi Grand Master Yoda had at least two lightsabers. In 3 ABY, Yoda stored one of his lightsabers in a box alongside keepsakes and ancient texts in his hut on the Outer Rim planet Dagobah after the specific lightsaber he had treasured was lost during a duel in the Galactic Senate against the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Sidious. Sidious wanted to keep Yoda's initial lightsaber as a trophy in the Imperial Palace, however, it was incinerated during a celebration of the Jedi Order's eradication on the Imperial capital, Coruscant, by Grand Vizier Mas Amedda in 19 BBY. Yoda in his self-imposed exile, decided not to wield a lightsaber anymore.
After Yoda's death in 4 ABY, the lightsaber with its accompanying storage box ended up in the possession of Yoda's last Jedi apprentice, Luke Skywalker. In 9 ABY, Skywalker offered the saber to Grogu—a young member of Yoda's species—who was being trained by Skywalker at his Jedi academy on the Outer Rim planet Ossus. Grogu had to make a choice, choose the lightsaber and continue on the Jedi path or choose the beskar armor made for him at the request of his Mandalorian mentor Din Djarin and surrender to the bond he had with him, renouncing the Jedi. Grogu turned down the lightsaber and was sent back to Djarin with the armor by Skywalker.
Yoda's second lightsaber was first mentioned retroactively in the 2016 Star Wars: Complete Locations reference book. It was co-authored by Simon Beecroft, Kerrie Dougherty, Jason Fry, James Luceno, and Kristin Lund. The lightsaber made its first appearance in The Book of Boba Fett television series episode "Chapter 6: From the Desert Comes a Stranger," directed by Dave Filoni in 2022.
In the Disney Gallery: The Book of Boba Fett feature film, Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill and body double Graham Hamilton were both shown on set with the lightsaber during the production of "Chapter 6: From the Desert Comes a Stranger."
Star Wars: Complete Locations depicted Yoda's first lightsaber as being stored in a box in Yoda's Hut by the time of the events of Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. This was at the time, however, viewed as a contradiction, as the same lightsaber was destroyed in the comic Darth Vader (2017) 1. When asked about this, writer Charles Soule mused that perhaps Yoda built a new one, that he had more than one or that Darth Sidious built a fake to make a point. Lucasfilm Story Group's Matt Martin later stated that they were aware of the discrepancy, but that it was not an error as Yoda likely had more than a few lightsabers during his lifetime.
The discrepancy was seemingly solved in the 2022 comic Crimson Reign 3, which stated that one of Yoda's lightsabers was destroyed during the celebration. The short story "Masters," however, later established that Sidious wanted to collect Yoda's first lightsaber after his death and store it within the Imperial Palace as a trophy, which would suggest that Sidious did not have it destroyed as depicted in Darth Vader 1. This article therefore treats the Crimson Reign 3 explanation as correct.
