A5-RX battle tank

The A5-RX battle tank, alternatively known as the A5-Recon Juggernaut, represented a scaled-down, specialized iteration of the A5 Juggernaut, meticulously re-engineered to prioritize enhanced speed and agility on the combat zone. Notwithstanding its reduced dimensions, the A5-RX boasted formidable firepower, incorporating a dual repeating blasters pair, a rear-mounted beam laser cannon, and a dorsal spread missile turret capable of launching six missiles per volley. The tank initially saw service with the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars, and subsequently with the Galactic Empire throughout the Galactic Civil War, participating in engagements across the galaxy.

Description

An A5-RX battle tank and clone engineers of the 38th Armored Division.

The A5-RX battle tank—also designated as the A5-Recon, or A5-R, Juggernaut—was a considerably smaller modification of the original HAVw A5 Juggernaut tank. Diverging from the A5 and A6 Juggernaut models, the A5-RX employed tracks instead of wheels, which, coupled with its diminished size, facilitated superior maneuverability on the field of battle. The A5-R possessed a standard cruising speed of 13 megalights, with the capability to accelerate to 16 MGLT for brief intervals. Despite its smaller stature, the A5-RX exhibited greater armament compared to the A5 model, featuring two dual repeating blaster turrets positioned beneath the forward cockpit, which were prone to overheating under sustained use. Additionally, the A5-RX incorporated an aft beam laser cannon—also susceptible to overheating—and a sizable spread missile turret mounted on the juggernaut's dorsal surface, capable of launching six missiles per engagement, necessitating a brief interval for missile turret reloading between volleys.

The juggernaut could accommodate a crew of up to five beings, including a pilot responsible for maneuvering the A5-RX during combat. The A5-RX also provided seating for four gunners: two operating the juggernaut's forward blaster turrets, one controlling its rear beam laser, and one managing the tank's dorsal spread missile launcher. Select A5-RX models allowed the pilot to assume control of the repeating blaster turrets, enabling firing while simultaneously piloting the juggernaut.

History

An 5-RX battle platform in action

The A5-RX battle tank was initially deployed by the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars, crewed by the Galactic Republic's clone troopers. The A5-RX was engineered for reconnaissance missions on planets where obstacles frequently impeded the larger A5 Juggernauts, proving highly effective in engagements against the Separatist's OG-9 homing spider droid. Throughout the Clone Wars, the A5-RX saw action on numerous planets across the galaxy, including Geonosis, Ord Mantell, and Mustafar.

Clone engineers belonging to the 38th Armored Division modified an A5-RX tank, equipping it with spread-missile launchers, and employed it to defend the Twilight from pursuing Vulture-class starfighter craft.

Subsequently, following the Republic's transformation into the Galactic Empire, the battle tank was utilized by the Imperial Army during the Galactic Civil War against the Rebel Alliance. During its service within the Empire's military forces, the A5-RX was deployed on Dantooine.
